Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

To mark the Spanish launch of Avatar, the Plaza del Callao square in downtown Madrid has been dressed as the jungle of Pandora. All day long, various free events will be held, including body painting by the makeup artist of [Rec] 2, cartoonists drawing members of the public as Na'vi, Avatars walking along the streets of Madrid, and "many more surprises."

On June 22, Columbia Records/Sony Music will release Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band's London Calling: Live In Hyde Park concert film on Blu-Ray disc. Captured in London at the Hard Rock Calling Festival on June 28, 2009 in HD, this release marks the first Springsteen outdoor concert film, and the first from a festival setting.

The 1963 low-budget psychological thriller The Sadist has been announced on Blu-ray, released by musician/film historian Johnny Legend, in an all-new high-definition transfer, "taken directly from the original 35mm Master Print." It will be released in a BD/DVD 2-disc set, with several rare bonus features.

Avatar’s Tree of Souls in London’s Hyde Park

To mark the UK Blu-ray release of Avatar, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is erecting a giant interactive replica of the movie's "Tree of Souls" at Speakers' Corner in Hyde Park, London. The visually spectacular exhibit will be live for three days between April 24 and April 26, and officially unveiled by Stephen Lang, who stars as Colonel Miles Quaritch in the film.

One of the most sought-after import titles is getting a US Blu-ray release: The Illusionist, starring Edward Norton, Jessica Biel and Paul Giamatti, is being released on Blu-ray on June 8. Back in the fall of 2006, show-business fate would have it that two movies about stage magicians in turn-of-the-century Europe (this one and The Prestige) opened within a month of each other.

On Sunday, April 25, at 4 p.m., HMV's flagship store at 150 Oxford Street, London, will be transformed into Pandora to host the official UK launch of Avatar on Blu-ray. A very special guest on the day will be actor Stephen Lang, who plays Colonel Miles Quaritch in the film. Lang will be interviewed live on stage and sign the very first copies of the Blu-ray.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced the release on Blu-ray of Crazy on the Outside for April 13. This comedy was the directorial debut for Tim Allen, who also starred, along with Sigourney Weaver and Ray Liotta. However, such a star-studded cast failed to impress critics, who unanimously panned the movie, which never went beyond a limited theatrical release. Update: released as Target exclusive.

Retailers Fight Avatar Blu-ray Price War

In an effort to attract buyers, most retailers are heavily discounting the Blu-ray/DVD release of James Cameron's blockbuster Avatar. The first with a low price was Target, which in its weekly ad announced that the BD would be available for $19.99. Toys 'R Us has a coupon good from Thursday to Saturday. And just minutes ago, Amazon also dropped its price to $19.99.

Confirming earlier reports, Warner Home Video will release Hamlet on Blu-ray on August 17. This 1996 four-hour adaptation of William Shakespeare's world-famous tragedy, directed by Kenneth Branagh with an all-star cast, was the last narrative film shot on 65mm film stock. It will be presented in a Digibook edition.

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that it will release Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island on Blu-ray on June 8. No edition details or special features are available at the moment. This psychological thriller, based on a novel of the same title by Dennis Lehane, performed unexpectedly well at the box office, with $125 million in revenue.

Panasonic France has announced that its first 3D-compatible Blu-ray player, model DMP-BDT300 (European equivalent of the DMP-BDT350), will be released with two bundled 3D movies: Fox's Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Universal's Coraline. At the moment there is no information as to whether the bundled titles will be exclusive.

According to data from the UK's Official Charts Company and released April 15 by the British Video Association, 2.7 million BDs were sold in the first quarter of the year, a 69% increase year-on-year, taking the total number of Blu-ray Discs sold to 15.6 million units since launch. Sales revenue from Blu-ray in Q1 was up 50% on the same period in 2009. Update: sales figures for top 3 added.

This thriller, about a terrorist (Michael Sheen) who's planted nuclear devices in three US cities and the interrogator (Samuel L. Jackson) hired to extract the truth from him, didn't get a theatrical release, despite its high-profile cast.

During a panel at the C2E2 comic convention in Chicago, Steve Sansweet, Lucasfilm's Director of Content Management and Head of Fan Relations, stated that the company has been working on a Star Wars Blu-ray set. "We have been at work for a couple of years working on—I won't call it the Ultimate Set because we keep finding stuff—but, a very full set of all six movies on Blu-ray with lots of extra material", said Sansweet.

E1/Koch Entertainment has announced Parasomnia for release on Blu-ray on July 13. Parasomnia is a 2008 independent horror film, written and directed by William Malone (director of the 1999 House on Haunted Hill remake). It premiered at the Screamfest festival in October 2008 but didn't get a theatrical release.

New Video Group has announced and detailed the Blu-ray edition of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, which will hit store shelves on May 25. Dr. Horrible is a 42-minute musical in three parts, created by Joss Whedon during the 2007-2008 writers strike and originally made for online distribution. It won an Emmy award.

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced that it will release Alice in Wonderland on Blu-ray on June 1. This new reimagining of the Lewis Carroll classic, directed by Tim Burton, went on to earn close to $800 million at the worldwide box office, partly thanks to showings of its 3D conversion. It will be presented in a three-disc Blu-ray Combo Pack (BD/DVD/Digital Copy) and one-disc Blu-ray editions.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief for release on June 22. Based on the popular book series by Rick Riordan and directed by Chris Columbus, this film follows trouble-prone teenager Percy Jackson, who gets embroiled with the Greek gods, as they suspect Percy of having stolen Zeus' lightning bolt. A digital copy will be included.

According to early retailer information, Kino Video has set a July 6 street date for the Blu-ray edition of the silent comedy Steamboat Bill, Jr., starring Buster Keaton as the mild-mannered son of a steamboat captain caught in the middle of the bitter rivalry between his father and another Mississippi riverboat owner. Release details have not been revealed at this time.
