Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Disney Re-releasing Cars Blu-ray as Combo Gift Set

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced that they will re-release the Pixar animated film 'Cars' as a limited edition gift set on November 10th, day-and-date with the Blu-ray releases of 'Up' and 'Monster's Inc.'. When released, 'Cars: Ultimate Cars Gift Set' will feature a Disney Combo Blu-ray release, which includes a DVD copy of the film, along with two die-cast models of Lightning McQueen and Mater.

Exorcist Blu-ray Coming in 2010 with Both Cuts

Home Media Magazine publisher and editorial director, T.K. Arnold, has revealed in his blog that William Friedkin's 'The Exorcist' will be released on Blu-ray "in time for Halloween 2010". This edition will feature a new restoration, including both the 1973 theatrical version and the "version you've never seen" from 2000.

Galaxy Quest Blu-ray for November

Tying in with the more serious science fiction of 'Star Trek', Paramount Home Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray release of the Trek spoof 'Galaxy Quest', starring Tim Allen and Sigourney Weaver, for November 17. The bonus features list reproduces that of the Deluxe DVD edition released in May, plus a new feature called "Galactopedia".

It's a Wonderful Life Blu-ray Announced

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray release of Frank Capra's classic 'It's a Wonderful Life' for November 3. This edition will include both the black-and-white and colorized versions of the movie. Bonus features consist of a making-of documentary, and the theatrical trailer in high definition.

Chasing Amy Blu-ray Detailed

We have now the full details for the Blu-ray edition of Kevin Smith's 'Chasing Amy', which will hit store shelves on November 17. The movie will be presented in 1.85:1 1080p, accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. As already reported, the BD will contain a lot of new bonus content previously unavailable on disc.

Tarantino Q&A Masterclass on Facebook

Moon Announced in the UK

The UK branch of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced and detailed the Blu-ray release of the science-fiction thriller 'Moon', that will hit store shelves on November 16, day-and-date with the DVD. This "hard" sci-fi movie, starring Sam Rockwell, premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and received very positive reviews, but didn't have a wide release in the US.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray release of James Toback's 1997 comedy 'Two Girls and a Guy' (starring Robert Downey Jr., Natasha Gregson Wagner and Heather Graham) for November 3. The Blu-ray will include both the R-rated theatrical version and an NC-17 version, accessible via seamless branching.

Angels & Demons Gets Detailed in the UK

The UK branch of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed the edition details and special features of 'Angels & Demons', which will be released on Blu-ray on September 14, day-and-date with the DVD (as of today, the movie still hasn't got a release date in the US). Both the theatrical and extended cuts will be included, and in keeping with Sony's new policy, the main audio track will be in DTS-HD Master Audio.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced that it will release Cameron Crowe's teen romantic comedy 'Say Anything...' on Blu-ray on November 3. This 20th anniversary edition BD carries over all of the bonus materials of the previous DVD edition and adds a trivia track and three featurettes.

Slim PS3 Much Quieter than Original with BD (Update)

According to early tests, the PS3 generates significantly less noise than the original console when it's operating; not only with games, but also when playing Blu-ray movies. Engadget measured the sound pressure levels of a Slim console and an original one, running the same disc, and got levels of 60 dB for the Slim and 70 dB for the original. Having 10 dBs less is usually perceived to be "half as loud".

Panasonic and James Cameron Join Forces for 3-D

Panasonic Corp. has signed on James Cameron and his upcoming film, 'Avatar', in an advertising blitz for its TVs equipped with 3-D technology. Panasonic is planning to start selling 3-D TVs in 2010, while the Blu-ray Disc Association is hard at work hammering out a final specification for 3-D, which might be adopted as early as late this year.

Slim PS3 Bitstreams Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD

Without any fanfare or even a passing mention in its official announcement, the upcoming PS3 Slim is getting an additional feature, one long requested by those who use the console as a Blu-ray player: it will be capable of bitstreaming DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD to a compatible receiver for it to decode those advanced audio signals.

New Line Home Entertainment in conjunction with Warner Home Video have announced that the technical specs and special features for the upcoming Blu-ray release of Jim Carrey's 'Number 23', which is scheduled to hit store shelves on October 6th. The disc will feature both the theatrical and extended cuts of the film in 2.40:1 1080p VC-1 accompanied by a 6.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Restoration Symposium Shows Classics Coming Soon to Blu-ray

On August 21-22, the Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA) is holding its technical symposium "The Reel Thing XXII", announced by AMIA Managing Director Laura Rooney and organised and coordinated by Grover Crisp and Michael Friend. Topics presented will include the restoration of 'Rashomon', 'The Red Shoes', 'How to Marry a Millionaire', and the NASA Apollo 11 EVA moon tapes, and the challenges of restoring classic films in 4K. Several film screenings are scheduled, including the sneak preview of a mystery "major digital restoration" on Saturday evening.

BD Sales Information: August 10-16

This is something new for Blu-ray: last week, two comedies topped the BD sales chart, according to data from Nielsen VideoScan First Alert. Paramount/Dreamworks' 'I Love You, Man' was number 1, followed by Warner/New Line's '17 Again'. The previous week's top-seller, 'Fast & Furious', dropped to number 4.

British distributor Revolver Entertainment has revealed that it is releasing the five-title compilation of Werner Herzog-directed documentaries 'Encounters in the Natural World' on Blu-ray in the United Kingdom in August 31, day-and-date with the DVD. No specs or bonus features have been detailed at this time for this five- disc set.

Dumbo Is Next in Diamond Series

According to Disney-centric site Ultimate Disney, the next title released by Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment on Blu-ray as part of the Diamond Series won't be 'Fantasia' and 'Fantasia 2000', as initially pre-announced, but rather 'Dumbo', in February 2010. This decision is surprising, because 'Dumbo' was not among the ten best-selling titles originally chosen for the Platinum collection, nor was it one of the four "bonus" titles admitted in 2003.

McIntosh Reveals Universal Blu-ray Player

High-end audio specialists McIntosh have announced that they will release their MVP881BR universal Blu-ray player in October. In addition to Blu-rays, the player will be able to playback SACD, DVD-A, DVD, and CD media. The player will be Profile v2.0 (BD-Live) and support all Blu-ray audio and video codecs.

US Editions of Braveheart, Gladiator Region-locked

We don't usually do news posts to report exclusively about the region encoding of a BD, but this case the exceptional situation warrants it. The retailer Movietyme has confirmed in its blog that the first two Blu-ray titles in Paramount's Sapphire Series, 'Braveheart' and 'Gladiator', will be locked to region A.

Slim PS3 Officially Announced

To quote Chazz Palminteri on 'The Usual Suspects': "a rumor's not a rumor that doesn't die." Today at the gamescom conference in Cologne, Germany, SCEI chief Kaz Hirai officially announced the Slim PS3, available in stores from the first week of September. Price will be $299 in the US, €299 in Europe, £249 in the UK and ¥29,980 in Japan.
