Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

The Matrix and Amadeus Go DigiBook in Q1

Warner Home Video has revealed that they will bring 'The Matrix' and 'Amadeus: Director's Cut' to Blu-ray in the first quarter of next year. Both titles will receive digibook treatment, meaning they will come packaged with a hard cover book containing exclusive pictures and essays. Additionally, 'Amadeus' will come a CD sampler.

Mamma Mia! Coming to Blu-ray

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has revealed that they will bring the hit musical 'Mamma Mia!' to Blu-ray on December 16th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No technical specs have been revealed at this time, but you can expect the usual Universal treatment with 1080p video accompanied by a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

French Iron Man Release to Utilize BD Touch

Inside sources have alerted Blu-ray.com that the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Iron Man' in France will utilize NetBlender's BD Touch technology that allows your Blu-ray movie to interact with your iPhone and iPod Touch. The application, called "Remote Haxey", will allow users to download trailers, play a game that's integrated into the movie, and use your iPhone as a remote control, among other unrevealed features.

Universal Studios Announces Wanted for Blu-ray

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Timur Bekmambetov thriller 'Wanted' to Blu-ray on December 2nd, day-and-date with the DVD release. This two-disc set (the second disc is a digital copy of the film) will feature 2.35:1 1080p video accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Iron Man Smashes Blu-ray Sales Records

In an interview with Howard Stern yesterday, 'Iron Man' director Jon Favreau revealed that the Blu-ray release of his blockbuster hit has already broken sales records for the format. While final sales numbers won't be known until next Friday, its was widely expected that 'Iron Man' would be a huge success on the high definition format.

U-Tech Media Ready for Blu-ray Disc Production

According to industry sources in Taiwan, U-Tech Media - the largest producer of pre-recorded optical disc in Taiwan - has completed installation of their first Blu-ray Disc production line and is ready to accept orders for volume production of Blu-ray movies. Pilot runs in July and August were successful, followed by an equally successful trial production in September.

Get Smart Blu-ray Specs Revealed

Warner Home Video has announced the technical specs and special features for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Get Smart', which is due to hit store shelves on November 4th, day-and-date with the DVD release. The three-disc set will feature 1.85:1 1080 VC-1 video accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack.

Fox Brings The Colour of Magic to the UK

Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring Terry Pratchett's 'The Colour of Magic' to Blu-ray on November 3rd in the UK, day-and-date with the DVD release. Technical specs have yet to be released for this title, but you can expect the usual 1080p AVC and DTS-HD Master Audio presentation from Fox.

Donkey Punch Blu-ray for UK

Optimum Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the thriller 'Donkey Punch' to Blu-ray on November 10th in the UK, day-and-date with the DVD release. Technical specs have yet to be released for this title, though previous Optimum releases have made use of the AVC video codec.

CEATEC 2008: Sharp Blu-ray

Sharp was in attendance at CEATEC 2008 with their own suite of new Blu-ray recorder / player / burners. Sharp follows a similar pattern set by other consumer electronics companies present at the show in introducing a wide range of products that feature a range of price points determined by the sizes of the internal hard drive included in the unit as well as the presence of Blu-ray burning capabilities.

CEATEC 2008: Panasonic Blu-ray

Not to be left out of the huge push of new Blu-ray burners and recorders debuting at CEATEC, Panasonic debuted five new Blu-ray players / recorders / burners for the Japanese market. The BW930 with 1 terabyte of storage, the BW830 with 500 GB, BW730 with 320 GB, BR630V with 320 GB, a VHS recorder and no Blu-ray burning capabilities and the more basic BR500 with 250GB of storage and no burning ability are all set to debut in Japanese stores this fall.

Fox Reveals Two Holiday Titles for December

In an early announcement to retailers, Fox Home Entertainment has revealed that they will bring the holiday films 'Home Alone' and 'Jingle All the Way' to Blu-ray on December 2nd. As this not an official announcement by the studio, technical specs and special features have not been announced at this time. We expect to learn more about these two titles shortly.

Fox Announces The Day the Earth Stood Still (UPDATED)

Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the 1951 classic film 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' to Blu-ray as a Special Edition on December 2nd, day-and-date with the DVD release. Coming on a BD-50, video will be presented in 1.33:1 1080p AVC accompanied a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

This is Spinal Tap Heading to Blu-ray

In an early announcement to retailers, MGM Home Entertainment in conjunction with Fox Home Entertainment have announced that they will bring 'This is Spinal Tap' to Blu-ray on January 20th. This now legendary comedy from director Rob Reiner is a mocumentary of the rock band Spinal Tap.

Sony Drops Prices for Blu-ray Players

Sony Electronics has dropped the price of their new BD-Live (Profile v2.0) Blu-ray Disc player - the Sony BDP-S350 - to $299, and have lowered the price of the upcoming Sony BDP-S550 BD-Live Blu-ray Disc player to $399. These reductions represent a discount of $100 off the previous MSRP, and match those reductions set in place by Panasonic a couple weeks ago.

CEATEC 2008: Mitsubishi Blu-ray Recorders

Today at CEATEC Japan, Mitsubishi announced two all-new Blu-ray players featuring Digital Video Recording capabilities. These products are intended for the Japanese market where DVR recording capabilities are considered essential along with Blu-ray playback.

Sony came out in force today at CEATEC by debuting a large array of new Blu-ray products. Most of what was showcased is intended for the Japanese market and falls into the category of Blu-ray players featuring hard drives as well as Blu-ray burning capabilities. In addition, Sony showcased their new signature BDP-S5000ES high end Blu-ray player.

Today marks the beginning of the fourth quarter in retail sales, a time where manufacturers, content providers, and retailers join together in order to provide the largest variety of titles and hardware in anticipation of the holiday gift-buying season. How appropriate it is that the today also marks the Blu-ray release one of the biggest titles this summer - 'Iron Man' - to launch it off.

Domino Coming to Blu-ray

New Line Entertainment in conjunction with Warner Home Video have announced that they will bring the Keira Knightley film 'Domino' to Blu-ray on January 20th. This release is currently planned to be distributed on a BD-25, and will feature 1080p VC-1 video. Audio specs have not been announced at this time.

Blu-Con Brings the Industry Together this December

Digital Entertainment Group (DEG), Variety, Video Business and Content Agenda are jointly sponsoring Blu-Con 1.0, a day-long Blu-ray developers summit which will be held on December 8th at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The event will provide a platform for industry representatives to discuss topics including BD-Live, Digital Copy, Blu-ray and music.

Music Legends to Release Blu-ray Titles

A&E Home Video has announced that they will release 'Paul McCartney: The Space Within US' for Blu-ray on November 18th. Additionally, ShoutFactory has announced that they will release Hall & Oates Live at the Troubador' a week later on November 25th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No technical specs or special features have been announced for either title at this time.

Thompson Establishes First BDA-Approved US Testing Center

Technicolor, a business group of Thompson, has announced that its Burbank, CA Blu-ray Disc testing center is the first to be approved by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) in the US. With their extensive knowledge of the BD-Java software and experience with producing Blu-ray discs, they are in an excellent position to process discs through a variety of tests to ensure standards compatibility, format integrity, and advise content producers on how to improve the disc behavior

CEATEC 2008: Panasonic 3D Blu-ray

Today at CEATEC Japan, Panasonic unveiled the first public demonstrations of their groundbreaking 3D Blu-ray technology. Hollywood has had a long-standing flirtation with 3D technology, but previous attempts at finding an audience for 3D have had mixed results. Viewers have often complained of 3D's reliance on colored glasses that gave images a strange and disjointed appearance as well as causing headaches and motion sickness. Now, 3D technology has evolved to the point where glasses using different colored lenses are no longer necessary. Today's 3D utilizes polarized lens technology that takes advantage of advances in liquid crystal technology allowing clear lenses and fewer unpleasant side effects.

CEATEC 2008: Sigma Designs

Today while attending CEATEC Japan, I had the opportunity to stop by the Sigma Designs suite at the beautiful Manhattan Hotel located just outside of Tokyo. Heading up product demonstrations at CEATEC, is Blu-ray.com's renowned insider Keith Jack, Director of Product Marketing for Sigma Designs. Mr. Jack was kind enough to walk me through a few product demonstrations of Sigma's award winning SoC (System-on-a-Chip) products.

Stargate - The Ark of Truth Rumored for January

According to the website TVShowsonDVD, MGM Home Entertainment is planning to release the direct-to-video series follow-on 'Stargate - The Ark of Truth' to Blu-ray this January. The already released 'Stargate - Continuum' takes place after 'Ark', so many Stargate fans are hopeful that they will see this title come out soon.

Warner UK Line-Up Includes First Four Batman Films

Warner Home Video UK has revealed their Blu-ray line-up for the remainder of the year in the UK. Besides receiving many titles already available in the US, they are also planning on releasing some films which have yet to see Blu-ray release. This includes the first four Batman films - 'Batman', 'Batman Returns', 'Batman Forever', and 'Batman & Robin' - which are all scheduled to be released on December 29th.

Speed Racer Comes to the UK

Warner Home Video UK has announced that they will bring 'Speed Racer' to Blu-ray in the UK on November 10th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No technical specs or special features have been announced for this title at this time, though it is likely that this release will mirror the US in the technical area, but only be a one disc release (vice the three-discs for the US).
