Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Third Big Week for Blu-ray

For the third straight week since Warner Brothers announced they would exclusively support Blu-ray, the format has held a commanding lead in high definition movie sales. Home Media Magazine has released Nielson VideoScan First Alert data, and Blu-ray held 82% of the high definition market during the week ending January 27th.

Digital Playground Promotes New Blu-ray Releases

Adult film studio Digital Playground has taken out a full-page ad in the latest issue of Home Media Magazine in order to promote their upcoming Blu-ray releases. Shown in the ad are Blu-ray versions of 'Island Fever 4', 'Pirates', and 'Babysitters'. The unmissable tag line in the ad "So Real You Can Feel It" is in the trademark blue color accustom to Blu-ray.

Trainspotting, Erin Brockovich See Blu-ray Release in Japan

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Japan has announced five new Blu-ray titles, including the cult classic 'Trainspotting' and fan favorite 'Erin Brockovich', all to be released on April 23rd. All five titles - which also include releases of the Belgium films 'Dark Portals' and 'Michell Vaillant' as well as the Japanese release of 'District B13' - will get 1080p AVC transfers with 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtracks in both English and Japanese ('Dark Portals' will receive a 6.1 Dolby TrueHD track in both languages).

National Treasure Films Announced for Simultaneous Blu-ray Release

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced that they will release both 'National Treasure' and its sequel 'National Treasure: Book of Secrets' for Blu-ray on May 20th, with 'Book of Secrets' being a day-and-date release with the DVD. In typical Disney fashion, both features will likely see 1080p AVC video transfers along with 24-bit PCM audio.

Sharkwater Gets Blu-ray Release Date

As we reported a few days ago, National Geographic revealed that they are now Blu-ray exclusive, and their first Blu-ray only HD will be 'Sharkwater'. Well, we now have a release date and specs for that release: National Geographic will release 'Sharkwater' for Blu-ray on April 8th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented in 1080p (most likely VC-1) with a Dolby Digital soundtrack. The only extra announced so far is a making-of featurette.

Oerlikon Sells Blu-ray Manufacturing Unit to Singulus

OC Oerlikon Corporation has announced that they have sold their Blu-ray manufacturing unit to Singulus Technologies AG for an undisclosed sum. The sale was prompted by the company's desire to focus on growth in their solar power business. Singulus, who already controls more than 60% of the optical disc market, will utilize the purchase to strengthen their high definition business.

More Dragon Ball Z for Blu-ray

FUNimation Entertainment has announced that they will bring two more Dragon Ball Z films to Blu-ray. Following the success of their 'Dragon Ball Z: Broly Double Feature' release, FUNimation will release a new disc with Dragon Ball Z films 'Dead Zone' and 'World's Strongest' together. No specs have been announced at this time, but expect similar treatment as their previous release, which includes 1080p AVC and a Dolby Digital soundtrack.

Gattaca Goes Special Edition for Blu-ray Release

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has released updated specifications for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Gattaca', which is due to hit store shelves March 11th. In addition to the previously announced special features which have been ported from the old DVD release, the Blu-ray will include the new documentary "Do You Alter?" and the making-of featurette "Welcome to Gattaca" in high definition.

Surround Records Announces Blu-ray Support

Indie music distributor Surround Records has announced that they will begin releasing titles on Blu-ray. Previously, they released their content, which consist of multichannel audio experiences, exclusively on the the HD DVD format. No date has been announced for their first Blu-ray title, nor which title they would bring to the format first, but their work has begun on the upcoming release.

Yukikaze Sees Blu-ray Box Set Release

Bandai Visual USA has announced that they will bring the OVA series 'Yukikaze' to Blu-ray in the US on April 8th. The 3 disc box set, which was released in Japan a few days ago, features all five episodes of the popular OVA, including deluxe bonus features and never before seen footage. The title comes from the famous GONZO studio and has been digitally remastered in high definition for this release.

National Geographic Goes Blu-ray Exclusive

National Geographic has confirmed that they will only be releasing high definition titles on the Blu-ray format. The decision to go format exclusive comes after Warner Brothers, the company which distributes their content, decided to go Blu-ray exclusive earlier this month. While no official press release will be issued on the subject by National Geographic, all future releases will fall under this new policy.

EMI Music Japan to Release First Blu-ray

EMI Music Japan has announced that they will release the Yumi Matsutoya film 'Yuming Spectacle Shangrila III' for Blu-ray on March 5th, day-and-date with the DVD release. A total of 40 high definition cameras were used to give a 3D view of the stage for the recently held concert. The two disc set will also come with the bonus DVD (from the DVD set) and feature both 5.1 and 2.0 PCM tracks.

Confirmed: Sonic Scenarist to be Exclusively Blu-ray

As we reported yesterday, Sonic Solutions has announced that their Professional Products Group will now focus its research and development on the creation of applications for Blu-ray authoring. Sonic will now work to create new tools to make use of BD-Live interactivity. Previously, Scenarist had support for HD DVD authoring as well, but will now cease sales of that product line.

Rumor: Sonic to Exclusively Support Blu-ray Encoding

Inside sources have alerted Blu-ray.com that Sonic Solutions will soon announce that they are dropping HD DVD support on their Scenarist line of professional disc authoring tools. While they will continue to support existing HD DVD customers, focus will now be on generating new business for their Blu-ray encoding solution. No word on whether or not they will also drop HD DVD support on their popular Roxio line of consumer burning software at this time.

FS Film Goes Blu-ray Exclusive

Another fallout of the Warner announcement, Finnish distributor FS Film will now support Blu-ray exclusively. They currently have distribution rights to titles from many different studios, but appear to focus most of their efforts on releasing Fox titles. Soon after Warner Brothers announced that they would support Blu-ray exclusively this summer, all HD DVD product listings on their website disappeared. It has now been confirmed that they have dropped the format in favor of Blu-ray.

Run Fat Boy Run Announced in UK

Entertainment in Video (EIV) has announced that they will bring the David Schwimmer directed comedy 'Run Fat Boy Run' to Blu-ray on February 18th. No specs have been announced at this time, but extras include audio commentary, deleted scenes, outtakes, bloopers, and the theatrical trailer. No US release date has been given at this time.

MSI: Laptops to Utilize Blu-ray This Year

An executive from Micro-Star International (MSI), a leading computer parts manufacturer, predicts that many laptops released this year will come equipped with a Blu-ray drive. Many high-end laptops from various companies offer Blu-ray drives as an option, including top manufacturers like Dell, HP, and Acer, but this prediction suggests that the technology will become more mainstream as prices for the drives continue to drop.

Sony Offers Blu-ray Rebate to German HD DVD Owners

In the latest advertisement from German retailer Saturn, Sony is offering 150 Euros off the purchase of a Sony BDP-S300 when current HD DVD owners turn in their used players. This is an outstanding deal for those high definition fans in Germany who would otherwise have been left with a very expensive paperweight. Currently this offer is only available in Germany.

Neil Young's "Archives" to Get Blu-ray Release

Neil Young's continuously delayed "Archives" project will finally be released later this year on both DVD and Blu-ray (no CD release is planned). The first set, 'Volume 1: 1963 - 1972', will feature unreleased studio tracks and live performance from the legendary song writer, as well as accompanying book with interviews and personal notes. No specs or track lists are available at this time.

Fox Announces Mr Magorium for Blu-ray

Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will release 'Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium' for Blu-ray on March 4th, day-and-date with the DVD release. The BD-50 disc will be authored in BD-Java, and feature AVC video and an DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. Extras include seven featurettes, all of which will be presented in high definition.

6th Day Gets Blu-ray Release

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will release the Arnold Schwarzenegger film 'The 6th Day' on Blu-ray April 8th. Video will be presented in 2.40 1080p accompanied by a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. Extras include a Showtime special, making-of featurette, storyboard comparisons, and RePet infomercial and TV spot.

Woolworths to Support Blu-ray Exclusively

After analyzing Christmastime sales data, UK retailer Woolworth's has decided to drop their in-store support for HD DVD, and will be featuring Blu-ray players and discs only beginning in March. Blu-ray titles held a sales advantage of 10-to-1 over its rival at Woolworth's 820 retail locations, and as the largest retailer of high definition discs in the UK, they are taking a stand against the format war.

Disney's Magical Blu-ray Tour Extended Through 2008

Seven North American cities have now been set for the 2008 run of Disney's Magical Blu-ray Tour, a successful Blu-ray Disc promotional event presented by Walt Disney Home Entertainment and sponsored by Panasonic. Visitors to the educational exhibition will be able to preview some of Disney's biggest 2008 Blu-ray releases, including 'Finding Nemo' and 'The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe'.

Another Huge Win for Blu-ray

The latest Home Media Magazine has been released with the latest Nielson VideoScan data, and for the week ending January 20th, Blu-ray disc sales accounted for 83% of the high definition market. During this time, there were no Buy-One-Get-One-Free sales, showing the complete dominance that Blu-ray holds in the high definition market even without purchasing incentives.

The Golden Compass Gets Blu-ray Release

New Line Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the fantasy epic 'The Golden Compass' exclusively to Blu-ray on April 29th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No specs are available at this time, but over 2.5 hours of extras will be presented, including three featurettes and a Blu-ray exclusive Visually Enhanced Commentary.

CES 2008: Wrap-up with New Photos

This years CES as usual offered lots of exciting new Blu-ray announcements and the highlight was of course Warner's announcement that they're going to be backing the Blu-ray format exclusively. There was also a wide range of Blu-ray players and hardware on display at the show, which show the massive support from CE companies that Blu-ray enjoys. Imitation Blu-ray Movies Come to US

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right? Well, we've all seen the mall kiosk vendors who sell Chinese movies, and it appears they can't help but feel the pressure from Blu-ray either. Forum member X400 was at his local mall and something caught his eye; it was a DVD with artwork used to emulate a Blu-ray case.

Sony Shrinks Blu-ray Lasers

Sony has announced that they have successfully developed a read/write Blu-ray laser which is only 3mm thick. The result of joint development with Nichia, the laser can read and write dual-layer media, including those which use organic dyes. Sony expects that the reduced size and complexity of the laser assembly will result in reduced production costs. The first planned application for the laser will be a 9.5mm laptop drive sometime this year.

Over America and Over California Coming to Blu-ray

Topics Entertainment has revealed that they will introduce Over America in High Definition and Over California in High Definition on Blu-ray. The Emmy Award-winning PBS series, presented for the first time ever in a high-definition, features breathtaking awe-inspiring imagery and beautiful original music scores. Both releases have been given a street date of February 12th.

Offbeat: Blu-ray Inspired Cosmetics

This is a bit different than the news we typically cover, but cosmetics company Cargo has released a "blu_ray" cosmetics line. Labeled as "high definition make-up", it is designed for make-up artists who are filming in high definition. Besides the name similarities, packaging designs are also very similar, and it is difficult to miss the obvious connection.
