For the week that ended on May 12th, Paramount Pictures'
Jack Reacher debuted at number one on the Blu-ray-only media list. Engineered as a new action franchise for star Tom Cruise, the film received more attention as a result of its depictions of gun violence in the wake of the Sandy Hook school shooting, and that controversy limited its box-office appeal -
Jack Reacher scored only a
50% Metacritic score and
grossed only $80 million domestically (on top of a projected $60 million production budget). Still, the film managed a decent home media debut, garnering a Blu-ray market share of 49% and beating the rest of the week's new releases on the HD platform.
Coming in at number two on the Blu-ray-only media ranking was Twentieth Century Fox's
Safe Haven. This romantic thriller overcame tepid reviews (to date, it has generated a
34% Metacritic score) on the strength of its Nicholas Sparks pedigree; domestic audiences flocked to the
$28 million picture and helped it net over $71 million in box-office receipts.
Safe Haven had a Blu-ray market share of 29% and sold 90% as many HD units as
Jack Reacher. In terms of overall package media figures, the film actually occupied the top sales position - on that more comprehensive chart,
Jack Reacher sold 67% as many total units as the Nicholas Sparks romance.
Finally, Universal Studios'
Mama premiered at number three on the Blu-ray-only media list. This horror fantasy - the brainchild of the Muschietti siblings and Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro - made the studio a healthy profit when it ran in theaters last January;
it grossed over $142 million worldwide on top of its modest $15 million production budget. Last week,
Mama drew a Blu-ray market share of 37% and sold 39% as many Blu-rays as
Jack Reacher. On the overall home media chart, the film took fourth place (the Oscar-winning dramedy
Silver Linings Playbook was in third) and moved 34% as many total units as the Tom Cruise actioner.
