Gennum is demonstrating their new active connect technology at CES this year, which will enable longer runs of HDMI cable without any loss in quality or introduction of signal noise. Companies such as Monster are then licensing this technology in order to provide consumers with high end connection products to meet their ever-growing home theater needs.
The company has transceivers for HDMI – Ethernet – HDMI as well as receivers for HDMI cables where a transmitter at the beginning of the HDMI cable is not required.
The receivers are very large, which negates the small connector design feature of the HDMI cable. However, there is also a plug on attachment available, and company reps expected the size to decrease as the technology matures. A number of manufacturers have had similar devices, but they usually support HDMI 1.1 at much lower bandwidths. Gennum's product is designed for HDMI 1.3 supporting deep color with speeds past 10Gb/s.
The picture below is demonstrating a 50 foot HDMI cable on the left without an active connect adapter while the Cable on the right is a 75 foot Monster cable with Active connect. Note the noise (white specks on the left hand screen). Please note the same scene was not being displayed on each monitor and the monitors were being fed from two separate Blu-ray players so this demonstration was not controlled
