Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Scream Factory and Shout Factory have announced their November batch of releases. They are: The Chow Yun-Fat Collection Volume One, The Family Man (2000), Women in Prison Collection (1971-1985), and The Transformers: The Movie (1986).

Samsung to Discontinue BD-UP5000 in May

Samsung will discontinue production of the BD-UP5000 Blu-ray and HD DVD dual format player in May, only months after it was initially released. After experiencing months of delays, the player was released with multiple disc compatibility issues. Owners continue to experience these problem, which some suggest includes all Fox titles that make use of BD+, and has yet to deliver on its high performance promises.

Hitman Gets Unrated Blu-ray Release

Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Hitman' to Blu-ray on March 11th in its unrated form. The disc will feature a massive amount of extras, including deleted scenes, alternate ending, four featurettes, and a gag real. Also included with be a standard definition digital copy (presumably on a separate DVD) enabling you to put watch a digital copy of the film on your portable devise.

Blu-ray Hardware Sales Pick Up After Warner Announcement

A new NPD Group report shows that stand-alone Blu-ray player sales benefited greatly from the recent announcement that Warner would be going Blu-ray exclusive. The first week of January, before Warner made their announcement, there was a nearly 50-50 split between Blu-ray and HD DVD standalone players. The following week, after the announcement, Blu-ray players grabbed 93% of the market.

Hitachi to Release New Blu-ray Camcorder

After some not-so-wonderful reviews of their first Blu-ray camcorder, Hitachi is going to give it another go with the release of the DZ-BD9H hybrid Blu-ray camcorder. This improved model has a new 5.3 megapixel CMOS sensor, Picture Master Full HD processing, and brighter 2.7-inch LCD viewer. It will be released in Japan on February 12th for 180,000 yen (about $1,700).

Retailers Emphasizing Blu-ray

In the wake of the Warner announcements, major retailers are shifting focus to the Blu-ray format in hopes of accelerating the end of the format war. Trans World Entertainment, Newbury Comics, Video Buyers Group members and Hastings Entertainment are all beginning to emphasize Blu-ray as the next generation high definition format in hopes to spur growth in the relatively small market.

Blu-ray Holds 90% of HD Recorder Market in Japan

A major study of 2,300 electronic stores in Japan shows that consumers are increasingly buying high definition recorders, with 90% of those sales being Blu-ray. Holding a controlling 60% of the market was Sony with their Blu-ray recorders. In second place is Panasonic with 27% of all sales, followed by Sharp with 10%.

Blu-ray.com Folding@home Team Breaks Into Top 150

The Blu-ray.com Folding@home team has become one of the top 150 teams (out of almost 100,000 teams) in the shared-computing project, less than two months after breaking into the top 200. When not using their PS3s to watch Blu-ray movies, many forum members run the Folding@home software preloaded on the machine.

Eagle Rock Plays Blu-ray Catch-up

Eagle Rock Entertainment has announced three Blu-ray releases that were previously only available on the HD DVD format. Currently scheduled to be released on February 19th are 'Deep Purple: They All Came Down to Montreux 2006', 'Santana: Hymns for Peace - Live at Montreux 2004', and 'Yes: Live at Montreux 2003'. All titles will come 1080p video accompanied by DTS-HD 5.1 and PCM 2.0 audio tracks.

Tiesto Concert Coming to Blu-ray

Tiesto's concert in Copenhage will receive Blu-ray treatment when it gets released for home video in early March, day-and-date with the DVD release. The release, titled 'Tiesto: Elements of Life' will feature "full DTS" (which most likely means standard DTS at 1.5Mbps) and "surprising extras". No other details were mentioned, but more information is promised soon.

August Rush Announced for Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring 'August Rush' to Blu-ray on March 11th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented in 2.4:1 1080p video with Dolby TrueHD audio. Extras are limited, with only a group of alternate scenes.

Apple: Blu-ray Won the Format War

Jim Goldman of CNBC recently sat down with Steve Jobs to discuss the new and upcoming products Apple announced during the MacWorld Expo held earlier this week. Jobs was asked about the format war and if he thought Apple had usurped both Blu-ray and HD DVD with their addition of HD movie rentals to iTunes. His response was, "Clearly, Blu-ray won, but in the new world order of instant online movie rentals, in HD, no one will care about what format is where." We, of course, disagree with the "Mac Daddy" about the second part.

Blu-ray Extends Sales Lead After Warner Announcement

Home Media Magazine is reporting that the Nielson VideoScan data shows Blu-ray captured 85% of the high definition media market the week following the Warner Brothers exclusivity announcement. At the top of the list was Lionsgate's '3:10 to Yuma', which sold four times as many units as the second place title, Sony's 'Resident Evil: Extinction'.

Assassination of Jesse James Gets Moved Up

Warner Home Video has revealed that the DVD and Blu-ray release of 'The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford' will now be released on February 5th instead of the initially announced date of February 26th. The move is likely to take advantage of the pre-Oscar buzz surrounding the film. No specs have changed at this time.

Fox Delays Master & Commander but Adds Others

Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will delay the Blu-ray release of 'Master and Commander: Far Side of the World' from February 5th until June. This was done in order to pair it with other "Father's Day" titles. These titles will include Blu-ray release of 'Mrs. Doubtfire', 'Patton', 'The Longest Day', 'The Sand Pebbles', 'A Bridge Too Far' and 'Battle of Britain'. No firm dates or specs as of yet.

I Am Legend Gets Blu-ray Release Date

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the Will Smith hit 'I Am Legend' to Blu-ray on March 18th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No specs have been announced at this time, but an interesting extra was revealed. Along with the normal theatrical version is an alternative version with a controversial ending. No word if this title would utilize seamless branching to show both versions.

CharisMac Adds Blu-ray Support

CharisMac Engineering today released an update to their Describe disc authoring software adding native Apple OSX and Blu-ray support. With this additional support, Leopard users looking to add a Blu-ray drive to their machine now have another option for the their authoring needs. The software does have support for Apple's AAC file format, so backing up your iTunes content on Blu-ray is easier than ever.

BluFocus Assists Blu-ray Studios with Quality Control

A new company, BluFocus, has formed in order to assist movie studios with quality control checks on their Blu-ray releases. Because Blu-ray titles are sophisticated systems of video, audio, and interactive features, testing is needed to ensure that they operate on all available players flawlessly before release.

HMM: HD DVD Should "Knock It Off" for Inevitable Blu-ray Victory

Home Media Magazine, the weekly industry magazine which alerts retailers and those inside the home media industry to news and releases, has posted a statement to the HD DVD Promotional Group: "Knock it off". Stating consumer confusion as the reason for lack of consumer adoption of high definition home media, magazine contributor Thomas K. Arnold has asked that HD DVD step down instead of delaying the inevitable Blu-ray victory.

Om Shanti Om the Latest Bollywood Film to Blu-ray (Updated)

Eros Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Bollywood film 'Om Shanti Om' to Blu-ray on January 22nd, day-and-date with the DVD release. The film broke box office records in its India debut, and played to packed crowds during its limited US release. Not all specs and features have been announced at this time, but we do know that video will be 1080p. Stay tuned for more soon.

Enchanted Blu-ray Gets Dated

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the sleeper hit 'Enchanted' to Blu-ray on March 18th, day-and-date with the DVD release. This title was previously announced for an Easter release, but we now have a firm date. Extras remain the same, with making-of featurettes, deleted scenes, outtakes, and the BD-Java game "D-Files".

Predator and Commando Get New Blu-ray Date

Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will release the Arnold Schwarzenegger classics 'Predator' and 'Commando' to Blu-ray on April 15th. Both releases will be encoded in 1080p MPEG-2 and accompanied by DTS-HD MA audio. Full extras have yet to be officially announced, but expect only the minimal.

Best Buy to Sell Exclusive Justin Timberlake Blu-ray

Best Buy has announced that they will sell the upcoming 'Justin Timberlake: Live from Madison Square Garden' Blu-ray exclusively on January 29. The disc, which is a Sony BMG release, will feature 1080p video and 5.1 PCM audio. Extras will mirror the DVD release from last year, which includes audio commentary and over 80 minutes of extras.

Multimedia software company CyberLink is at CES showing the latest versions of their applications, including PowerDVD 7 Ultra which was one of the first programs you could use to play back Blu-ray Discs on your PC. CyberLink was showing the latest update which allows your PC to become Profile 1.1 compliant.

CES 2008: Blu-ray Disc Association Press Conference

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) held a press conference on Monday in order to discuss with reporters the gains made by the format during the past year, and talk about the group's future plans. The conference was hosted by BDA spokesperson and Pioneer Senior Vice President of Andy Parsons, and featured representatives from all major Blu-ray studios.

CES 2008: Philips, Sharp, LG and HP

After spending the entire first day either at the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) booth or the various press conferences, I was eager to get out on the show floor and see what Blu-ray companies were showing at their booths, as well as how much attention their Blu-ray products were receiving. Not surprisingly, the excitement I witnessed at the BDA booth could be seen across the entire show floor.

HBO to Back Blu-ray Exclusively

When Warner announced that they would back Blu-ray exclusively, there was no immediate confirmation that New Line Cinema and HBO would follow, only speculation that it was highly likely. The very next day New Line confirmed that they would follow Warner and back Blu-ray exclusively and now, a few days after the Warner announcement, HBO has also confirmed that they are "following the same policy as Warner Home Video." according to HBO Video president Henry McGee.

Today at CES, Lionsgate announced their new MOLOG, or, Movie Blog, BD Live feature. This interactive feature allows a viewer to participate in online discussions regarding Lionsgate Blu-ray titles. This online discussion community will be accessible from a BD Live player and blogging can be done while the film is being viewed or as a standalone feature.

Verbatim, one of the largest manufacturers of blank media, are displaying their latest discs at CES. Included in the selection are BD-R and BD-RE 50GB dual layered (DL) media, mini BD-R/RE for camcorders, and standard 25GB single layered (SL) BD-Rs and BD-REs.
