Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Four-week Delay for Warner Blu-ray Titles at Netflix

Netflix Inc. and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment announced today they have reached a new agreement, according to which new DVD and Blu-ray titles from WB will be available for rental 28 days after their release. At the time, it is unclear whether catalog titles newly released to Blu-ray will be affected as well. Similar agreements are expected between Netflix and other major movie studios later this year.

LG Announces 2010 Blu-ray Lineup

LG Electronics today introduced its 2010 lineup, with three new Blu-ray players, labeled BD550, BD570 and BD590 (the first BD player in the US to feature an integrated 250-GB hard drive), and three BD home theater systems, with model numbers LHB335, LHB535 and LHB975. Pricing and availability are still pending.

Universal Launches Blu-ray Giveaway on Facebook

Universal Studios is having a huge Blu-ray giveaway, under the tag line "We're giving away 2,010 Blu-rays to kick off 2010!" Every week day through January 29, the studio will give away 25 four-movie packages among those who enter the giveaway through Universal's Facebook app. This sweepstakes is open to people at least 18 years old that reside in United States.

Krell Announces Reference Blu-ray Player

High-end AV brand Krell has announced the introduction of the company's first Blu-ray player, the Evolution 555, which purports to "set the reference standard for performance in the Blu-ray player category". It is BD-Live compliant and its dual HDMI output is upgradeable to HDMI 1.4. It will carry a price tag of $15,000 and will ship in the late second quarter of the year.

Park Chan-Wook's Vengeance Trilogy Blu-ray in March

Palisades Tartan has officially announced the Blu-ray release of Park Chan-Wook's 'Vengeance Trilogy', comprised of 'Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance', 'Oldboy' (previously released separately by the defunct Tartan Video) and 'Lady Vengeance'. The release date for this eight-disc set has been set on March 16. No separate editions have been announced.

French Thriller 36 on Blu-ray from Palisades Tartan

Palisades Tartan has officially announced that it will release the French crime thriller '36' (36 quai des orfèvres, also known as 'Department 36') on Blu-ray in the US on February 9. No technical details were disclosed, but they are likely to mirror those of the UK edition, released in November 2009, which was encoded in AVC and 5.1 DTS HD-Master Audio.

Richard Kelly's The Box Announced on Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that it will release 'The Box' on Blu-ray on February 23, in a BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo edition. 'The Box' is a science-fiction thriller, written and directed by Richard Kelly, based upon a short story written by Richard Matheson. Audio on this single-layer Blu-ray will be DTS-HD Master Audio.

Back to the Future Blu-ray Spanish Prank News Uncovers Actual News

Last December 28, Spanish home entertainment site ZonaDVD published a news post announcing a Blu-ray release of the 'Back to the Future Trilogy' for July 2010, backing up that claim with a very professionally-produced trade ad. Several international sites have run with the story, forcing ZonaDVD to issue a note explicitly admitting that it was the local equivalent of an April Fools' joke. However, now Universal sources are allegedly confirming that the title will indeed come out this year.

CyberLink to Demo 3D Blu-ray, 2-D Upconverting, Managed Copy on PowerDVD

This week in Las Vegas, CyberLink Corp will showcase the next generation of multimedia technologies from January 7 to January 10. They include an "astounding" demonstration of PowerDVD to watch 3-D movie titles as well as a feature for "turning any 2-D DVDs into a 3-D experience" on desktop and notebook PCs. CyberLink will also showcase BD Managed Copy for enabling Blu-ray movie jukebox at home.

Trailer Park Ready for Blu-ray Production in 3-D

Hollywood-based entertainment marketing agency Trailer Park announced that its recently formed Advanced Content Group (TPAC) now has the ability to develop 3-D interactive menus, immersive environment walkthroughs, bonus features, and games for Blu-ray in anaglyph or stereoscopic models. Curt Doty, TPAC Executive Vice President and his team have been collaborating with Panasonic Hollywood Labs in developing production guidelines for the 3D Blu-ray spec, which was recently finalised by the Blu-ray Disc Association.

Mitsubishi to Display 3-D Blu-ray Players and TV Adapter at CES

Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America, Inc. will showcase its 3-D-ready TV products by displaying 3-D content delivered by Blu-Ray players and other video sources at CES 2010 in the "Experience 3D Tech Zone". Mitsubishi also announced the 3DC-1000, a new 3-D adapter which will provide Mitsubishi 3-D-ready Home Theater TV owners with an "easy and affordable solution" to display 3-D from a 3-D Blu-Ray player. This adapter will be available in late spring of 2010.

Blu-ray Raked in $1.1 Billion in 2009

According to preliminary data from Adams Media Research, Blu-ray movie sales in 2009 generated revenues of $1.1 billion, up nearly 100% from the previous year. 12.6% of the money from disc sales in 2009 came from Blu-ray. The number of homes with Blu-ray players grew from 3 million to 8 million.

Warner Blu-ray Double Features Detailed

Warner Home Video has revealed the details for the first wave of Blu-ray double features recently announced by the studio for February 23: 'Dirty Harry/ Magnum Force', 'Analyze This/Analyze That', 'Presumed Innocent/Frantic', 'Miss Congeniality/Miss Congeniality 2' and 'Grumpy Old Men/ Grumpier Old Men'. 'Dirty Harry/Magnum Force' will be a two-disc set and feature Dolby TrueHD audio, while the other four will reportedly be single-disc sets with DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks.

Blu-ray Announced for Lord of the Rings Animated Movie

Warner Home Video has officially announced the release on Blu-ray of Ralph Bakshi's 1978 animated movie 'The Lord of the Rings', which will hit store shelves on April 6, tying in with Peter Jackson's 'The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy'. It will include a new featurette, titled "Forging through the Darkness: The Ralph Bakshi Vision for The Lord of the Rings," and a digital copy.

Over 15 Million Blu-ray Movies Sold in Q4 2009

According to estimations by the research department of Home Media Magazine, Blu-ray software sales in the fourth quarter of 2009 through December 20 was just 23,000 copies short of 15 million – a milestone certain to be passed when the sales for the week ended December 27 are added. The year's top-selling title was 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen', closely followed by 'Star Trek'.

Amazon Sells Over 100,000 Blu-ray Players During Holiday Season

Amazon has announced that they have sold enough Blu-ray players during the holiday season that, if lined up side-by-side, would measure over 27 miles in length. Quick math by Video Business (who estimates the average Blu-ray Disc player is 17 inches in width) shows that would equal about 100,600 players.

Sony, Panasonic Propose Blu-ray Capacity Increase

Sony and Panasonic have announced that they have developed a new optical disc evaluation technology that will allow the layer capacity of Blu-ray media to increase from 25GB to 33.4GB using existing Blu-ray laser diodes. This would presumably allow existing Blu-ray hardware - including Blu-ray Disc players and burners - to play the proposed discs with a simple firmware upgrade.

Breaking Bad Seasons 1 & 2 Announced on Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has officially set a March 16 street date for the Blu-ray release of the first and second seasons of 'Breaking Bad', a television series about a chemistry teacher who learns he has terminal cancer and, to make sure his family is taken care of after he's gone, decides to use uses his training as a chemist to cook and sell crystal meth.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced '2012' for Blu-ray release on March 2. Roland Emmerich's hugely successful disaster movie will be available on BD in two editions: a single-disc release and a two-disc special edition (exclusive to Blu-ray) with "over 90 minutes of thrilling special features". Update: details for one and two-disc releases added.

Avatar Blu-ray to Feature Deleted Na'vi Sex Scene

In a recent group interview, James Cameron has revealed that, when making 'Avatar', he shot a sex scene between two Na'vi characters. "We had it in and we cut it out," said Cameron, "so that will be something for the special edition DVD, if you want to see how they have sex." Criterion New Year's Card Hints at Upcoming Blu-ray Titles

The Criterion Collection asked resident “wacky” artist, Jason Polan, to help them ring in the New Year. The result is a cryptic e-card that features numerous obscure references to upcoming titles. Members of the blu-ray.com forum and other boards have tried to decipher the clues and concluded that the studio will soon release such titles as Fritz Lang's 'M', Powell and Pressburger's 'The Red Shoes', and Visconti's 'The Leopard'.

Wal-Mart to Broaden Focus on Blu-ray

Wal-Mart is committed to rolling out its ‘Blu-ray Experience Area' (which ties in high-definition hardware and software into a central merchandising space within Walmart's entertainment department) to more of its stores during 2010. The chain believes that as pricing has dropped for hardware and software, Wal-Mart's family customer base is now seriously willing to upgrade their home entertainment systems to Blu-ray.

Blu-ray Sales, Dec. 21-27: District 9 Wins the Week

During the week ended December 27, 'District 9' was the top-selling title on Blu-ray, according to Nielsen VideoScan. The South African science-fiction movie with an allegorical subtext also had a substantial 41% of its unit sales coming from high definition. 'The Hangover' came in second, with nearly 90% as many sales as 'District 9'.

Piranha Blu-ray Coming Soon

In April 2010, Shout Factory will commence a new series of home video releases under the banner, “Roger Corman's Cult Classics”, presenting classic titles from the New World Pictures film library. The first title to come out on Blu-ray will be Joe Dante's 'Piranha', which according to retailer information will be released on May 4, 2010.

Gangs of New York Remastered Blu-ray in February

An early announcement to retailers indicates that on February 2, 2010, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment will release 'Gangs of New York (Remastered Edition)', as part of a new "Miramax Award-Winning Collection". This Martin Scorsese movie had already been released in May 2008, and that edition (whose picture was highly controversial among forum enthusiasts) is apparently now discontinued.

HBO Reveals Hung Season One Coming to Blu-ray

In an early announcement to retailers, HBO Home Entertainment has revealed that they will bring 'Hung - Season One' to Blu-ray. According to our good friends at TV Shows on DVD, it will be a two-disc release featuring all 10 episodes from the first season. Technical specs and special features have not been announced at this time.

Entourage Getting First Blu-ray Release

According to our good friends over at TV Shows on DVD, HBO is planning to bring 'Entourage: The Complete Sixth Season' to Blu-ray sometime this summer. This would be the first Blu-ray release for the HBO series, which has been broadcast in HD for many seasons. As the release is still in the planning phases, no technical specs or special features have been announced at this time.

Sleeping Beauty Returns to the Vault in January

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has revealed that the 'Sleeping Beauty: 50th Anniversary Platinum Edition' Blu-ray will return to the Disney Vault on January 30th. Once it returns to the vault, no additional copies will be produced. Those who have yet to purchase the title should do so within the next month, or risk not being able to purchase a copy until its next release in 2015.
