Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

CES 2010: Haier and TCL Blu-ray Players

It is no overstatement that Blu-ray players were all over this years' CES, basically every electronics manufacturer who had a TV for display, also had a Blu-ray player connected to it. Relatively new to the Blu-ray market are Chinese manufacturers Haier and TCL. Haier had two Blu-ray players for display, the BDP100 and the half-width BDP200W. TCL has previously released their THBD-3012 Blu-ray player and were displaying an upgraded model named THBD-8012 with USB support.

Boogie Nights Blu-ray Gets Wide Release

Warner Home Video has announced that the Blu-ray edition of the New Line movie 'Boogie Nights' –Paul Thomas Anderson's exploration of the milieu of adult cinema in the 1970s–, which had been released as a Best Buy exclusive, will be available to buy from all retailers on January 19 (the same day the 'Magnolia' BD hits store shelves).

Rumor: Taxi Driver Blu-ray Coming Soon (Update)

The Blu-ray release of 'Taxi Driver', which was initially expected for this time last year, may be a reality very soon. Wal-Mart has this Martin Scorsese masterpiece up for preorder on BD with a release date of February 9. If the date is correct, this could be a retailer exclusive. Little more is known about this edition, other that it will reportedly come in a "Blu-ray book". Update: the release date has been changed to December 31, 2010.

Collateral Blu-ray Announced

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that it will release the Dreamworks SKG production 'Collateral' on Blu-ray on March 30. This stylized crime/thriller 2004 movie, directed by Michael Mann, stars Tom Cruise as a contract killer and Jamie Foxx as the cab driver who must drive him through five hits in one night.

Where the Wild Things Are Blu-ray Announced

Warner Home Video has announced that it will release 'Where the Wild Things Are' on Blu-ray on March 2. This adaptation of Maurice Sendak's children's book, directed by Spike Jonze, will come in a BD/DVD/Digital copy combo pack. The Blu-ray will exclusively include an all-new short, titled "Higglety Pigglety Pop" (based on another Sendak book), featuring the voices of Meryl Streep and Forest Whitaker.

Thirst Blu-ray Announced in the UK (Update)

Palisades Tartan has announced that it will release Park Chan-wook's 'Thirst' on Blu-ray on January 25, 2010. There is no information regarding region coding. Note that in the US, this erotic vampire movie by the director of 'Oldboy' is not getting a Blu-ray release, as the studio that hold the rights has only announced it on DVD.

Dead Snow Blu-ray Announced for February

MPI Media Group has officially announced and detailed the Blu-ray release of 'Dead Snow', which is due to hit store shelves on February 23. 'Dead Snow' (Død snø) is a Norwegian zombie horror/comedy movie about a group of medical students on a ski vacation who are attacked by a battalion of undead Nazis.

Lionsgate Announces Precious Blu-ray

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced 'Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire' for Blu-ray release on March 9. This movie about an obese, illiterate, pregnant teen who tries to give new direction to her life earned wide acclaim at numerous film festivals (including Sundance, Cannes and Toronto) and made $45 million theatrically, a significant sum for an independent film.

Investors Buy Majority of Image Stock

Image Entertainment, which had been undergoing severe financial difficulties recently, said today it had completed the sale of $22 million in preferred stock to affiliates of the San Francisco-based investment group JH Partners LLC. The investors thus acquired majority control of Image, including four seats at the board.

Meticulously restored using state-of-the-art 4K digital technology, 'The African Queen' will now be available for a new generation to appreciate and for long-time fans to see again, as if for the first time. Legendary director John Huston's treasured romantic adventure stars the incomparable Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart in a role that won him his only Academy Award.

Doctor Zhivago Blu-ray Announced

Warner Home Video has set a May 4 date for the release of 'Doctor Zhivago: 45th Anniversary Edition'. As previously reported, the Blu-ray of this David Lean movie will come in a Digibook with a 44-page booklet, and will also exclusively include a CD sampler with eight selections from the soundtrack that won Maurice Jarre his second Oscar.

2010 Blu-ray Slate from Major Studios in France

The lack of Blu-ray title announcements at this year's CES, as had become customary in previous years, has been a disappointment for many enthusiasts. However, some foreign sites have already published the local Blu-ray release schedules, including titles from the major international studios. This may be a useful reference for what's coming up in 2010, with some reservations.

Planet 51 Blu-ray Announced for March

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the release of 'Planet 51' on a Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack on March 9. 'Planet 51' is an animated movie about an astronaut who lands on a distant planet and finds it inhabited by little green people who take him for an alien invader. The Blu-ray will exclusively include the game "Target 51", with optional iPhone controller app download from iTunes.

IDT (Integrated Device Technology, Inc.) announced today the next-generation Hollywood Quality Video (HQV) Benchmark Blu-ray. The 2.0 version offers advanced testing capabilities for such functions as compression artifact reduction, scaling quality and color processing. A Nightmare on Elm Street Blu-ray Announced (Update)

Warner Home Video, in conjunction with New Line Home Entertainment, has announced the Blu-ray release of Wes Craven's modern horror classic 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' for April 6. This BD release will exclusively include a BonusView feature titled Ready Freddy Focus Points, where users can "see alternate takes and learn filmmaking secrets behind the nightmare by jumping to video highlights while watching the movie." Update: all units include Movie Money (value $7.50) to see the Nightmare on Elm Street remake, in theaters April 30.

Disney Pledges Blu-ray 3D Support with A Christmas Carol

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced that their support for Blu-ray 3D will culminate with the release of 'A Christmas Carol' during the fourth quarter of 2010. After a successful 3-D run in theaters, Disney hopes that Robert Zemeckis' re-envisioning of this classic holiday tale will capture audiences attention as their first Blu-ray 3D release.

Two Portable Blu-ray Players Announced by Panasonic

Panasonic has introduced its second generation of portable Blu-ray Disc players, with two models: DMP-B500 (with a bigger, better screen than the first-gen DMP-B15) and DMP-B100. Both players feature much of the same state-of-the-art technology found in Panasonic's stand alone Blu-ray Disc players. They will be available in the spring; pricing is still unknown.

DEG: Consumers Spent $1.5 Billion on Blu-ray in 2009 (Update)

According to figures released today by the Digital Entertainment Group, spending on Blu-ray sales and rentals was up 67% to 1.5 billion. Homes with Blu-ray Disc players rose to 17 million, up 76% over 2008. In the fourth quarter alone, Blu-ray enjoyed title sales in excess of $500 million, representing 13.4 percent of all sell-through sales versus 8% percent for each of the prior three quarters. 3.8 Million PS3s Sold Worldwide in Holiday Season

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) today announced that the holiday season retail sales of PS3 systems during "the five weeks following the last week of November 2009" (Nov. 23-Dec 27 for Asia, Nov. 24-Dec. 28 for North America, and Nov. 21-Dec. 25 for Europe and PAL territories) exceeded 3.8 million units worldwide. The PS3 platform experienced a 76% increase in hardware sales compared to the same period in the previous year, marking the highest record sales for PS3 hardware for a holiday period.

Blu-ray Sales, Dec. 28 2009 – Jan. 3 2010: Hangover Regains Lead (Update)

During the week ended January 3, 2010, Warner Home Video's comedy 'The Hangover', recovered the top-selling spot on Blu-ray, pushing 'District 9' to second place, according to Nielsen VideoScan. In its three weeks on shelves, 'The Hangover' has become the highest-grossing comedy of all time on home video, let alone on Blu-ray, where it has moved 1.5 million units so far (including sales to consumers and for rental). Update: top 10 and overall sales figures added.

Panasonic Blu-ray Player Lineup, Also with 3D

Panasonic today introduced its new Blu-ray Disc player lineup, with models DMP-BD45, DMP-BD65, DMP-BD85, and the first Panasonic player with support of 3D Blu-ray: the DMP-BDT350. As with most players announced today, Netflix support is now included. Availability is expected for spring 2010, but no pricing information has been divulged at this time.

Today Samsung unveiled its 2010 lineup of Blu-ray players, comprised of four models: the BD-C7500 (the slimmest Blu-ray player to date); BD-C6900 (supporting the new 3D Blu-ray standard and Winner of the CES 2010 Award for Inovation; BD-C6500; and the entry-level BD-C5500. Poseidon Blu-ray Announced

Warner Home Video has announced Wolfgang Petersen's action/disaster movie 'Poseidon' for release on Blu-ray on April 6. This was one of Warners' last few titles released on HD DVD and still awaiting a Blu-ray release. As with other titles recently announced by the studio, audio will be presented in DTS-HD Master Audio.

Sharp today announced two new Blu-ray players, models BD-HP70U and BD-HP24U, with Deep Color, high energy efficiency and a "versatile Ethernet connection" that enables Netflix, BD-Live and RSS feeds (delivered directly on the players' LCD display). A Blu-ray home theater system was also announced, under model nuber BD-MPC-41.

Video Business Magazine Shuts Down

Reed Business Information, owner of the home entertainment trade magazine Video Business, has announced that it is shutting down both the printed and online publication, as part of a larger, ongoing strategy to divest itself of most of its business-to-business publications in the US. The January 4 issue was the last for the magazine.

Toshiba America Consumer Products has introduced three new Blu-ray players, under model numbers BDX2500, BDX2700 and BDX3000. All feature multichannel analog audio outputs, online connectivity, and support access to Netflix, Cinema Now, Pandora and VUDU. Additionally, the BDX3000 will add 3-D playback.

Four-week Delay for Warner Blu-ray Titles at Netflix

Netflix Inc. and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment announced today they have reached a new agreement, according to which new DVD and Blu-ray titles from WB will be available for rental 28 days after their release. At the time, it is unclear whether catalog titles newly released to Blu-ray will be affected as well. Similar agreements are expected between Netflix and other major movie studios later this year.
