This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Scream Factory and Shout Factory have announced their November batch of releases. They are: The Chow Yun-Fat Collection Volume One, The Family Man (2000), Women in Prison Collection (1971-1985), and The Transformers: The Movie (1986).

Ice Cream Man 4K Blu-ray

Alliance Entertainment is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Eli Roth's Ice Cream Man (2026), starring Ari Millen, Charlie Zeltzer, Shiloh O'Reilly, Sarah Abbott, and Benjamin Byron Davis. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

The Rock 30th Anniversary 4K Blu-ray

20th Century Studios is preparing a combo pack release of Peter Weir's Dead Poets Society (1989), starring Robin Williams, Robert Sean Leonard, Ethan Hawke, Josh Charles, and Gale Hansen. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on September 29.

Orphan Black: Season One Blu-ray (Updated)

BBC Home Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray release of Orphan Black: Season One. The Canadian sci-fi series is the latest inductee into BBC America's Supernatural Saturday block and stars Tatiana Maslany as the titular orphan, alongside Jordan Gavaris, Dylan Bruce, Maria Doyle Kennedy and Michael Mando. Season One streets on July 16th.

Transformers 4 to be Produced in China

Viacom Inc's Paramount Pictures announced earlier today that it has teamed up China Movie Channel, a state-run company, to produce Transformers 4 in China. The film is expected to be released in China and in the United States in June of 2014.

Australia and New Zealand distributor Hoyts Distribution announced today that it has renamed itself to StudioCanal. Hoyts Distribution is one of Australia's leading independent film distribution companies. It was acquired by StudioCanal in July 2012.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray release of Mental, a semi-autobiographical comedy from writer/director P. J. Hogan (Muriel's Wedding, Confessions of a Shopaholic) that stars Toni Collette, Liev Schreiber, Anthony LaPaglia and Rebecca Gibney. Mental comes to Blu-ray on June 4th.

Planes Sneak Peek Trailer

Walt Disney Pictures has released a new "Sneak Peek" trailer for Planes, a Cars spin-off from producer John Lasseter, director Klay Hall and DisneyToon Studios. The high-flying adventure features the voice talents of Dane Cook, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and John Cleese, and is set to arrive in U.S. theaters on August 9th.

For the week of April 2nd, Magnolia Pictures is bringing John Dies at the End to Blu-ray. The film is an adaptation of the cult horror novel, which - as developed by David Wong (the pseudonym of Cracked senior editor Jason Pargin) - does not immediately lend itself to big-screen treatment. However, Phantasm director Don Coscarelli has an innate knowledge of how to mine outlandish thrills from a minimum budget.

Section23 Films, Houston-based distributor of Sentai Filmworks anime, has announced the Blu-ray release of five titles: Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere: Season 2, Queen's Blade: Rebellion, Mobile Police Patlabor TV: Collection 1, Phi-Brain: Season 2, Collection 1 and Another. Section23 is releasing one title per week throughout the month of July.
