Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Rumor: Clash of the Titans Blu-ray in 2010

Spanish site Planeta HD is reporting that Warner Home Video is remastering the 1981 movie 'Clash of the Titans', based on the mythological story of Perseus, for its release on Blu-ray to tie in with the remake directed by Louis Leterrier, which is expected to open theatrically in March 2010. As usual, this is unofficial until there is an announcement by the studio.

Is Anybody There? Announced for Blu-ray Release

Magnolia Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Is Anybody There?' to Blu-ray on November 17th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Technical specs for this Michael Caine film have not been announced at this time, though you can expect a VC-1 video and DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack presentation from the studio.

Rumor: Moulin Rouge Blu-ray Coming Soon, Alien in 2010

Our friends at The Digital Bits have learned from "industry sources" that Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is likely to announce the release of Baz Luhrmann's 'Moulin Rouge!' on Blu-ray "in the weeks ahead". Additionally, the site has confirmed that the studio continues to work on an 'Alien' anthology Blu-ray box set for release in 2010.

Night of the Museum Sequel BD Announced

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release the family blockbuster 'Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian', starring Ben Stiller, on Blu-ray on December 1, day-and-date with the DVD. The BD edition will be a "Triple Play", comprised of a Blu-ray, a DVD and a digital copy of the movie.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince for December

Warner Home Video has announced that it will release the latest instalment of the Harry Potter series, 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince', on Blu-ray on December 8, day-and-date with the DVD. No edition details have been divulged at this time, other than it will be a BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack.

Criterion Announces Gimme Shelter Blu-ray

The Criterion Collection has set December 1 as the release date for the Blu-ray edition of 'Gimme Shelter', the landmark documentary that follows the Rolling Stones on their notorious 1969 US tour. The BD will feature a new high-definition transfer of the uncensored 30th Anniversary version, remastered and restored from the camera original, in 1.33:1 1080p video, accompanied by stereo LPCM and multichannel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks.

Severin Puts up Hardware BD Trailer

Severin Films has put on YouTube a video preview revealing the details of the Blu-ray release of the horror/science-fiction film 'Hardware', which is due to hit store shelves on October 13, day-and-date with the DVD. The BD boasts a "new HD transfer" (although no information on audio or video codecs used is given), and new bonus materials, including an exclusive hour-long making-of featurette.

The Prisoner US BD Edition Gets Detailed

Our friends at TV Shows on DVD have the release details for the US Blu-ray edition of the classic British series 'The Prisoner', which will hit store shelves on October 27, released by A&E Home Entertainment, in conjunction with Network DVD. The series will come in five discs, featuring a complete high-definition restoration and 5.1 Dolby Digital audio.

A Christmas Tale Gets Its Blu-ray

Maybe this will take the sting off today's news of the delay of three Criterion titles: on December 1, the studio is finally releasing Arnaud Desplechin's 'A Christmas Tale', which had been previously announced for DVD but not Blu-ray. The Blu-ray will feature a new, restored high-definition transfer, approved by the director.

Mammoth Mel Brooks Collection for the Holidays

Studio Canal Collection Gets Detailed

Our British mates of DVD Times have listed the full release details of seven titles that Optimum Home Entertainment is releasing on Blu-ray on September 28 under the "Studio Canal Collection": 'Belle de jour', 'The Deer Hunter', 'The Elephant Man', 'Last Year In Marienbad', 'The Lost Honour of Katharina Blum', 'Le mépris', and 'Ran'. All will feature 1080p video and DTS-HD Master Audio. DVD Times has received discs for three of them and reports that all three were region A and B compatible.

Marvell Announces New Chip for BD Players

Marvell today introduced the 88DE3010 HD Media Processor System-on-a-Chip (SoC) to enable CE manufacturers to deliver a new generation of connected Blu-ray players. More Warner Blu-ray at Rental Via Revenue Sharing

Rentrak Corporation today announced an expanded agreement with Warner Home Video to offer for the first time Blu-ray Disc titles with its revenue sharing program. This deal significantly increases the amount of BD content available to retailers participating in Rentrak's Pay-Per-Transaction (PPT) system.

Slight Delay for Three Criterion BDs (Update)

Retailers have been alerted that three upcoming Blu-ray titles from Criterion will delayed one or two weeks. 'Monsoon Wedding', initially announced for October 13, will street on October 20. In turn, 'Howards End' and 'Wings of Desire', previously slated for October 20, will be available on November 3.

Four Titles from Tai Seng in October

Tai Seng Entertainment has announced four titles for US release on Blu-ray on October 27: the movies 'Beast Stalker', 'If You Are the One' and 'Look for a Star', and the 50-episode TV series 'Royal Tramp'. The three films will be presented in 1080p AVC video, accompanied by a Dolby TrueHD Chinese audio track; no AV details are available for 'Royal Tramp'. All titles will feature optional English subtitles.

New Justice League Animated Film Revealed

The fine folks over at World's Finest have learned that the next direct-to-video DC Universe animated title will be 'Justice League: Crisis of Two Earths', which which is currently scheduled to be released on Blu-ray sometime in Spring 2010, day-and-date with DVD release. No additional information is available at this time, though we expect to hear more about this release soon.

The Open Road Announced for Blu-ray Release

Anchor Bay Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Jeff Bridges and Justin Timberlake film 'The Open Road' to Blu-ray on November 17th, day-and-date with the DVD release. For this film video will be presented in 2.35:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

Horsemen of the Apocalypse Coming to the UK

Icon Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the gruesome crime thriller 'Horsemen of the Apocalypse' to Blu-ray in the UK on October 19th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Technical specs for this Dennis Quaid and Ziyi Zhang film have not been announced at this time.

After the conclusion of the ‘X-Men Trilogy', 20th Century Fox looked for a new way to capitalize on the extremely popular superhero property. Eventually word leaked that they would pursue a series of “origins” films which would detail the lives of the X-Men before meeting Professor Xavier. Partially because he had become one of the most popular characters, and partially because some of the story had already been told during the trilogy, Wolverine was selected as the first character to receive the origins treatment, and that film – ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine' – is out on Blu-ray today.

Wolverine Blu-ray Gets Retailer Exclusives, Barcodes

The retailers are again playing the Blu-ray exclusives game, this time with 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine', which streets today. Wal-Mart is selling an exclusive BD/DVD combo release; Best Buy, in turn, has a gift set with a Wolverine bust. Meanwhile, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and JAGTAG have announced the launch of "the first viable Twitter integration from a 2-D barcode" tied to the Wolverine launch, allowing consumers to tweet with 2-D barcodes, sharing exclusive video content from the movie with their friends and followers.

Corel Announces WinDVD Pro 2010

Corel Corporation today announced the newest version of the world's most widely used DVD playback software: Corel WinDVD Pro 2010. This latest release introduces speed enhancements, BD-Live, and new GPU-based upscaling, all delivered through a new "clean and easy-to-use interface." The software is also designed for the latest technologies in Windows 7, giving users hands-on control when used with Windows Touch enabled hardware. It has a suggested retail price of $99.99.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced 'Bruno', the "uproarious new comedy from the creator and star of Borat", for November 17, day-and-date with the DVD. The movie will be presented in 1.85:1 1080p video with a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack, and will feature an hour of exclusive footage of deleted scenes not shown in theaters.

Patrick Swayze, 1952-2009

Actor Patrick Swayze, 57, died Monday after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He is most remembered for his role as the dance instructor Jennifer Grey falls for in the 1987 romantic/dance movie 'Dirty Dancing', but he has other remarkable works (several of them on Blu-ray), which you might want to revisit to remember and pay tribute to him.

Disney Eyes First 3-D Blu-ray Releases by 2010

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment intends to release its first "theatrical-styled" 3-D Blu-ray Disc releases as early as fourth quarter 2010, to prime people for the expected launch of 3-D-at-home hardware. The studio demoed 3-D clips of its movies at a fan conference held last week in Anaheim, California.

Fox Germany Catalog in November: Borat, Rob Roy, Tora! Tora! Tora!

The German branch of Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced three very disparate titles from its library for release on Blu-ray on November 20: 'Borat', 'Rob Roy' and 'Tora! Tora! Tora!'. 'Borat' will be a BD25 while the other two will come in a BD50. In all cases, video will be encoded in 1080p and AVC. Audio choices will consist of lossless English and lossy German (plus other dubbed audio tracks).

Ghost in the Shell 2.0 and Blood: The Last Vampire Detailed

Manga Home Entertainment, in conjunction with Anchor Bay Entertainment, has announced and detailed two major animé titles for release on Blu-ray on November 24: 'Ghost in the Shell 2.0' (with over 250 reworked scenes, remastered by Mamoru Oshii himself) and 'Blood: The Last Vampire' (in a brand-new high-definition version).

Theatrical Debut for Steve Vai Concert Film, BD October 27

Steve Vai's concert film 'Where the Wild Things Are' will debut tomorrow at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. The Blu-ray of the concert film, initially announced for September 29, will instead be released on October 27. Video will be in 720p accompanied by 5.1 surround and stereo PCM tracks. Running time is 2 hours and 40 minutes, plus an hour of bonus features.
