Kino Teases Metropolis (Giorgio Moroder Version) Blu-ray

In an exclusive announcement to Ain't It Cool News this weekend, Kino Video revealed its plans to release the Giorgio Moroder version of Fritz Lang's Metropolis on Blu-ray. Moroder's eighty-minute edit of the film sparked immediate controversy following its 1984 theatrical release because of the contemporary pop soundtrack with which Moroder scored the film. Over the years, however, this pop-infused Metropolis has become a cult favorite, and many credit it with making the film relevant again as well as bringing attention to the amount of material cut from Metropolis back in 1927 (the pursuit of such missing material eventually led to last year's The Complete Metropolis, which restored much of the cut footage).

The film's soundtrack includes the following tracks:

• "Cage of Freedom" – Performed by Jon Anderson
• "Blood from a Stone" – Performed by Cycle V
• "The Legend of Babel" – Performed by Giorgio Moroder

• "Destruction" – Performed by Loverboy
• "On Your Own" – Performed by Billy Squier
• "What's Going On" – Performed by Adam Ant

While a full list of technical and supplemental specifications for the eventual Blu-ray is yet unknown, this version of Metropolis will have a limited theatrical re-release on October 14th; the Blu-ray is expected to street in late 2011 or early 2012.
