Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Vote for the Blu-ray Deal of the Day at Amazon

Amazon has summoned its Blu-ray customers to vote for the title that will be featured in one of the Deals of the Day of next week (which has been proclaimed "high-def week"). The etailer has repeatedly stated its belief in Blu-ray leadership and invested resources in creating a "great destination for learning about, discovering and buying Blu-ray." This latest initiative is part of that approach.

U-Tech Media Gets Certification to Replicate 50GB Blu-ray Discs

U-Tech Media, a Taiwan-based manufacturer of pre-recorded media, announced that it has obtained certification from the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) for the production of 50GB (double-layer) BD-ROM discs. This makes U-Tech the first replicator in Asia outside of Japan to receive that certification. The company expects to begin shipments in the third quarter of 2009.

Canadian Get DVD Trade-in Offer from Fox/MGM

HMV stores across Canada began a promotion over the weekend, which runs for the entire month of May, where consumers who bring in used DVDs will receive a $7 credit towards the purchase of special marked Fox and MGM Blu-ray discs. Originally conceived the promote the responsible recycling of used DVDs, the program has since morphed to provided used DVDs to children's hospitals and libraries and out of landfills.

The Unborn Announced for Blu-ray Release

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the horror flick 'The Unborn' to Blu-ray on July 7th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Directed and writen by famed writer David S. Goyer, the film will be presented in both its theatrical and unrated versions on a BD-50 with 1.85:1 1080p VC-1 video accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Crouching Tiger Coming to Blu-ray as Part of Box Set

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment have announced that they will bring the 'Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Curse of the Golden Flower, and House of Flying Daggers Trilogy' to Blu-ray on July 14th, marking the first time 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' has been made available in high definition. Video will be presented in 1080p AVC and MPEG-2 accompanied by soundtracks in both 5.1 PCM and 5.1 Dolby TrueHD audio formats.

I Still Know What You Did Last Summer Re-Announced

Sony Picture Home Entertainment has re-announced that they will bring the teen horror sequel 'I Still Know What You Did Last Summer' to Blu-ray on July 14th. Originally announced for a July 2008 release, it was eventually delayed. Video will be presented in 2.40:1 1080p and accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

Fullmetal Alchemist Movie Coming to Blu-ray

In an early announcement to retailers, FUNimation has revealed that it will bring 'Fullmetal Alchemist the Movie: Conqueror of Shamballa' to Blu-ray on September 29. No technical specs have been announced at this time, though you can expect to see an AVC 1080p video presentation accompanied by Japanese and English Dolby TrueHD soundtracks, with English subtitles.

Vizio Blu-ray Player Delayed to August

During last January's CES fair, value electronics maker Vizio announced the launch of its first Blu-ray player, the VBR100, a BD-Live model with a list price under $200. An availability date of April was given. However, the player has not launched yet, and the company is now targeting an August release date. No reasons for the delay have been disclosed.

Tokyo Shock Brings Death Trance to Blu-ray with Optional DVD

In an early announcement to retailers, Tokyo Shock (Media Blasters) has revealed that it will release the Japanese action/fantasy movie 'Death Trance' on Blu-ray on July 14. No specs have been announced at this time, but it is worth noting that the studio is releasing two editions: a single-disc edition and a two-disc set that will also contain the DVD of the movie.

Tokyo! Announced for Blu-ray

Independent studio Liberation Entertainment enters the Blu-ray arena with its announcement of Tokyo!, a three-segment film that looks at life in Japan's capital, directed by three non-Japanese filmmakers. The film will street on Blu-ray on June 30, day-and-date with the DVD. No specs have been announced at this time.

Star Trek Blu-ray Offers BD-Live Reports from FEDCON

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that owners of 'Star Trek: The Original Series: Season 1' will be able to receive daily reports from FEDCON - Europe's largest STAR TREK convention - via the disc's BD-Live interface. CBS Home Entertainment for the first time ever will have production teams onsite at FEDCON to film behind-the-scenes footage, talent interviews and more directly from the convention floor.

Jonas Brothers in 3D on Blu-ray

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'The Jonas Brothers: The 3-D Concert Experience' to Blu-ray on June 30th. A DVD release is also planned, but will not feature the film in 3D. For a limited time, this release will also include a copy of the DVD as well as a digital copy of the film. The Blu-ray will feature both the 3D and standard versions of the film, in their extended editions, along with four 3D glasses.

Mr. Troop Mom Announced for Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the George Lopez direct-to-video family comedy 'Mr. Troop Mom' to Blu-ray on June 23rd, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented in 1080p VC-1 accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. A DVD and digital copy of the film will also be provided with this Blu-ray release.

Pioneer BDP-09FD Blu-ray Player Gets BD-Live Support

When Pioneer Electronics announced this "reference" Blu-ray player, one of its major features was BD-Live. However, when the BDP-09FD shipped, BD-Live wasn't operational yet, pending a firmware update. Now firmware version 2.46, which makes the player capable of accessing online content, has finally come online.

In an early announcement to retailers, Starz/Anchor Bay has announced that it will bring 'Crash: The Complete First Season' to Blu-ray on August 25, day-and-date with the DVD release. Final audio and video specs and bonus features content are not known at this time, but they will be officially announced shortly.

Dragon's Lair 2 Announced for Blu-ray

Digital Leisure has announced that they will bring the sequel 'Dragon's Lair II: Time Warp' to Blu-ray on June 2nd. You play the role of Dirk the Daring as he tries to save Princess Daphne once again. The legendary game (originally released on LaserDisc) has been mediculously restored via a frame-by-frame restoration and remastered in stunning 1080p high definition video. The soundtrack has also been remixed into a new 5.1 mix.

Optimum Home Entertainment has announced that they will release both parts of Steven Soderbergh's 'Che' for Blu-ray in the UK on June 29, day-and-date with the DVD release, separately or in a two-disc box set. No technical specs have been announced at this time, though you can expect to see an AVC video encode accompanied by a DTS-HD Master Audio Spanish-language track and English subtitles. This title hasn't been released or announced in the USA.

Oppo BDP-83 Blu-ray Player Launches, by Invitation Only

One of the most anticipated hardware releases in Blu-ray history is finally going to materialize. After a protracted beta-testing and early-adopter sale program, Oppo Digital is releasing the BDP-83 to the general public – or at least, those in the public that had emailed the company showing interest in the player. The first units will ship in May.

New BD-Live Application Turns Blu-ray Players into VOD Boxes

Enteractive, a German Blu-ray production studio, demonstrated for the first time at the Media-Tech fair in Frankfurt its video-on-demand service 'Videociety' – a digital pay-per-view video delivery service that, through novel use of Java software, lets users rent movies via any Blu-ray player, provided it supports BD-Live. Official product launch is expected for later in the year.

Talento de Barrio Gets Top Latino Blu-ray Award

Maya Home Entertainment's Blu-ray release of 'Talento de Barrio' won for Best Blu-ray Disc at the fifth annual Latino DVD Awards yesterday, held at the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, CA. Similar to other awards hosted by Home Media Magazine, the winners are voted on by a panel of judges comprised of top DVD critics, journalists and consumers.

Warner: Free Digital Copies for Blu-ray; Pay-to-Play with DVD

Warner Home Video has revealed that, starting with the upcoming release of the 2009 remake of 'Friday the 13th', they will begin charging DVD customers $1.99 to gain access to a digital copy of the film, while providing them free as part of the Blu-ray release. While this has no impact on Warner's current Blu-ray standards, it does narrow the price difference between the two formats.

iTunes Beta Includes Mention of Blu-ray

Apple has released the latest beta version of the popular music manager program iTunes to developers, and some attentive reviewers caught an interesting revision to the Gracenotes legal notice. The updated copyright info now makes reference to data supplied for Blu-ray discs, indicating that the popular computer and software manufacturer may begin supporting the high definition format.

Paramount Gains Access to BD+ Tools

Macrovision has announced that Paramount Home Entertainment has agreed to license a number of their content protection products, including ACP and RipGuard. The new agreed also allows Paramount to utilize the Blu-ray specific anti-piracy program BD+, a program which encrypts data on the disc using an updatable key.

First DVD-Compatible Blu-ray Replication Line

Hong Kong-based company Anwell has recently made strides to gain market share in the Blu-ray replication manufacturing sector. As part of that initiative, they have developed the Smart-BD Combo system, a optical disc replicator that supports both Blu-ray and legacy DVD. Details of this new replication line were given at the Media-Tech Europe 2009 event in Frankfurt.

Joe Dante, Amblin Working on Gremlins Remasters

The lovable fluffy creatures that turn into evil fanged monsters if fed after midnight were supposed to see a Blu-ray release in 2007 and then in 2008, only to be unceremoniously canceled. Now director Joe Dante, while on the set of 'The Hole,' has confirmed that he and production company Amblin Entertainment are working on the remasters of both movies, and that they will be released on Blu-ray, although they will miss the intended summer date.

DTS Announces New Blu-ray Audio Production Tools

During the latest NAB professional show, which took place in Las Vegas from April 18 to April 23, DTS, Inc. announced new Blu-ray Disc audio tools for the professional and prosumer markets. Developed in cooperation with Minnetonka Audio Software, they introduced version 2.0 of its DTS-HD Master Audio Suite and SurCode's DTS-HD solutions for Apple Final Cut Studio and Logic Studio users.
