Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

An American in Paris, Gigi Coming to Blu-ray in 2009

Earlier this year, Warner Home Video announced that 'An American in Paris' and 'Gigi' would be released on Blu-ray this year as part of their 85th Anniversary celebration. Fans were heart-broken when both 'An American in Paris: Special Edition' and 'Gigi: 50th Anniversary Special Edition' were announced for DVD release, but not Blu-ray, but Warner has now confirmed that both titles will be coming to Blu-ray in 2009.

First Look Announces The Breed for Blu-ray

First Look Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the indie horror film 'The Breed' to Blu-ray on October 21st. No technical specs or special features have been announced for the Blu-ray at this time, though the previous DVD release of this Wes Craven presented film featured a documentary as its sole extra feature.

Warner Offers Peek at Fall Line-Up

Warner Home Video has revealed a piece of their upcoming Blu-ray releases scheduled for this fall at the Entertainment Merchants Association Conference in Las Vegas. At the event, they confirmed (again) that HBO's ground-breaking WWII series 'Band of Brothers' would be released this fall on Blu-ray.

Universal Excited About Wanted's Blu-ray Future

At the premiere of the Universal Studios' film 'Wanted', an excited Craig Kornblau, President of Universal Studios Home Entertainment commented, "What 'The Matrix' did for DVD, this could do for Blu-ray." After years of trash-talking Blu-ray, its great to see the studio that once loathed Blu-ray, now getting excited about its potential.

How the West Was Won Delayed Two Weeks

Warner Home Video has revealed that the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'How the West Was Won' has been delayed two week and is now scheduled to hit store shelves on September 9th, day-and-date with the DVD release. This newly restored and remastered film will be presented in 2.89:1 1080p VC-1 video accompanied by a 5.1 soundtrack.

Home Media Expo: Blu-ray Titles Revealed

At the Home Media Expo, a few distributors revealed some upcoming titles they have planned for Blu-ray release. Shout! Factory revealed that they would bring the skiing documentary 'Warren Miller: Playground' to Blu-ray on October 14th. Big Vision Entertainment revealed that they would bring the all-female mixed martial arts event 'Fatal Femmes Fighting' to Blu-ray on November 4th.

Sequels for The Prince & Me Coming to Blu-ray

First Look Studios has announced that they are bringing 'The Prince & Me 2: Royal Wedding' and 'The Prince & Me 3: A Royal Honeymoon' to Blu-ray on October 28th, the later being day-and-date with the DVD release. Both films are direct-to-video sequels to the 2004 film 'The Prince & Me', which was released by Paramount.

Felon Announced for Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will release 'Felon' for Blu-ray on August 12th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented in 1.85:1 1080p AVC with a 5.1 English TrueHD soundtrack. The lone announced extra is "The Shark Tank: An Inside Look at Felon" featurette.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they are bringing the Academy Award-winning foreign film 'The Counterfeiters' to Blu-ray on August 5th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented as 1.85:1 1080p AVC and be accompanied by a 5.1 German TrueHD. This release will also be BD-Live Enabled.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they are bringing 'Cirque Du Soleil: Corteo' to Blu-ray on September 2nd. One of the productions of the world famous Cirque Du Soleil company, this Blu-ray will capture all the magic of the performance in stunning high definition. Pioneer Lowers Blu-ray Drive Prices

Pioneer has recently lowered the price of its BDC-S02BKZ Blu-ray combo drive by over 40% in China. Now priced at approximately $145 USD, Pioneer is hoping that more computer manufacturers will use the drives when building PCs. The expectation is that, as the Olympics near, consumer interest in high definition content will sky-rocket, Blu-ray along with it.

Sony Plan First Combo Blu-ray Drive

Sony has announced that they will introduce their first Blu-ray combo drive for Taiwan this July. The drive, which is expected to retail for around NT$7000 ($230 USD), will have the ability to both read Blu-ray discs, including Blu-ray movies, as well as burn DVD and CD media. No technical specs have been revealed at this time.

Paul's Brain Trust - The Blade Runner Screening

June 14th marked an unforgettable day in Hollywood. Scores of film fans from all over the globe descended on the Warner lot at 2 PM that day for a screening of Ridley Scott's landmark film, Blade Runner. This wasn't any ordinary screening, however, as all the proceeds from the event were going to Paul's Brain Trust, a charity benefitting Paul Prischman. For those of you who haven't seen the notices in the forums or any of the links on other sites, Paul, a DVD producer who worked on the Blade Runner Blu-ray set from last year, was recently diagnosed with brain cancer. The Brain Trust was established to help his family with medical bills and expenses.

Metropolis Coming to Blu-ray in 2009

Kino International has revealed that they are bringing the 1927 Fritz Lang silent film 'Metropolis' to Blu-ray sometime in 2009. The film, which was painstakingly restored by Kino in 2001, is often credited with starting the Sci-Fi genre. At this point in planning, it is too early to speculate about technical specs, but special features should be similar to the DVD release.

Faces of Death Coming to Blu-ray

Gorgon Video has announced that they are bringing the legendary gore documentary 'Faces of Death' to Blu-ray on October 7th, day-and-date with the DVD re-release. A brand new high definition transfer was created for this release from extremely rare vault material and will be accompanied by a 5.1 soundtrack.

NEC Plans for 8X Blu-ray Recording

NEC has announced that they have begun shipping samples of their latest SoC (System on a Chip) for use in Blu-ray Disc applications. The chip, which has been named SCOMBO/UM2A, will support 8X reading and writing of Blu-ray disc media. Other improvements on the chip include a reduction in size of 20% and 33% less power consumption than the previous model.

Warner Pledges BD-Live for Winter

During the keynote address at the Entertainment Supply Chain Academy conference, Darcy Antonellis, President of Warner Technical Operations noted that the studio would begin utilizing BD-Live features as early as this winter. The yet-to-be-named title would include real-time viewing, library tools, a search engine, a recommendation tool with e-mail reminders, ringtones and wallpapers.

Rest Stop Films Coming to Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that they are bringing the Raw Feed horror film 'Rest Stop' and its sequel 'Rest Stop: Don't Look Back' to Blu-ray on October 7th, the latter coming day-and-date with the DVD release. Both films will be distributed on BD-25s; video will come as 1080p VC-1 accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

Bond is Officially Blu

Fox Home Entertainment in conjunction with MGM Home Entertainment have announced that they will bring six classic James Bond films to Blu-ray this fall. All six title - 'Dr. No', 'Die Another Day', 'Live and Let Die', 'For Your Eyes Only', 'From Russia with Love', and 'Thunderball' - are currently planned to hit store shelves on October 21st (October 20th internationally).

Within Temptation to Release Blu-ray Concert

Rock band Within Temptation is planning to release their concert film 'Black Symphony' for Blu-ray on September 22nd, day-and-date with the DVD release. The concert was filmed with 14 high definition cameras at Rotterdam's Ahoy Arena on February 7, 2008. No technical specs have been announced at this time, but we do know the disc will feature many behind-the-scenes features.

Forbidden Kingdom Coming to Blu-ray

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that they are bringing the Jet Li and Jackie Chan film 'Forbidden Kingdom' to Blu-ray on September 9th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No technical specs have been announced for the release at this time, which will come as a two-disc set.

Panasonic Introduces 6X BD-R

Panasonic has announced that they have developed the world's first 6X BD-R, which is set to go on sale in Japan next month in both single and dual layer configurations. The new discs allow a maximum transfer speed of 216Mbps, which is 20% more than that of a comparable 16X DVD. This will allow for even faster recording than previously possible.

Japan Leavies Royalty Fees on Blu-ray

Japan's ministries of Economy, Trade and Industry and Education, Science and Technology have unanimously agreed to levy a private copy royalty fee against all recordable Blu-ray discs and Blu-ray Disc Recorders in Japan. This was enacted in order to compensate copyright holders whose property would likely be copied using Blu-ray technology.

Sleeping Beauty BD-Live Event

About a week ago, Disney officially unveiled the BD-Live features that they are including with the upcoming Platinum Edition Blu-ray release of 'Sleeping Beauty', due to hit store shelves on October 4th. Luckily, they decided to take their presentation on the road, and today visited Washington, DC in order to show off what they have been working on to those of us stuck on the East Coast.
