This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Scream Factory and Shout Factory have announced their November batch of releases. They are: The Chow Yun-Fat Collection Volume One, The Family Man (2000), Women in Prison Collection (1971-1985), and The Transformers: The Movie (1986).

Ice Cream Man 4K Blu-ray

Alliance Entertainment is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Eli Roth's Ice Cream Man (2026), starring Ari Millen, Charlie Zeltzer, Shiloh O'Reilly, Sarah Abbott, and Benjamin Byron Davis. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

The Rock 30th Anniversary 4K Blu-ray

Twentieth Century Studios plans to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Michael Bay's The Rock (1996) with a new combo pack release, which is expected to arrive on the market before the end of the year.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced and detailed its upcoming combo pack edition of director Wayne Thornley's Adventures in Zambezia (2012). The movie features an all-star cast led by Abigail Breslin, Jeff Goldblum, Leonard Nimoy and Samuel L. Jackson, and will be available for purchase exclusively at Walmart on March 26th.

Roadside Attractions has released a trailer for Peter Webber's latest film, Emperor (2012), starring Tommy Lee Jones, Matthew Fox, Kaori Momoi, and Toshiyuki Nishida. Last year, the film had its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Independent distributors VCI Home Entertainment have revealed that they are planning ot bring to Blu-ray director Eugène Lourié's Gorgo (1961), starring Bill Travers, William Sylvester and Vincent Winter. The preliminary release date set by the distributors is March 19th.

Independent British distributors New Wave Films have revealed that they are planning to bring to Blu-ray Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev's (The Return, The Banishment) Elena (2011), starring Nadezhda Markina, Andrey Smirnov and Aleksey Rozin. The preliminary release date set by the distributors is February 11th.

The second season of the Starz Original series stars Golden Globe-winner Kelsey Grammer as a Chicago mayor who rules his city with an iron fist. Director Ted Kotcheff's Wake in Fright was almost lost after its box office failure in 1971. Meanwhile, Mr. Kotcheff has enjoyed a prolific career, including twelve years as executive producer of the TV series Law and Order: SVU. Now Wake in Fright is receiving belated recognition for its uncompromising depiction of masculinity run amuck. Blu-ray Sales, January 7-13: Dredd Judges the Top Spots

For the week that ended on January 13th, Lionsgate Home Entertainment scored the top Blu-ray and overall package media sales with its release of Dredd. This violent, hyper-stylized take on John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra's cult 2000 AD creation did not set the box office on fire last September - the modestly budgeted feature (it cost an estimated $50 million) only grossed over $32 million worldwide.

New York-based distributor A24 has acquired the U.S. distribution rights to Sofia Coppola's latest project, The Bling Ring (2013), starring Emma Watson, Leslie Mann and Taissa Farmiga. Currently, the film is set to be released theatrically in June.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is bringing Friends: The Complete First Season and Friends: The Complete Second Season to Blu-ray on April 30, 2013. Warner Bros. recently released a 20-disc Complete Series box set, which collected all ten seasons of the classic NBC sitcom, making these the first of what will eventually be ten individual season sets.

Criterion Announces April Titles (Pre-orders Up)

The Criterion Collection has announced five titles for Blu-ray release in April. On April 9th, the studio will release Richard III (Laurence Olivier, 1955), Gate of Hell (Teinosuke Kinugasa, 1953), and Naked Lunch (David Cronenberg, 1991). A week later, it will release Repo Man (Alex Cox, 1984). On April 23rd, it will release a collection of films by director-actor Pierre Etaix.

The British Video Association (BVA) announced today that James Cameron's Avatar has become the first film to sell more than 1 million copies on Blu-ray in the United Kingdom. In 2012, sales of Blu-ray discs rose 8.9% locally compared to 2011.
