Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

BD-Live Conference Next Week in San Fran

The Producers Guild of America has announced that they will hold a conference in San Fransisco, CA called "Blu-ray Gets Connected: Creative Possibilities for BD-Live". The event, which is being held at Pixar Animation Studios, will take place on October 15th from 7-9PM. It will focus on BD-Live production and feature many big name players from Hollywood.

Battlestar Galactica Coming to Blu-ray

Our friend Bill Hunt from The Digital Bits has the scoop that Universal Studios Home Entertainment has set plans in motion to bring the popular 'Battlestar Galactica' series to Blu-ray sometime next year. As the information is just coming in, there is no firm date and no technical specs or special features announced at this time.

Netflix Raises Rates for Blu-ray Purchases

In an email sent to subscribers yesterday, the popular web-based movie renter Netflix altered that they would be applying a one dollar surcharge to those members who rent Blu-ray titles beginning with the next billing cycle. Netflix had been floating the idea for many months, including increasing monthly fees to a select test group.

Third Annual High-Def Conference in November

Home Media Magazine and The Hollywood Reporter are proud to announce that they will hold the third annual High-Def Conference (HD-3) on November 11th in Los Angeles, CA. This year's conference will focus on the fourth quarter plans by both studios and player manufactures in order to ensure a "Blu Christmas".

In an early announcement to retailers, MGM Home Entertainment in conjunction with Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the 'Stargate - Ark of Truth' to Blu-ray on January 13th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented in 1.78:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Traitor; Surfer Dude Announced for Blu-ray

Anchor Bay Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Jeff Daniels and Don Cheadle film 'Traitor' to Blu-ray on December 19th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Additionally, they will bring the Matthew McConaughey film 'Surfer Dude' to Blu-ray on December 30th, also day-and-date with the DVD release.

Paramount Bringing Without A Paddle Sequel to Blu-ray

In an early announcement to retailers, Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the direct-to-video sequel 'Without a Paddle: Nature's Calling' to Blu-ray on January 13th, day-and-date with the DVD release. As this is not an official announcement, no technical specs or special features were released at this time.

Iron Man Destroys Blu-ray Retail Records

According to various retail sources, on average, 20% of all 'Iron Man' discs that were sold last week were on the Blu-ray format. For Internet-based stores, that percentage climbed to an astounding 50%. While final unit sales data has yet to be reported, it is expected that 'Iron Man' is the highest selling Blu-ray yet.

Their critically acclaimed releases for films such as 'Pirates of the Caribbean' and 'Ratatouille', supported by a North American mall tour, shows a deep dedication to the format. Today, they give Blu-ray fans one more thing to cheer about - Disney animation in high definition.

Blu-ray 2008: The Studio Report Card

As most Blu-ray fans known, not all studios are equal when it comes to Blu-ray releases. Some, like Sony Pictures, have consistently released outstanding Blu-ray offerings, while others, like MGM, have much room for improvement. Reviewer Kenneth Brown has written a Studio Report Card for Sound & Vision Magazine, and while his observations will not be surprising to any Blu-ray fan, it is interesting to see direct comparisons made between the studios.

Prince Caspian Announced for UK Release

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment UK has announced that they will bring 'The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian' to Blu-ray on November 17th in the UK, day-and-date with the DVD release. Similar to the US release, video will be presented in 1080p AVC accompanied by a 24-bit 7.1 PCM soundtrack.

Fearless Announced for Blu-ray Release

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announce that they will bring Jet Li's 'Fearless' to Blu-ray on December 9th. This title is the latest from the studio that was originally on the HD DVD format, and is now coming out for Blu-ray. Video will be presented in 1080p accompanied by a Mandarin 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack (an English dub will also be available) all on a BD-50.

The Lord of the Rings in 2009

I'm a little hesitant to post this, mostly because even the whisper of The One Ring coming to Blu-ray causes the most Fonz-esqe guy to geek out (maybe the Ring is real?), but according to material found in the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Poltergiest' (and other upcoming Warner Blu-ray titles), at least the first part of the Lord of the Rings will be coming to Blu-ray in 2009.

European Release Dates for Q1 2009

Now that we are in the full swing of Q4, movie studios are already starting to think about what they will release next year. This is also true for Europe, where they always seem to be a little more forthcoming about their future release schedules. What we found, was that Sony is going to be very aggressive with their catalog titles, and Warner is going to keep riding that billion dollar franchise featuring a bat.

Paramount Home Entertainment has revealed the specs for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Coach Carter', which is due to hit store shelves on December 16th. For this 2005 film starring Samuel L. Jackson, video will be presented in 1080p video, accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

Integra Releases First Blu-ray Player

Integra has announced that they have released their first Blu-ray player, the Integra DBS-6.9. This BonusView compatible player supports 1080p24 video playback, as well as bitstream of both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio sound formats via HDMI v1.3a output. The player will also include an SD card slot on the front panel for additional media support.

Zodiac Finally Announced for Blu-ray

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the David Fincher film 'Zodiac: Director's Cut' to Blu-ray on January 27th. As of right now, the specs match that of the previous HD DVD release (Dolby Digital Plus soundtrack), but we expect that to be corrected to be a Dolby TrueHD track shortly, similar to other Paramount Blu-ray titles.

Quo Vadis Hits Japan in November

Warner Home Video Japan has revealed through a retailer report that they will bring the 1951 classic 'Quo Vadis' to Blu-ray on November 19th in Japan. Additionally, they release 'Poltergeist' on the same day in its non-digibook form (for those who prefer to not buy those discs). Both discs are expected to be the same as their US releases.

Image Brings More to Blu-ray

In an early announcement to retailers, Image Entertainment has revealed that they will bring the 1976 John Carpenter film 'Assault on Precinct 13' for Blu-ray on December 2nd. Just announced by Image, the company will bring the comedy 'Ping Pong Playa' to Blu-ray on January 6th, while 'Jeff Dunham: Arguing with Myself' gets delayed until February 3rd.

Sony Pictures Blu-ray Club Announced

Beginning tomorrow, owners of Sony Pictures BD-Live Blu-ray titles will be able to register their discs online to receive "points" they can redeem for Sony products and prizes. Once the disc is registered with the program - which is called Sony Pictures Blu-ray Club - points will automatically be credited to the user's account and can be checked at any time on the Blu-ray Club website.

Sanyo Creates High Powered Blu-ray Laser

Sanyo Electric has developed a Blu-ray laser diode that can emit 450 milliwatts, which will allow for the burning of Blu-ray media at 12x speeds and at up to four layers (100GB). Sanyo made it clear, that while this laser has the ability to write to a four layer disc, the Blu-ray spec currently doesn't allows for such a disc, and that it would take many years before consumers would benefit fully from this technology.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment UK has announced that they will bring the Will Smith summer hit 'Hancock' to Blu-ray on December 1st in the UK, day-and-date with the DVD release. This two-disc set will feature both the theatrical and extended version of the film in 1080p AVC accompanied by a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

Blue Underground has announced that they will bring 'Dead and Buried' to Blu-ray on January 27th. This horror film comes from the creators of the popular sci-fi 'Alien', and even features many of the same actors. Video will be presented in 1.85:1 1080p accompanied by both 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio and 7.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtracks.

Live from Abbey Road Coming to Blu-ray

BCI Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Live from Abbey Road - The Best of Season 1' to Blu-ray on November 11th, day-and-date with the DVD release. This release combines the best moments from the first season of the critically acclaimed Sundance Channel show, with appearances from some of the top musicians in the world.
