Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

BD Sales Information for Week Ending May 24 (Updated)

According to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert, 'Valkyrie' was the top-selling title on Blu-ray in the US for the week ended May 24. Second place was for 'Taken', the top-selling title the week before. 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop', despite winning easily on the overall DVD/Blu-ray charts, only managed third place in Blu-ray, outsold by 'Valkyrie' by nearly 2 to 1. 'My Bloody Valentine' got number 4.

No Face of the Enemy in Battlestar Galactica?

When we listed the special features for the upcoming 'Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series' Blu-ray set, some forum members pointed out that the extras list made no mention of 'The Face of the Enemy'. Indeed, it seems that this series of ten webisodes will be absent from the Blu-ray set.

Fringe Season One Comes to Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring J.J. Abrams' 'Fringe: The Complete First Season' to Blu-ray on September 8th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Technical specs have not been announced at this time, you you can expect to see a 1080p VC-1 video presentation for all 20 episodes of the premiere season.

Amazon Adds DVD/Blu-ray Trade-in Program

Amazon has launched a DVD/Blu-ray Trade-in Program which allows customers to send in their used Blu-ray and DVD titles for Amazon.com Gift Cards. Similar to their existing Video Game Trade-in Program, you simply select the disc you want to trade-in, use the pre-paid shipping label to send it to Amazon, and then you'll have the Amazon Gift Card deposited to your account upon their receipt.

Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead on Blu-ray Soon

BBC America today announced the acquisition of five new Doctor Who specials, the first of which, 'Planet of the Dead', will have its broadcast premiere in the US in July. Shortly thereafter, it will be released on Blu-ray. At the time of writing, no specific release date or edition details have been divulged.

New Features Come to HDMI v1.4

HDMI Licensing, LLC has announced new features that will be included in the upcoming specs for HDMI v1.4, some of which directly relate to Blu-ray playback. One of the biggest additions is an Ethernet channel that will allow two-way Ethernet communication at speeds up to 100Mb/s over an HDMI connection.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has officially announced and detailed the upcoming release of 'The Office: Season 5', which -in a first for this series- is due to hit store shelves on Blu-ray on September 8, day-and-date with the DVD release. The full season will come in four BD50 discs, with a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has detailed the technical specs and special features for the three-movie pack "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon / Curse of the Golden Flower / House of Flying Daggers Trilogy", which will be released on Blu-ray on July 14. Details for the two latter titles are identical to their previous separate releases.

Marvell and Videon Central Announce Blu-ray Platform

Marvell and Video Central have announced that they will be collaborating on a new turnkey Blu-ray platform aimed at the high-end home theater market. The platform, which is BD-Live compatible, will utilize the Marvell 88DE2750 digital video format converter with second-generation Qdeo processing along with Videon Central's small form factor Blu-ray and DVD decoder board and industry proven middleware stack.

Updated Adventureland Blu-ray Specs

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has sent over finalized specs for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Adventureland', which is due to hit store shelves on August 25th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented in 1.85:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a 24-bit Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

Pete Docter Discusses Up Blu-ray

Just before the opening of Pixar's latest film, 'Up', director Pete Docter has mentioned some content that will appear in the Blu-ray, even though that is months away. The BD will include a documentary of the scouting trip the filmmakers took to South America, as well as the now-familiar Cine-Explore feature from Disney discs.

My Bloody Valentine Tops Canadian Sales Chart

Blockbuster Video Canada has released their Top Blu-ray Disc Sales for the week ending May 24th, and Lionsgate's three dimensional horror film 'My Blood Valentine 3D' scored the top spot. Coming in second and third was Tom Cruise's 'Valkyrie' and the Kevin James comedy 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop', which both earned top spots on Roger's Video's rental list.

MGM Gives Blu-ray the Chills in September

In an early announcement to retailers, it has been revealed that MGM Home Entertainment will release a set of highly-appreciated horror movies on September 15: 'Child's Play', 'Misery', and 'The Hannibal Lecter Anthology', which will include 'Manhunter', 'The Silence of the Lambs' and 'Hannibal'. No spec information is available at this time.

Girl Next Door, High Crimes Coming Up on Blu

In an early announcement to retailers, it has been revealed that 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment will release two catalog movies on Blu-ray on September 1: the teen film 'The Girl Next Door', starring Elisha Cuthbert, and the courtroom thriller 'High Crimes', starring Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd.

Today is proving to be a good day for fans of TV shows on Blu-ray. Now it is the turn for 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment to bring the first season of procedural 'Lie to Me' to Blu-ray on August 25, day-and-date with the DVD. As usual for the studio, video is 1080p AVC and audio is DTS-HD Master Audio.

Heroes Season 3 Blu-ray in September

Universal Studios Home Entertainment is releasing the third season of 'Heroes' on Blu-ray on September 1, day-and-date with the DVD release, including "Volume 3: Villains" and "Volume 4: Fugitives". As with previous seasons of the series, video will be 1.78:1 1080p accompanied by a DTS-HD Master Audio track. It will come in five BD50 discs.

Potter Box Set Sees Reissue in UK; Contest

Warner Home Video has revealed that they will reissue the 'Harry Potter Years 1-5 Box Set' on June 15th in the UK, day-and-date with the DVD reissue. No known technical or special features appear to be changing with the reissue, though Warner will insert a token in one of the sets that will give one lucky winner a week on the set of the seventh and final Potter film 'Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows'.

Alien Quadrilogy Blu-ray in Fox Flyer

French buyers of a recently released James Bond Blu-ray box set were surprised to find inside the box a flyer with upcoming Fox titles that included a never-seen- before picture of an 'Alien Quadrilogy' Blu-ray box set with the caption "coming soon". No more information is available, but such confirmation is definitely good news.

European Replicators Form BD Committee

The MEDIA-TECH Association (MTA) has formed an executive committee of the main independent replicators with a European presence. The committee's initial mission will be to work with Sony DADC and the relevant licensing bodies and tackle the major issues for independent replicators and service providers.

HDTV Ownership Jumps 73%, Fuels BD Growth

High-definition television ownership in the US jumped 73% in the past year (to about a third, up from 19.3% a year earlier), due to falling prices and the upcoming switch to all-digital broadcasts. The leap also fueled growth in spending on Blu-ray players and software, Nielsen reported last week.

High-End Blu-ray Player from Germany

T+A Elektroakustik, a German manufacturer of high-end consumer electronics, enters the Blu-ray sector with the launch of the "no-compromise" flagship model BD 1260 R. Availability is expected during 2009. The price is not fixed yet, but is expected to be a hefty €4,000 - €5,000, in line with competitors Marantz UD9004 and Denon DVD-A1UD.

Ghostbusters Promotion Launches, Including BD Premiere

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has launched an all-out promotional campaign for the Blu-ray release of 'Ghostbusters', due out on June 16. The campaign includes a Blu-ray premiere screening, an invitation to submit BD-Live content, a sweepstake for tickets for the upcoming Comic-Con convention, and a printable discount coupon.

Underworld Tops UK BD Weekly Sales Chart

During the week of May 18-May 24, 'Underworld: Rise of the Lycans' was the top selling title on Blu-ray in the United Kingdom, followed by 'Defiance', another new release (which streeted in the UK two weeks ahead of the US). 'Frost/Nixon' got to number 6, while 'Bride Wars' failed to make the top 10.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced that it will release 'Dragonball Evolution: Z Edition' on Blu-ray on July 28, day-and-date with the DVD. This live-action adaptation of the popular manga and anime franchise will be presented in 1080p 2.35:1 AVC accompanied by a DTS-HD Master Audio track.

Inside Man Audio Issue Corrected

As we reported last week, Universal Studios Home Entertainment recently identified an audio issue on the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Inside Man'. The studio took immediate steps to resolve the issue. In order to ensure the highest quality outcome, the formal release date, originally slated for May 26th, has officially been moved to June 2nd. Our review team has received the new pressing and verified that the audio issue has been corrected.

Original Inglorious Bastards and More BDs from Severin

Severin Films, the self-proclaimed 'Criterion of Smut', are soon entering the Blu-ray arena. True to form, the studio has announced two war movies for July 28: 'Eagles Over London' and the macaroni-combat classic 'The Inglorious Bastards', which will be followed in August 25 by the 1980s high-school sex comedy 'Screwballs'.

Icon Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon' to Blu-ray on July 13th in the UK, day-and-date with the DVD release. No technical specs have been announced at this time, though we do know that the release will include a making-of featurette, cast interviews, and trailers.

Father's Day may still be a few weeks away, but that hasn't stopped studios from flooding the market with male targeted films. Universal is taking their turn today, releasing four catalog titles that are sure to appeal to a good number of high definition fathers out there, including 'Children of Men', 'Cinderella Man', 'Field of Dreams', and 'Seabiscuit'.
