Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Panasonic Wins Emmy for AVC Work

Panasonic has announced that the Joint Video Team Standards Committee (JVT), of which they are a member, will be awarded with an Academy of Television Arts & Sciences 2008 Primetime Emmy Engineering Award for their contribution to the development of the H.264 MPEG-4/AVC High Profile - the video standard which is now used for encoding Blu-ray films by many studios including Sony and Fox.

Blockbuster Seeing Increased Blu-ray Sales

Jim Keyes, CEO of Blockbuster, stated during a conference call with investors that the movie rental giant is now selling 2,000 to 3,000 Blu-ray Disc players a week since erecting Blu-ray themed kiosks at their retail the locations. Because of this success, he feels that Blockbuster will soon become an ideal location for the rental and purchase of Blu-ray products.

Paramount Home Entertainment has revealed the detailed specs and special features for the upcoming summer blockbuster hit 'Iron Man: Ultimate Edition', due to hit store shelves on September 30th, day-and-date with the DVD release. The two-disc set will feature 1080p video accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

Weinstein Announces Awake for Blu-ray

Weinstein Company Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Jessica Alba thriller 'Awake' to Blu-ray on November 18th. Early details about this upcoming release are slim, but we do know that video will be presented in 1080p VC-1 accompanied by a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. We'll have supplemental features information when it becomes available.

Even More Jeff Dunham Coming to Blu-ray

Image Entertainment has revealed that in addition to the previously announced Blu-ray release of 'Jeff Dunham's Very Special Christmas Special', due to hit store shelves on November 18th, they will also release 'Jeff Dunham: Arguing with Myself' and 'Jeff Dunham: Spark Of Insanity' on the same day.

Koch Reveals More Blu-ray Titles

In an early announcement to retailers, Koch Entertainment has revealed that they will bring the original 1974 version of 'Black Christmas' to Blu-ray on November 11th. Additionally, they are bringing 'Soundstage: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' and the controversial film 'The Story of O' to Blu-ray on the same day.

MGM Officially Announces Carrie; Amityville Horror

Fox Home Entertainment in conjunction with MGM Home Entertainment has officially announced that they are bringing the 'Carrie' and 'Amityville Horror' to Blu-ray on October 7th. Both discs will come on BD-25s utilizing 1080p AVC video and a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. No special features have been announced at this time.

The Happening Coming to Blu-ray

Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the M. Night Shyamalan film 'The Happening' to Blu-ray on October 7th, day-and-date with the DVD release. For the filmmakers first R-Rated film, video will be presented as 1.85:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Daredevil Coming to Blu-ray

Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Ben Affleck comic book film 'Daredevil: Director's Cut' to Blu-ray on September 30th. The director's cut adds an additional 30 minutes of footage to the film. Video will be presented in 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Mummy 3 Will Look and Sound Better on Blu-ray

In an interview with Home Media Magazine, Rob Cohen, director of 'The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor', is telling fans that the film will look and sound better on Blu-ray than in the theaters. He is confident about this because of his use of a digital-intermediate print during post production, where he tweaked the film print in order to ensure perfect quality.

Ritek to Triple Production Capacity By End of Year

Due to increased demand, Ritek has announced that they have begun the process of upgrading an existing DVD production line to produce an addition 250,000 Blu-ray Discs a month, effectively doubling their production output. Later in the year, the company expects to add a third Blu-ray line, bringing total disc production to 750,000 discs per month.

Caligula Coming to Blu-ray

Image Entertainment has announced that they will bring the controversial film 'Caligula' to Blu-ray on November 4th. The film, which goes into great detail of the reported sexual deviance of Roman Emperor Gaius Julius Germanicus, has reached cult status due to its graphic nature. The two-disc set will feature 1.85:1 1080p video accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Woodstock Announced for July 2009

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring 'Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music: Ultimate Collector's Edition' to Blu-ray on July 28th, 2009, day-and-date with the DVD. The release will feature the four-hour Director's Cut of the film which has been remastered from the original film elements and scanned at 2K resolution.

New Details and Date for Beetlejuice Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced new details and a new date for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Beetlejuice: 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition', now due to hit store shelves on October 7th. The release, which will come out three weeks after the DVD, will come on a BD-25 featuring 1080p VC-1 video and a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack (including a Dolby Digital isolated score track).

The Mist and 1408 Get Detailed

Weinstein Company have detailed the extras for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'The Mist' and '1408', both due to hit store shelves on September 16th. Both titles will have video presented in 1080p VC-1 accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtracks. As previously mentioned, 'The Mist' will come as a two-disc set with both the theatrical and "black-and-white" versions.

So, do you have a bug problem? The biggest release this week has to be the Sony Pictures Home Entertainment release of 'Starship Troopers', a film that has gained cult status by way of a strong fan following. Its difficult to recommend this film to those who haven't seen it, but to those who hold this title as a personal favorite - and there are a lot of you - its an easy pick-up.

Pioneer Increases Disc Size to 500GB

About a month ago, Pioneer announced that they had developed a 400GB Blu-ray Disc. Not satisfied that they had exhausted all avenues, they continued developed and found a way to add four additional layers, bringing the total disc capacity to 500GB. As with the 400GB version, the disc is compatible with current Blu-ray drives found in computers, players, and recorders.

Band of Brothers Exclusive Features Announced

Warner Home Video in conjunction with HBO have announced the exclusive features that will be found on the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Band of Brothers', due to hit store shelves on November 11th. In addition to the special features already found on the DVD set, the Blu-ray will include the BonusView feature "In the Words of Easy Company" and the "In the Field with the Men of Easy Company" interactive field guide.

Interview with a Vampire; Poltergeist Announced

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring 'Interview with a Vampire' to Blu-ray on October 7th. A week later, on October 14th, they will bring 'Poltergeist' to Blu-ray as a digibook with never-before-seen photos and inside information. Both titles will be presented in 1080p VC-1 video. It is still unconfirmed in these releases will use Dolby TrueHD or Dolby Digital for the soundtracks.

Best Buy to Release The Police Blu-ray

Best Buy has announced that they bring the concert 'The Police: Certifiable' to Blu-ray day-and-date with the DVD release. The set, which captures the legendary band's entire concert from Buenos Aires, will feature a single Blu-ray disc accompanied by 2 CDs. No technical details have been announced for the title at this time.

FF: Advent Children to Get FFXIII Demo

At the Square-Enix event last week, they announced that the upcoming Blu-ray release of the CGI film 'Final Fantasy: Advent Children Complete' would include a demo of the upcoming PlayStation 3 game Final Fantasy XIII. The film, which is due to be released in Japan in March 2009, currently has no US release date.

Indiana Jones Announced for Japan

Paramount Home Entertainment Japan has announced that they will bring 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' to Blu-ray by the end of this year, day-and-date with the DVD release. A few days ago, the US DVD release was announced with no mention of a US Blu-ray. While a Japanese Blu-ray release doesn't guarantee a US Blu-ray release (or a release anywhere else in the world), hopefully information will materialize soon.
