Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Austin Powers Set Coming to Blu-ray

New Line Home Entertainment in conjunction with Warner Home Video have announced that they will release 'Austin Powers Collection: Shagadelic Edition, Loaded with Extra Mojo' for Blu-ray on December 2nd. The set will include all three Austin Powers films ('International Man of Mystery', 'The Spy Who Shagged Me', and 'Goldmember') in stunning high definition.

Microsoft Adds Blu-ray Support to Windows

Microsoft is planning to release "Windows Feature Pack for Storage" which will add support for master style optical burning on Blu-ray discs. The pack has been in non-disclosure laced beta testing for quiet some time, but can now be seen on the Microsoft Connect website. When released, the pack will upgrade Windows XP and Vista, as well as Server 2003 and 2008.

Blu-ray Release for Prince Caspian Revealed

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has revealed that they will bring the second film in the Narnia series 'The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian' to Blu-ray on December 2nd, day-and-date with the DVD release. Technical specs have yet to be announced at this time, but a top-quality video and audio presentation is pretty much guaranteed.

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Billy Bob Thornton and Halle Berry film 'Monster's Ball' to Blu-ray on November 4th. No technical specs have been announced at this time, but expect the typical AVC high definition video and DTS-HD Master Audio treatment from the studio.

While some studios are feeling the pain of transition, others are thriving. Neil Young Archive Gets November Release Date

According to UK music website Uncut, the upcoming Blu-ray release of the Neil Young album 'Archives Volume One 1963-1972' will hit store shelves on November 3rd. No additional information was revealed about the 10-disc set, but we should hear more soon. For those who don't recall, the set will feature high quality audio and video from the legendary artist's early career.

Paramount Offers $10 Rebate for DVD Owners; New Titles Revealed

Paramount Home Entertainment will soon offer DVD owners $10 via mail-in-rebate when they purchase select Blu-ray titles. These titles include 'Transformers' (Sep 2), 'The Godfather: The Coppola Restoration' (Sep 23), and 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street' (Oct 21). Additionally, the rebate applies to the currently unannounced titles 'Old School', 'Stardust', and 'Zodiac'.

Yamaha to Announce Blu-ray Player

In what appears to be another leaked announcement from the upcoming CEDIA show, Yamaha is preparing to announce their first Blu-ray Disc player. The player, the Yamaha S2900, will be BonusView (Profile v1.1) compatible and feature interoperability and physical features comparable to Yahama's line of receivers.

New Panasonic Blu-ray Players to be Announced at CEDIA

On September 3rd, Panasonic will announce the addition of two more Blu-ray Disc players to their already impressive high definition arsenal. The Panasonic DMP-BD35 and DMP-BD55 will both feature an updated version of the UniPhierŪ video processor as well as an Ethernet port for BD-Live compatibility.

Mitsubishi to Begin Producing Blu-ray Laser Diodes

Mitsubishi Chemical is said to be planning to enter the Blu-ray burner pick-up head (PUH) market with the production of high-power laser diodes. Currently, only three manufacturers make these diodes, with Sony keeping most to themselves, leaving manufacturers to fight for small supplies from Sharp and Nichia. With the number of products using Blu-ray burners on the rise, they feel that their product will help fill the gap between supply and demand.

Speed and Angels Gets Blu-ray Release

In an early announcement to retailers, Vivendi Visual Entertainment has revealed that they will bring 'Speed and Angels' to Blu-ray on September 16th, day-and-date with the DVD release. National Geographic's Extreme Coming to Blu-ray

National Geographic in conjunction with Warner Home Video have announced that they will bring the IMAX feature 'Extreme' to Blu-ray on November 4th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No technical specs have been announced at this time except that the 45-minute feature will be released on a BD-25.

The Godfather Trilogy Remixed for Perfection

The upcoming Blu-ray release of 'The Godfather Collection: The Coppola Restoration' will feature not only a restored and remastered video presentation, but also a new 5.1 soundtrack mix thanks to the folks at POP Sound. Paramount tasked the company to remix the legendary films in order to bring the sound quality up to today's standards.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment have revealed the technical specs and special features for the upcoming Blu-ray release of Judd Apatow's 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall', due to hit store shelves on September 30th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Jim Morrison lives! Well, at least on Blu-ray. Today, Lionsgate Home Entertainment releases the Oliver Stone film 'The Doors', an accurate (or not so accurate, depending on who you ask) depiction of the rise and fall of The Lizard King. Regardless how dramatized the story may have become, the film presents an inside look into one of the most influential rock bands of their time.

Warner Home Video Japan has announced that they will bring the 1980's classic films 'The Goonies' and 'Gremlins' to Blu-ray on October 8th. Neither of these titles has been announced for the US yet, though 'The Goonies' has already appeared in press material for a European release as well. We'll keep an eye out for an official US date, but it could be shaping up for an expensive October.

Lionsgate's Revenue Up Due to Blu-ray Sales

Lionsgate has announced that their fiscal first-quarter home entertainment revenue is up 47% from the same period last year, mostly due to the increase in sales of their films on the Blu-ray disc format. For the quarter ending June 30th, revenue was $152.2M, up from $103.8M a year earlier. With overall spending similar to last year, Lionsgate is gradually increasing their market share against the larger studios.

Casino Royale Gets Collector's Edition Treatment (Updated)

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Casino Royale: Collector's Edition' to Blu-ray on October 21st, day-and-date with the DVD release. October 21st is also the same day that MGM will be debuting six classic James Bond films on Blu-ray. This two-disc set will feature 2.40:1 1080p AVC video. It is still unknown if the set will retain the original PCM audio track or will get a new Dolby TrueHD audio encode.

Hitachi Brings Blu-ray Camcorder to US

Hitachi has announced that they will bring their latest Blu-ray camcorder, the DZ-BD10HA, to the US this September, only a month after it gets released in Japan. The camcorder, which is identical to the Japanese variant previously announced, can record on either an 8cm Blu-ray Drive, an internal 30GB hard drive, or SDHC card. Hitachi has set MSRP at $999.
