Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Criterion Offers Upgrade Program, Too

The Criterion Collection has revealed that they will offer an upgrade program for those Criterion DVD owners looking to upgrade their current collection to Blu-ray. Simply send in the DVD disc you want upgraded along with a check for $25 ($20 upgrade fee plus $5 shipping) and they'll send you the Blu-ray version of the title (disc only).

Possible WALL-E Special Features Revealed

DVD Monthly has received exclusive details regarding some of the special features that will be found on the UK release of 'WALL-E', which is due to hit US store shelves on November 18th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No technical specs were revealed besides the previously announced spec that it would be a two-disc release.

Fox Announces Romancing the Stone; Jewel of the Nile for Blu-ray

Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas film 'Romancing the Stone' and its sequel 'Jewel of the Nile' to Blu-ray on October 14th. Both titles will come on a BD-50 featuring 2.35:1 1080p AVC video accompanied by 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks.

3-D is Seeing a Blu Future

Since the invention of motion pictures, Hollywood has used technology as a way to bring in new audiences and increase revenue. Whether is was color film, widescreen, or surround sound, these technologies were used to draw in audiences who would otherwise spend their money on competing entertainment mediums. The next technology step for Hollywood is the move towards stereoscopic 3-D movies.

Samsung BD-P2550 Shows Up at Best Buy

Apparently, Samsung has decided to sneak out their latest player, the BD-P2550, onto store shelves without the usual fanfare. It appears to be a variation on the previously announced BD-P2500, though its difficult to tell what, if any, the differences may be. Early reports on our forum indicate that it is a BonusView player that will receive a BD-Live update at a future date.

Superman Returns Gets TrueHD Treatment

In an early announcement to retailers, Warner Home Video has revealed that they will re-release the Bryan Singer film 'Superman Returns' on September 9th with a Dolby TrueHD and PCM soundtracks. To the disappointment of fans, the original Blu-ray release featured only a Dolby Digital soundtrack while the HD DVD got the lossless audio track. Warner is now rectifying the situation with a proper Blu-ray release.

Artsmagic DVD Announces Blu-ray Titles

Japanese film specialists Artsmagic DVD has announced their first two Blu-ray releases, both set to be released on October 28th. 'Malice@Doll' is an anime that tells the story of a robot prostitute who is trying to survive after the humans it was built to serve have become extinct. The other title is the Takashi Miike film 'The Bird People of China'. No specs or special features have been announced for either release.

Forworld Electronics Offers Budget Blu-ray Player (Updated)

Forworld Electronics has announced that they have begun selling a budget Blu-ray Disc player under their brand name Pony in Taiwan. The player, which retails for about $320US, is cheaper than competing players from Blu-ray leaders such as Sony and Panasonic, and is expected to drive down costs of Blu-ray players in that market.

COMA to Receive Exclusive Blu-ray Release

Available now on Crackle.com, Michael Madsen stars in COMA, a web-based seven-episode series about a city mayor and crime syndicate leader who team together to take down the city's crime boss. The series, which also stars George Hamilton and Paul Ben-Victor, was shot in same style as 'Sin City' and '300' using Sony's high definition cameras.

Cinevolve Announces First Wave of Blu-ray Titles

Cinevolve, a small film distribution company who believes that Blu-ray "shouldn't be a luxury item", has revealed their initial slate of Blu-ray titles. On October 21st, the company will release 'Holiday Favorites With the Wonderland Carolers' followed by 'The Line' which is to be released a few weeks later on November 25th.

Warner Announces Essential Holiday Collection

Warner Home Video has announced that they have compiled a 'Essential Holiday Collection' for Blu-ray that they will make it to store shelves on October 28th. The set will include Blu-ray releases of 'The Polar Express', 'National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation', 'Elf', and 'A Christmas Story'.

Media Servers Adding Blu-ray Support

Blu-ray Release for Kung Fu Panda Revealed

DreamWorks has revealed that they will bring their CGI animated film 'Kung Fu Panda' starring Jack Black, to Blu-ray on November 11, day-and-date with the DVD release. Technical specs have yet to be announced at this time, but a top- quality video and audio presentation is pretty much expected.

The Terminator Series has become one of the most successful sci-fi film series ever. With three films in the bag, and a forth in production, it was almost inevitable that someone would try bringing the time-traveling death machine to network TV. Fortunately, the result was both entertaining and well received. For those of you who missed the show when it first ran, or fell in love with it and need to watch it again, Warner is today releasing 'Terminator - The Sarah Connor Chronicles: The Complete First Season' for Blu-ray.

Halloween Remake Gets Blu-ray Details

The Weinstein Company has announced the special features for the upcoming Blu-ray release of the 2007 remake of 'Halloween', due to hit store shelves on October 21st. The disc will feature the director's cut of the film which extends the run time by 11 minutes. As previously reported, the disc will also feature a new 4.5 hour documentary on the film.

Mitsubishi Preps Blu-ray HDTV Combo, Too

A few days after Funai announced they were planning to release a Blu-ray/HDTV combo, Mitsubishi showed off their upcoming combo called "REAL Blu-ray". The company has yet to manufacturer a Blu-ray player. No specs have been announced at this time, but representatives expect the set to go into production soon.

Firefly Announced for November Blu-ray Release

Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the complete sci-fi series 'Firefly' to Blu-ray on November 11th. The 14 episodes will be spread across three BD-50s utilizing 1.78:1 1080p video accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. The set will also feature exclusive material over the previous DVD release.

Anchor Bay Blu-ray Boxsets Revealed

In an early announcement to retailers, Anchor Bay Home Entertainment has revealed that they will bundle their Masters of Horror series into the 'Blu-ray Masters of Horror Bundle' on September 9th. Additionally, they will release the Amazon-exclusive 'Blu-ray Zombie Bundle' (which will feature 'Dawn of the Dead', 'Day of the Dead', and 'Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn') on the same day.

300 Gets Limited Collector's Treatment (Updated)

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring '300: Limited Collector's Edition' to Blu-ray sometime in 2009. Though no official specs have been released, it will likely be similar to the three disc DVD release which will feature all the extras from the previous two-disc DVD release plus a new documentary "To The Hot Gates: A Legend Retold" as well as a digital copy of the film.

Two Versions of Caspian Blu-ray

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has revealed that they will offer two versions of the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian', which is due on store shelves December 2nd, day-and-date with the DVD release. The standard version will be a two-disc release featuring 2.4:1 1080p AVC video accompanied by a 7.1 24-bit PCM soundtrack. The second version will be a three-disc release featuring a digital copy of the film.

The Polar Express Gets 3D Treatment for Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring 'The Polar Express Presented in 3-D' to Blu-ray on October 28th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Michael Myers' comedy 'The Love Guru' to Blu-ray on September 16th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented in 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. A digital copy of the film will be available on the second disc.

AC/DC: No Bull Coming to Blu-ray

Sony Music has announced that they are bringing the newly edited concert film 'AC/DC: No Bull (Director's Cut)' to Blu-ray on September 16th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No technical specs have been announced at this time, but the title will feature 20 tracks from a 1996 concert filmed in the Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas, Madrid, Spain.

Release Dates & Specs for First Wave of Criterion Blu-ray Discs

The Criterion Collection has posted details for their first five Blu-ray Disc titles. 'The Third Man' and 'The Man Who Fell to Earth' are set for release on November 18th, while three more titles - 'Bottle Rocket,' 'Chungking Express,' and the critically acclaimed 'The Last Emperor' - arrive one week later on the 25th. The films will be presented in their original (or director approved) aspect ratios in new high definition digital transfers, featuring lossless audio mixes. Each title will also contain a wealth of extra features.

Pineapple Express to Receive BD-Live Features

Though the film has just been release in US theaters, planning is already underway to add BD-Live features to the Blu-ray release of 'Pineapple Express'. In an interview with Home Media Magazine, star Seth Rogan commented on some features that might be part of the eventual high definition release.

The Incredible Hulk Gets BD-Live Features; Still No Date

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has revealed some of the special features that will accompany the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'The Incredible Hulk', though no street date has been set as of yet. The film will come in a collectible 3D packaging and feature BD-Live features including "My Chat" which will allow you to chat with friends while watching the film.

WALL-E Gets Blu-ray Date

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Pixar animated film 'WALL-E' to Blu-ray on November 18th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Little is know about this release except that it will be a two-disc set with BD-Live interactivity and a digital copy of the film via, what Disney is calling, "Disney File".
