Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Blu-ray Outpacing DVD in Western Europe

Futuresource (resulting company of the merger between Understanding & Solutions and DTC) have announced that, according to their analysis, in Western Europe, Blu-ray player sales during the first three years of the format have outpaced DVD player sales during its first three years. This trend is predicted to continue through 2011, or the sixth year of the Blu-ray format.

CJ7 Gets US Blu-ray Date

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Stephen Chow film 'CJ7' to Blu-ray on August 12th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented as 2.40:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a Chinese 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack (an English Dolby TrueHD dub will also be provided).

Empire Film Group Announces Blu-ray Support

Empire Film Group has announced that they will be releasing their content, which includes the recently revealed Dakota Fanning and Robin Wright-Penn film 'Hounddog' on Blu-ray disc this January. Don't feel bad if you haven't heard of the studio; 'Hounddog' will be their first theatrical release with two more planned by the end of the year.

History Channel Presents The Universe Blu-ray

A&E Home Video will bring the History Channel series 'The Universe - Season 1' to Blu-ray on October 14th. Video will be presented as 1.78:1 1080p and accompanied by a Dolby Digital soundtrack. The 3-disc set will include all 13 episodes from the first season along with the feature-length documentary "Beyond the Big Bang".

Lonesome Dove Coming to Blu-ray

Genius Products has announced that they will bring the Emmy and Golden Globe award winning TV miniseries 'Lonesome Dove' to Blu-ray as a two-disc set on August 5th. The film, which stars Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones, will be presented in 1.78:1 1080p accompanied by a Dolby Digital soundtrack.

Kill Bill Coming This September

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has revealed via their retailer site that they will be bring 'Kill Bill Part 1' and 'Kill Bill Part 2' to Blu-ray on September 9th. Its way too early to talk about specs or special features - we'll have to wait for the press release for that - but the fact that these highly anticipated films are finally coming to Blu-ray should make many fans smile.

Tartan Video USA Sold to Palisades

Tartan Video USA, the US division of the UK-based, art-house distributor Tartan Films, has been shut down. As of June 1st, Tartan shut their doors and auctioned off the US distribution rights to their library of approximately 100 films to Palisades Media Corp, an advertising financial firm based out of New York.

Paramount Launches Blu-ray Support Site

Paramount Home Entertainment has launched a support website for their Blu-ray disc releases. Similar to what they had for their HD DVD releases, the site talks about what Blu-ray is, current and upcoming releases from the studio, and general tech support for existing Paramount Blu-ray releases.

Sony Expands Terre Haute Blu-ray Manufacturing Facility

Sony has announced that they have inked a deal with Indiana Secretary of Commerce Nate Feltman to expand the Terre Haute facility. The $133M expansion project will add 85 jobs at the facility which already cranks out 425,000 Blu-ray discs per day (in addition to CDs, DVDs, and UMDs). Mastering, replication, packaging, and distribution areas of the facility will all be expanded to meet ever-increasing demand.

Black Mask Coming to Blu-ray

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that they are bringing Jet Li's action film 'Black Mask' to Blu-ray on September 2nd. Video will be presented in 1080p with a 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. Extras include detailed explanations of the Wushu Technique used in the film, Wushu in Action chapter selection, and the Black Mask interactive film trivia game.

Lionsgate Announces More Animated Superheroes Coming to Blu

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that they are bringing two animated superhero film to Blu-ray. Both 'The Invincible Iron Man' and 'Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow' will hit store shelves on September 2nd. No technical specs have been announced for either release, but plan on seeing 1080p video and a PCM soundtrack similar to their previous animated releases.

Summit to Distribute Concert Hot Spot Blu-rays

Concert Hot Spot has revealed that they have inked a deal with Summit Home Entertainment to distribute their music titles on Blu-ray. Previously, Concert Hot Spot distributed such music titles from Montley Crue and Ozzfest through Warner Home Video. Interestingly enough, Summit Entertainment is run by Steve Nickerson, formerly of Warner Home Video.

Hulk Blu-ray to House 70 Minutes of Cut Footage

During an interview with director Louis Leterrier, he mentioned that the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'The Incredible Hulk', which is set to be released this Friday, will contain 70 minutes of cut footage. Apparently, during the editing process, some much-loved scenes got cut (including one which is in the trailer, but won't be in the final cut of the film), and the Blu-ray will showcase them all.

The Missing Gets Delayed

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed that yesterday's scheduled Blu-ray release of 'The Missing' has been delayed with no new date currently scheduled. The studio ensures us that the release has not been canceled, just moved. We will be sure to let you know the new date once it has been revealed to us.

Specs for Blu-ray Heroes Seasons Revealed

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has revealed the specs for the upcoming Blu-ray releases of 'Heroes: Season One' and 'Heroes: Season Two', both due to hit store shelves on August 26th. The popular TV series will get the full high definition treatment, with video being presented in 1.78:1 1080p accompanied by a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Disney Makes BD-Live Their Priority

At a press event Monday, Bob Chapek, president of Walt Disney Studios, made it clear to audiences that every Disney branded Blu-ray release after the October 7th release of 'Sleeping Beauty' would include some form of BD-Live. As you probably already know, 'Sleeping Beauty' will include many BD-Live elements to showcase what Disney has been working on to make Blu-ray highly interactive.

When We Left Earth Gets New Blu-ray Date

Image Entertainment in conjunction with Discovery Channel has revealed updated specs and a new date for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'When We Left Earth: The NASA Missions', now due to hit store shelves September 30th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No word on the specs for the video, besides it being high definition, but we do know that the soundtrack will be DTS-HD Master Audio.

LGMB: Amazon 30 Blu-ray Titles for $15

Warner to Focus on Blu-ray over Theatrial Releases

President and CEO of Time Warner Inc, Jeff Bewkes, commented that his studio would release fewer theatrical film and begin to focus more on building wider consumer adoption of Blu-ray. While the movie studio has seen success, the profits being generated by its home media arm have trumped all box office take.

Singulus: Blu-ray Adoption Faster than DVD

German optical disc equipment manufacturer Singulus has revealed that, during the first year of dual-layer technology, Blu-ray orders have surpassed that of DVD. For the year after dual-layer DVDs were introduced, Singulus filled orders for 17 machines. One year after dual-layer Blu-rays were released, they are reporting 21 orders.

Summit Entertainment has announced that they will bring the brawling drama 'Never Back Down' to Blu-ray on July 29th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No technical specs have been announced for the film at this time. The film will be presented in its extended "Beat Down" version, which is unrated.

Chu: Blu-ray Looks Better than the Theaters

Director Jon M. Chu, whose film 'Step Up 2 The Streets' is coming to Blu-ray on July 15th, day-and-date with the DVD release commented about the release, "It's beautiful. The colors just pop. You get to see because we play a lot in the shadows. That's what we wanted to do and sometimes the print was a little dark to me. On the Blu-ray, just consistently you know what you're getting and you can play in those shadows. You can see it and it doesn't feel dark. It just feels moody."

As we reported earlier, for this week only, Wal-Mart is offering a $100 gift certificate free with the purchase of any Blu-ray player (including the PlayStation 3) online or instore. This includes the Magnavox NB500MG9 which can be had for $298 (or less than $200 net with the free gift card). Additionally, they are offering a nice selection of Blu-ray titles (including but not limited to: Flags of Our Fathers, 3:10 to Yuma, 300, Shooter, Blood Diamond, Training Day, War, The Fifth Element, A Knight's Tale, The Patriot, The Last Samurai, and Syriana) for $15.

Humor: MGS4 Boasts About Blu-ray Capacity

During a sequence in the upcoming PlayStation 3 game Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriot, the lead character is talking with his support team via a video data link, and a direct reference is made to Blu-ray and its capacity. Kojima is known for their in game humor, and they were sure to not disappoint in their latest effort.
