Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Retailers Seek Blu-ray Exclusives

In an effort to differentiate themselves from the competition and attract customers, retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy and Hollywood Video are increasingly pursuing exclusivity deals with movie studios. Titles such as 'Twilight' have received timed exclusives with retailers Best Buy and Target already having the Blu-ray available earlier this year (it will be available everywhere on May 5th), while others - like the recent Blu-ray release of 'Goldfinger' - receive special Steelbook editions or bonus content specific to the retailer.

TMNT Blu-ray Collection Officially Announced

Warner Home Video has officially announced that they will bring the 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Film Collection' to Blu-ray on August 4th, day-and-date with the DVD release. This four-disc set will feature all four films from the series - 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles', 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze', 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: Turtles in Time', and 'TMNT'.

Sony Announces Waltz with Bashir Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Oscar-nominated film 'Waltz with Bashir' to Blu-ray on June 23rd, day-and-date with the DVD release. Based on actual events witnessed by writer/director Ari Folman, video will be presented in 1.78:1 1080p AVC accompanied by both English and Hebrew 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtracks.

The Deep Announced for Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the film 'The Deep' to Blu-ray on July 7th. The film, which stars Jacqueline Bisset and Nick Nolte, is based on a book by Jaws author Peter Benchley. Video will be presented in 2.35:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

Children of the Corn and M*A*S*H See Delays

Anchor Bay Home Entertainment has just send not that their upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Children of the Corn' has been delayed until August 25th. Originally scheduled for July 28th, it doesn't appear that any of the technical specs or special features have changed with the date shift. No reason was provided for the delay, but it may have to do with a delay in the release of the upcoming TV remake.

Fire and Ice Announced for Blu-ray

Blue Underground has announced that they with bring the 1983 animated film 'Fire and Ice' to Blu-ray on August 25th. Directed by Ralph Bakshi ('Fritz the Cat', 'Wizards', and the animated 'The Lord of the Rings') and featuring animator Frank Frazetta ('Conan the Barbarian' and 'Vampirella'), the film will be presented in 1080p video accompanied by both 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio and 7.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtracks.

The Discovery Channel in conjunction with Image Entertainment have announced that they will bring 'Shark Week: The Greatest Bites Collection' to Blu-ray on July 14th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented in high definition, accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Return to Forever Comes to Blu-ray

Eagle Rock Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Return to Forever: Returns - Live at Montreux' to Blu-ray on May 12th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Recorded in 2008, this disc captures one night from the jazz fusion band's remarkable reunion tour - the first one in 25 years. Technical specs have not been announced at this time.

The British Film Institute (BFI) has announced that they will bring 'The Magick Lantern' to Blu-ray on May 25th, day-and-date with the DVD release. This collection of ten classic Kenneth Anger experimental short films will be presented in 1080p AVC high definition video. No audio spec has been announced at this time.

Battlestar Galactica Seasons Announced for Blu-ray

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series' to Blu-ray on July 28th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Every episode will be include in this twenty-disc set (all of which are BD-50s), and will be presented in 1080p VC-1 accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Warner Announces Red2Blu Program

Warner Home Video through their WBShop.com website has announced that they will now allow HD DVD owners to exchange their old Warner HD DVDs for the Blu-ray version. This may be the last chance for owners of the now defunct high definition format to salvage some worth from their film libraries before sacrificing the discs to the dumpster gods.

Elsewhere, Baby on Board Coming to Blu-ray

E1 Films has announced that they will bring the thriller 'Elsewhere', featuring Anna Kendrick from 'Twilight', to Blu-ray on June 2nd, day-and-date with the DVD release. A week later, on June 9th, they will bring the Heather Graham and Jerry O'Connell film 'Baby on Board' to Blu-ray, day-and-date with the DVD release. For both releases video will be presented in high definition accompanied by either a DTS or Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack.

At the NABShow this year, which starts tomorrow in Las Vegas, one thing is going to be very clear - 3D Blu-ray is no closer to being a reality than it was last year. Unfortunately, the problem - once again - comes down to too many companies wanting to use their own standard for 3D home presentation. For DVD, it took so long to decide on a single 3D format - until January of this year - that no one seems to care. Unfortunately, 3D on Blu-ray may be positioning itself for a similar failure.

Blu-ray Players to Hit $99 This Holiday Season

As previously reported, the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) has recently brought the high definition format to China. In order to accomplish this, they had to not only provide the technology to create Blu-ray Discs and players to Chinese manufacturers, but also create a licensing format which would lower costs and streamline the production process. One of the advantages to the rest of the Blu-ray buying world, commented Mark Leathan, Marketing Director at Samsung, was that we will soon see the "entry of the Chinese manufacturers into the Blu ray market that we will have a $99 Blu ray player."

Criterion Announces For All Mankind and Repulsion

Criterion has announced that they will bring the NASA Apollo Missions documentary 'For All Mankind' to Blu-ray on July 14th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Two weeks later, on July 28th, they will bring Roman Polanski's horror film 'Repulsion' to Blu-ray, day-and-date with the DVD release. Both films will be presented in their original aspect ratio via a 1080p AVC transfer, with 'For All Mankind' receiving a newly created 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack and 'Repulsion' being presented in its original PCM 1.0 soundtrack.

12M Blu-ray Players to Ship This Year

According to a new quarterly report by Futursource Consulting, the research company expects global shipments of Blu-ray Disc players to reach nearly 12 million units this year. In the fourth quarter of 2008, 3 million units were shipped globally, and represented nearly 50% of all Blu-ray Disc player shipments for the year. This year, the company is predicting as much as 6 million Blu-ray Disc players will be shipped globally during the fourth quarter of this year.

Blu-ray Q1 Sales Double from Last Year

According to new research conducted by Adams Media Research, Blu-ray sales during the first quarter of the year were approximately 9 Million units, double what they were during the same period last year. The huge increase in sales can most likely be attributed to an explosion in Blu-ray enable homes, which are now estimated to be 10.5 Million.

Lord of the Rings Pre-order Now Available!

In an early announcement to retailers, New Line Home Entertainment in conjunction with Warner Home Video have revealed the cover art for 'The Lord of the Rings Trilogy' Blu-ray and Amazon has begun taking pre-orders. The release currently does not have a release date, but it is expected to be released later this year - most likely during the holiday season.

Iron Maiden Documentary Coming in May

A new documentary called 'Iron Maiden: Flight 666' will be released on Blu-ray May 25th, day-and-date with the DVD release. The film will document the legendary heavy metal band's "Somewhere Back In Time" 2008 world tour. The second disc will feature 16 different songs from the tour. No other details have been announced at this time.

It was no surprise when he was picked to play Jimmy "B-Rabbit" Smith in '8 Mile', a story based heavily on his past and humble beginnings. What was surprising, however, was that his performance would be so strong that whispers of Oscar-nominations began to swirl among movie-goers and film reviewers alike.
