Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Porcupine Tree’s Anesthetize Blu-ray Dated, Gets London Premiere

As previously reported, the progressive rock band Porcupine Tree will release its new live film Anesthetize on Blu-ray, with a release date of June 15 (May 20 in the UK). A special-edition cloth-bound hardback book BD/DVD/CD combo pack limited to 5,000 copies is shipping in early May, available only at the Porcupine Tree online store. The film will premiere at a London cinema, with the band and film director attending.

DEG: Blu-ray Disc Sales Increases by 74%, Players 125%

According to US sales figures for the home entertainment industry released today by DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group, Blu-ray Disc software sales continued to rise in the first quarter of 2010, up 74% compared to the same period last year. BD Rental was up 36%. Hardware sales experienced remarkable growth, with set-top players up an "astounding" 125% versus first quarter 2009. Household penetration of all Blu-ray Disc compatible devices, including set-top players, PC drives and PS3 consoles has now reached 18 million US homes.

Timed with the upcoming launch of Sony Electronics' 3D capable BRAVIA LCD HDTVs and Blu-ray players, the UK branch of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment announced today the release of the studio's first Blu-ray 3D™ title in the United Kingdom: Sony Pictures Animation's comedy adventure Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, debuting June 14. This Blu-ray 3D™ was mastered at Colorworks and authored at Sony Digital Authoring Center (DAC).

Criterion Reveals July Blu-ray Slate

The Criterion Collection has announced three films for release on Blu-ray. On July 20, the studio will release two Technicolor classics directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger: Black Narcissus (1947) and The Red Shoes (1948). One week later, it will release the 2007 film The Secret of the Grain (La graine et le mulet), directed by Abdellatif Kechiche, and winner of four César awards, including best picture and director.

Best Buy Gets Exclusive WWE on Blu-ray

Best Buy has struck a deal to have exclusive rights to titles from WWE Home Video on Blu-ray for a period of several months. Apart from WWE Royal Rumble 2010 (already available), upcoming titles include WWE: Wrestlemania XXVI (Three-disc collector edition) and WWE: Best Pay-per-View Matches 2009-2010, slated for July 6 and July 20, respectively.

For the week ended April 11, The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy was the top-selling title on Blu-ray, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert. BD sales of Peter Jackson's adaptation of J.R.R.'s fantasy classic propelled overall disc sales of this title to fifth place in the packaged-media chart. The only major day-and-date title of the week, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, debuted at number 5 on the BD chart. Update: sales figures added.

Fox Announces Event Titles on Blu-ray, 75th Anniversary Campaign

Today, 20th Century Fox Entertainment kicked off a 12-month marketing, promotions, publicity and media campaign (including several giveaways) to honor and promote the studio's legacy and library. The studio has also announced the major catalog titles it will be releasing on Blu-ray in the second half of the year; most of them are already known, but there is one prominent new addition: Michael Mann's The Last of the Mohicans.

The new 3D site of Samsung Australia has included important health and safety information for buyers to read before they or their children use the 3D function available on 3D displays and Blu-ray players. Children, being more liable to 3D side effects, should be closely supervised. Pregnant women, the elderly, persons suffering from serious medical conditions, sleep deprivation or under the influence of alcohol are advised to avoid 3D altogether.

The first 3D Blu-ray title for general release has been announced, and it wasn't in America. The German branch of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed the details for the 3D edition of the CG animated movie Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, slated for June 1. A 2D Edition is also coming out at the same time.

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced two comedy titles (originally from the Paramount library) for release on Blu-ray on July 6: Jimmy Hollywood, starring Joe Pesci and Christian Slater; and Ladybugs, starring Rodney Dangerfield. Both will be presented with 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks. No special features have been listed.

Synapse Acquires Hammer Titles, Possible Blu-ray

Specialty studio Synapse Films has acquired the rights to three films from the Hammer Films library: Robert Young's Vampire Circus, John Hough's Twins of Evil and Peter Sasdy's Hands of the Ripper. Synapse chief Don May, Jr. told Fangoria that the studio has new high-definition transfers of all three features and that it's "very possible" that they will get a Blu-ray release.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, in conjunction with MGM, has officially announced The Man with No Name Trilogy, which, as previously reported, is set to come out on Blu-ray on June 1. This collection consists of the three westerns starring Clint Eastwood and directed by Sergio Leone: A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (the last one of which had already been released on Blu-ray in May 2009).

The Japan branch of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced that on July 14 it will release the Studio Ghibli production Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Disc specs include 2.0 Japanese and English audio (uncompressed for Japanese, Dolby Digital for English) and subtitles in English. A US release is expected for later in the year.

MGM has announced Showgirls, in a "15th Anniversary Sinsational Edition" Blu-ray featuring its NC-17 131-minute uncut version, with a street date of June 15. Writer Joe Eszterhas and director Paul Verhoeven followed up their smash hit Basic Instinct by upping the exploitation ante with this look at the world of Vegas showgirls, which was a critical and box-office failure but went on to earn somewhat of a cult status in home video.

The Mark Knopfler official website informs that the legendary live concert Alchemy: Dire Straits Live will be released on Blu-Ray on May 10. The picture has been restored by restoration specialist and live concert director Dick Carruthers. The audio (in PCM stereo and DTS-MA 5.1) was mixed by Chuck Ainlay, winner of the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Surround Sound Album (Brothers in Arms - 20th Anniversary edition).

Eureka Entertainment has announced Wizards for release on Blu-ray on May 24. This animation fantasy film, set in a post-apocalyptic world where technology has been outlawed after a nuclear disaster, is considered one of the most ambitious and inventive films from animator Ralph Bakshi (who would go on to direct The Lord of the Rings).
