Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

The Killer Blu-ray in March

Retail giant Wal-Mart has put up on its website a preorder page for John Woo's cult action classic, 'The Killer', which reportedly will be released on March 30 by Vivendi Entertainment, as part of the Dragon Dynasty label. It will have audio tracks in Cantonese, Mandarin and English, and subtitles in English and Spanish. Special features will consist of behind-the-scenes featurettes and interviews.

Warner Announces The Blind Side on Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced 'The Blind Side' for Blu-ray release on March 23 on a Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack. This sports drama, starring Sandra Bullock, was one of the biggest non-action theatrical hits of 2009, with a box office take of over $227 million. It will have "over an hour of Blu-ray exclusives."

Summit Entertainment has set March 16 as the release date for 'Astro Boy', the film adaptation of the classic manga and anime created in 1951 by the legendary artist Osamu Tezuka. Astro Boy (voiced by Freddie Highmore) is a young robot with incredible powers, created by a brilliant scientist named Dr. Tenma (Nicolas Cage), who embarks on a journey in search of acceptance.

Anchor Bay Home Entertainment has announced 'The Men Who Stare at Goats' for release on Blu-ray on March 23. 'The Men Who Stare at Goats' is a dark comedy about a reporter who meets a man who claims to be a former member of a US Army unit that employs paranormal powers in their missions.

Chaplin Feature Films on Blu-ray from Kinowelt

Kinowelt Home Entertainment has unveiled its Blu-ray slate for April/May, which prominently features no fewer than five movies directed by and starring Charles Chaplin: 'The Kid', 'The Gold Rush', 'City Lights', 'Modern Times', and 'The Great Dictator'. At the moment it is not confirmed whether they'll be sold separately or in a movie set.

Reviewers Find Oppo inside Lexicon Blu-ray Player

Veteran audio/video site Audioholics received the high-end, THX-certified Lexicon BD-30 Blu-ray player (which lists for $3,499) for review and has now published its product analysis, which will come as a shocker to many. After a thorough review, they conclude that Lexicon "simply lifted the Oppo BDP-83 and threw it into their own chassis."

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced three catalog titles from the 1990s for release on April 6: the speculative military drama 'Flight of the Intruder', starring Willem Dafoe and Danny Glover; the erotic thriller 'Jade', starring David Caruso and Linda Fiorentino; and the sci-fi horror movie 'The Relic', starring Penelope Ann Miller and Tom Sizemore.

Severin Announces Dogora on Blu-ray

Severin has acquired the non-verbal film 'Dogora', directed by Patrice Leconte ('The Hairdresser's Husband', 'Ridicule', 'The Perfume of Yvonne', 'The Girl on the Bridge'). It will be released on Blu-ray on April 27. For inclusion on the disc, a third part of the ongoing Leconte on Leconte interview series was recorded.

Criterion Reveals April Blu-ray Slate

The Criterion Collection has announced three titles for release on Blu-ray in April. Olivier Assayas' 'Summer Hours' (L'heure d'été), voted 2009's best film in a poll of over 100 critics at indieWIRE, and the visually stunning New Wave Jean-Luc Godard masterwork 'Vivre sa vie', are set for April 20. A week later, Ang Lee's 'Ride with the Devil' will come out, reconstructed to the director's original vision, with 13 minutes of additional footage.

Twilight: New Moon Blu-ray Dated (Update)

According to Summit Entertainment's Twitter page, the studio has officially set March 20 as the release date for 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon'. The second movie in this vampire franchise was panned by critics but was a huge box office hit, grossing nearly $100 million more than 'Twilight'. Only a special edition will be released for sale. Update: bonus features added.

The Mentalist Season 1 Blu-ray Announced in Germany

The Germany branch of Warner Home Video has announced the release on Blu-ray of the first season of the successful crime/mystery TV series 'The Mentalist,' which had been released in late 2009 in standard definition only. This six-disc set will include the 23 episodes of the first season. There is no information regarding special features, and the English audio track will be Dolby Digital only.

WB Planning Looney Tunes on Blu-ray

Animation expert and historian Jerry Beck, while speaking on his blog CartoonBrew of the recently announced 'Looney Tunes Super Stars' DVD line, was asked if there was any chance of seeing any Looney Tunes on Blu-ray. Beck replied, "Yes, there are plans for a Blu-Ray release of Looney Tunes. I can say no more."

James and the Giant Peach Blu-ray Coming Soon

A trailer has surfaced online to promote the upcoming release of the special edition Blu-ray of Henry Selick's animated movie 'James and the Giant Peach'. No other release details are given, other than the movie will be "restored and remastered". There is no specific release date either, but as it was produced by Tim Burton, it might tie in with the home video release of 'Alice in Wonderland'.

Shinjuku Incident Blu-ray Announced

Cine Asia has announced 'Shinjuku Incident', a 2009 crime/action thriller starring Jackie Chan and set in Japan, for release on Blu-ray in the UK on February 22. Audio options will include the original language (Cantonese and Japanese) in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, as well as a 5.1 English dub track. There is no information regarding region coding.

Universal Flipper Blu-ray Disc Test Run

Universal's latest Blu-ray-related initiative, called the "flipper disc" (the Blu-ray version of the controversial HD DVD combo discs, with hidef on one side of the platter and DVD on the other) was met wit skepticism by the enthusiast community. Upon receiving the first flipper BDs, Blu-ray.com reviewer Kenneth Brown tested them thoroughly and came back with the reassurance that the discs are well manufactured and work smoothly in a variety of players. Single-discs with artwork may be preferred for aesthetic reasons, but that is a relatively minor concern.

Mobile Suit Gundam UC Vol. 1 Blu-ray Amazon Exclusive

Bandai Visual Japan announced today that on March 12, Amazon.com will release 'Mobile Suit Gundam UC (Unicorn) Vol.1' on Blu-ray with a two-month exclusive window in North America under the “Honneamise” label. Video will be 1080p with Japanese and English audio tracks, both in 5.1 Dolby TrueHD and 2.0 Dolby Digital, and subtitles in Japanese, English, French, Spanish, and Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin).

Rumor: Armageddon and Tombstone on Blu-ray

Home cinema site The HD Room has gotten hold of cover art for the Blu-ray editions of two movies belonging to the Disney/Buena Vista catalog: 'Armageddon' and 'Tombstone'. Although that does not necessarily mean that either of these titles will be announced soon on Blu-ray, it is a good sign. No other edition details are known at this time.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that it will release 'The Fourth Kind' on Blu-ray on March 16. This horror/thriller movie on abductions by aliens in Nome, Alaska, starring Milla Jovovich, is purportedly based on "actual case studies" – with the help of news stories posted on the Internet in what was called "a 'Blair Witch Project' style fake-out". Update: full special features added, including two BD-Live exclusive featurettes.

The French Blu-ray release of 'Inglourious Basterds' contains a leaflet listing some titles coming soon to the format, and among them 'Out of Africa'. It so happens that this year marks the 25th anniversary of this acclaimed movie, directed by the late Sydney Pollack and winner of seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Blockbuster CFO: Delayed New Releases at Netflix Are "Good News for Us"

Speaking at an investor event in New York, Blockbuster CFO Thomas Casey said that the recent deal between Netflix and Warner Home Video delaying availability of WB new DVD and Blu-ray releases at Netflix for four weeks grants Blockbuster additional revenue potential. “It clearly is good news for us, in a sense, we now have product that Netflix won't have for that 28-day period,” Casey said.

For many who watch the Kubrick classic '2001: A Space Odyssey' for the first time, it's often difficult to fully digest the eon-spanning story and epilepsy-inducing visuals into anything more than a confusing mess. Upon repeat viewings, however, a deeper story is revealed and the fog of confusion clears to reveal one of the most definitive science fiction films of all time. Sadly, the more popular science fiction films over the past decade are better defined as "futuristic action", and resemble little of what science fiction fans have loved since Fritz Lang's 'Metropolis'. Luckily, writer/director Duncan Jones created 'Moon' - available today on Blu-ray - as a reminder of science fiction has always been and should always be.

CES 2010: Haier and TCL Blu-ray Players

It is no overstatement that Blu-ray players were all over this years' CES, basically every electronics manufacturer who had a TV for display, also had a Blu-ray player connected to it. Relatively new to the Blu-ray market are Chinese manufacturers Haier and TCL. Haier had two Blu-ray players for display, the BDP100 and the half-width BDP200W. TCL has previously released their THBD-3012 Blu-ray player and were displaying an upgraded model named THBD-8012 with USB support.
