Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Funny People BD for November

In an early announcement to retailers, it has been revealed that Universal Studios Home Entertainment is set to release the Judd Apatow comedy 'Funny People', starring Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen, on Blu-ray on November 24, day-and-date with the DVD. No information on technical specifications or special features is available at this time.

Wolverine Sells Over 20% on Blu-ray

20th Century Fox has revealed that for their recent home video release of 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine', over 20% of all units sold were on the Blu-ray format, with some retailers reporting up to 25%. This not only beats the industry standard average of 12.5%, but also becomes Fox's best performing Blu-ray title, eclipsing the Blu-ray release of 'Quantum of Solace'.

Original Toolbox Murders Coming to Blu-ray

Blue Underground has announced that they will bring the cult horror film 'Toolbox Murders' (1978) to Blu-ray on January 25th, 2010. Video will be presented in 1.66:1 1080p resolution, and while audio specs have not been announced at this time, you can expect to see either a DTS-MA or Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

Blu-ray to Enter Mainstream Next Year, Says NPD

Blu-ray Disc will penetrate the mainstream by next year, according to an analysis of the demographics of set-top player buyers performed by research company NPD. The types of consumers using Blu-ray set-top players were surveyed in February 2008 and then in August 2009. The Blu-ray install base still skews toward the more tech-savvy demographic, but other consumers are jumping in, thanks to pricing and word-of-mouth.

Rumor: Apple iMacs with Blu-ray Coming Soon

AppleInsider is reporting that Apple will soon launch a new family of iMacs with "a few added bells and whistles", possibly including –finally- Blu-ray. No specifics with regard to timing were given, but an announcement could come anytime between next week and mid-October, depending on marketing concerns.

More Target BD Exclusives Beckon: GWTW, Goonies

Yesterday we broke the news about 'The Wizard of Oz' and 'Gremlins' getting exclusive releases at Target, and it seems that there are more to come. Our friends at The Digital Bits are "hearing" rumors that the retail chain will have two other Blu-ray exclusives on its shelves on November 17: 'Gone with the Wind' (probably without the collectibles from the Ultimate Collector's Edition) and 'The Goonies' (unavailable anywhere else in the US).

Toshiba to Launch 2160p TV with Built-in BD and Cell Processor

Toshiba has confirmed that they are close to launching its flagship LED TV, which will uniquely include the 64-bit Cell processor used in Sony's PS3. The "Cell Regza" will have a panel resolution of 3840x2160 pixels. It will include a Blu-ray player and a 1TB recorder. Toshiba has confirmed that the Cell Regza will be on display at the CES show in January 2010.

250GB PS3 and Movie Bundle for Europe

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has announced a series of PS3 bundles for October, based on a version of console with the rumored 250GB hard drive. Apart from the game-focused bundles, there will also be a "movie pack", which will include the BDs of 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' and 'The Dark Knight', as well as the Blu-ray remote for the PS3.

Combo BD Player/HDTV from Best Buy/Insignia

Best Buy has an Insignia-branded 32" LCD high-definition TV with built-in Blu-ray player on its site. This model, number NS-LBD32X-10A, features 1080p resolution, a 20,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio (4,000:1 native) and 450 cd/m² brightness. On the Blu-ray side, no mention is made of BD-Live capability, although an Ethernet connection is included. It supports BD-ROM, DVD, DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD-DA, CD-R, CD-RW, JPEG, WMA and MP3 formats. It is labeled as "coming soon", with a price of $599.99.

Deal Alert: $10 off Snow White BD at Amazon (Update 2)

Amazon is currently offering a $10 discount off the purchase of the Blu-ray of 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs'. Just input the promotional code "snowhite" (only one W) at checkout. If used on the combo edition with Blu- ray packaging, this brings the final price to $14.99; but it allegedly also works on the other different BD editions of the movie.

Slim PS3 Sells One Million in First 3 Weeks

During the Tokyo Game Show, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. announced that retail sales of its new, slim PS3 achieved a total of 1 million units worldwide in the three weeks since its launch (at a retail price of ¥29,980 in Japan, $299 in the US and €299 in Europe). No breakdown of that overall sales figure by territory was divulged at this time.

According to promotional materials, Target has secured three very interesting Blu-ray exclusives which will hit the retailer's shelves next week: Joe Dante's 'Gremlins', which is not available anywhere else in the US; a 'Monsters vs Aliens' BD/DVD combo edition; and a BD release of 'The Wizard of Oz' for only $34.99.

The Hangover Announced for December 15th

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the blockbuster comedy hit 'The Hangover' to Blu-ray on December 15th, day-and-date with the DVD release. Video will be presented in 2.40:1 1080p VC-1, and while the audio spec has yet to be announced at this time, you can expect to see at least a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack for this release.

Harry Potter Years 1-6 Giftset Announced

Warner Home Video has announced that they will bring the 'Harry Potter Years 1-6 Giftset' to Blu-ray on December 8th, day-and-date with the DVD release. This seven-disc set will feature all six of the Harry Potter films released thus far in 1080p VC-1 video accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

Lost University Enrollment Now Open

Enrollment has opened for Lost University, so now fans of the popular television series can now sign up, print out their personalized Student ID card, take a placement test, and even complete their first course. The university opens officially on December 8th with the Blu-ray release of 'Lost: The Complete Fifth Season'.

Watchmen Ultimate Cut Announced and Detailed

Warner Home Video has officially announced the Blu-ray release of 'Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut' for November 3. As we informed in July, this "ultimate" cut will contain the animated comic 'Tales of the Black Freighter' woven into the director's cut of the film. The total running length will be 215 minutes. 'Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comics' and the fake documentary 'Under the Hood' are also included on a separate disc.

Anchor Bay Announces Spread Blu-ray

Anchor Bay Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Ashton Kutcher film 'Spread' to Blu-ray on November 10th, day-and-date with the DVD release. In the film, Kutcher plays a gigolo who is forced to choose between love in money. Video will be presented in 2.35:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack.

Doghouse Announced for Blu-ray in UK

Over the past decade, spoof films have become somewhat of a Hollywood sure-thing. If you're all out of unique idea, call up a Wayans brother and ask them to star in a spoof of the latest hot property (look for 'Vampire Movie' next summer – just kidding – I hope). This is unfortunate, as the genre has produced some of the funniest films of all time (including 'Airplane', the Austin Powers series, and anything written by Mel Brooks). The most successful of which can stand firmly on their own, with references to other films only adding to the film's enjoyment, rather than creating it. Films like 'Shaun of the Dead' and 'Hot Fuzz' – both being released on Blu-ray today – at very least fit this category, if not help to define it.

Sopranos Season One BD Announced in the UK

The UK branch of HBO Home Entertainment has announced the release of 'The Sopranos: The Complete First Season' on Blu-ray on November 23. Like the US edition that will come out about the same time, this will be a five-disc set, and the program will be presented in 1.78:1 1080p accompanied by a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Warner Home Video, in conjunction with New Line Home Entertainment, has officially announced the Blu-ray edition of Paul Thomas Anderson's acclaimed film 'Magnolia', which will hit store shelves on January 19, 2010. PT Anderson's previous movie, 'Boogie Nights', is expected to get a Blu-ray release in "early 2010."

Star Trek Original Series Wraps Up on Blu-ray

Who would have thought it? The whole original Trek series is going to be released on Blu-ray within the year. 'Star Trek: The Original Series, Season 2' is not even out until tomorrow, but Paramount Home Entertainment has already scheduled the third and final Season 3 for a BD release on December 15. A three-season pack is also set for December 15.

Mask of Zorro, Snatch for December

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has finally officially announced two long awaited catalog titles for release on Blu-ray on December 1: 'The Mask of Zorro' and 'Snatch', the latter of which had appeared already available for preorder with a provisional October date. 'The Mask of Zorro' will be available separately or as part of a 'The Legend of Zorro/The Mask of Zorro' double feature.

Highlander Season One Delayed Again

Those who preordered the Blu-ray edition of 'Highlander: Season 1' from Legendary Heroes have been receiving an email informing them that the title is suffering another delay and this time is scheduled to come out on October 31. TV Shows on DVD has contacted Davis-Panzer for more information and it turns out that the delay was caused by issues with the German dub track.

The Jason Statham actioner 'Crank 2: High Voltage' was far and away the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended September 13, according to Nielsen VideoScan. The sales leader of the previous week, 'Gladiator', was number two, while the number one in overall packaged-media sales, 'The Office: Season Five', got third place. Update: sales figures added.

BD Details for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

After the announcement yesterday, Warner Home Video has now revealed the full release details for 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince', due out December 8. The Blu-ray will include a DVD and a digital copy of the movie, and will exclusively feature Warner's Maximum Movie Mode, as well as Facebook Connect via BD-Live - and it will apparently come in a cool-looking lenticular case.

Ultimate Editions Announced for First Two Harry Potter Movies (Update)

Warner Home Video has announced and detailed 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: Ultimate Edition' and 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: Ultimate Edition', due out on December 8, tying in with the release of 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince'. These rereleases will contain theatrical and extended versions of the movies, and the first two parts of a new comprehensive series documentary, plus In-Movie Experience, Maximum Movie Mode and BD-Live, and a 48-page photo book. Update: audio information and ultimate editions promo trailer added.
