Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Vampire Diaries Season 1 Blu-ray Announced

Warner Home Video has announced The Vampire Diaries: The Complete First Season for release on Blu-ray on August 31. This four-disc set will include all 22 episodes of the first season, developed by Kevin Wiliamson (of Scream and Dawson's Creek fame) based on a series of novels by L.J. Smith (the first of which is offered with the BD as a downloadable audiobook).

Today only, you can buy the BBC you can buy the James Bond 11-Movie Ultimate Collection (consisting of Dr. No, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, Live and Let Die, The Man with the Golden Gun, Moonraker, For Your Eyes Only, Licence to Kill, The World is Not Enough, and Die Another Day) for only $99.99 (67% off), or about $9 per movie. The price history for this item shows that this is the lowest it has been. Update: deal expired.

Redbox Blu-ray Rentals Probably $1.50 a Night

During a keynote speech today, Redbox president Mitch Lowe revealed that the company will probably price rentals of Blu-ray titles at $1.50 a night, or half a dollar more than the usual price to rent DVDs from Redbox kiosks. According to Lowe,16.9% of Redbox customers own a Blu-ray player. He also said that kiosks will start offering BDs over the next few months, and expects this to drive format adoption.

Summer Sale at DeepDiscount

Deepdiscount.com started today a summer sale offering an additional 25% off by entering the code "25MORE" at checkout. Unlike previous sales at this etailer, most but not all released Blu-ray titles are eligible, so you have to look at individual titles to know if they qualify; for example, at the time of writing 44 Inch Chest does, but 9 Songs doesn't. This promotion ends on June 20.

Davis-Panzer has informed TV Shows on DVD that Highlander: Season Two, initially slated for Aprilwill finally be available to buy –exclusively through the Legendary Heroes website- from late July. Additional bonus features have been added, thanks to the contributions of fans of the series.

After a record five weeks of undisputed dominion over the Blu-ray sales, Avatar finally was dethroned – and this time not by a romantic movie, unlike what happened at the theaters or on DVD. HBO's True Blood: The Complete Second Season was the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended May 30, according to Nielsen VideoScan. Update: sales charts and figures added.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced Diary of a Wimpy Kid, based on the best-selling illustrated novel by Jeff Kinney, for release on a Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack on August 3. The BD comes custom-packaged with additional cartoon pages, and will include "Greg's Deleted Diary Pages", which bring the diary to life with all-new moments not included in the feature film.

Not the Messiah Blu-ray Announced in the UK

The UK branch of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray release Not the Messiah (He's a Very Naughty Boy), which will hit store shelves on June 14. This title delivers a one-time performance celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Monty Python's comedy troupe with a song oratorio inspired by the cult film Monty Python's Life of Brian at London's Royal Albert Hall.

Black Dahlia and Skeleton Key Get Blu-ray

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced two recent catalog titles of the thriller genre for release on Blu-ray on September 7: The Black Dahlia (Brian De Palma, 2006) and The Skeleton Key (Iain Softley, 2005). Both of them will come in single-sided (non-flipper) BD50 discs.

The price of two recent Blu-ray catalog titles from Disney, Armageddon and Tombstone, has just dropped on Amazon to $12.99, matching Best Buy. But what makes this a red-hot deal is that the etailer still is offering a $10 discount when ordering both titles. As a result, at the time of writing you can buy the two movies for $15.98. Magnolia Home Entertainment has announced Survival of the Dead: Ultimate Undead Edition, the latest zombie film by George A. Romero (which picks up right where Diary of the Dead left off), for release on Blu-ray on August 24. The Blu-ray edition will come in "specialty custom effects packaging."

The Runaways Announced on Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the rock biopic The Runaways for release on Blu-ray on July 20. This movie about the all-girl rock band of the same name stars Kristen Stewart, and Dakota Fanning in one of her first grownup roles. The Blu-ray will exclusively feature a Runaways Playlist to access real time information on the cast, music, trivia and more.

The Greatest Blu-ray Announced

National Entertainment Movie has announced The Greatest for release on Blu-ray on July 13. This independent drama, starring Pierce Brosnan, Susan Sarandon and Carey Mulligan, premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize.

When Tim Burton announced his plans to revisit the childhood tale of Alice in Wonderland, many felt it was a good fit for the director of such twisted films as Edward Scissorhands and Sweeney Tood: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. As far as children's tales go, Lewis Carroll's LSD-induced story is one of the more fanciful in existence, and has always been a prime target for an even darker interpretation (partially because of American McGee's successful manipulation of the material).

Anchor Bay Entertainment has announced After.Life for release on Blu-ray on August 3. This horror/thriller movie stars Christina Ricci as a young woman who has a car accident and wakes up to find the local funeral director (Liam Neeson) preparing her body for her funeral. It got a very limited theatrical release in April.

Vigilante Announced on Blu-ray

Blue Underground has announced the 1983 exploitation movie Vigilante for release on Blu-ray on September 21. The movie will be presented in a "pristine" new 2K transfer from the original uncut and uncensored camera negative. It will also be the studio's first title to be enhanced for D-Box motion control systems.

U2 360º at the Rose Bowl Super Deluxe Edition, with Blu-ray

In two days, Interscope Records will release U2: 360° at the Rose Bowl, presenting the next-to-last gig of the band's U2360° Tour in support of their album No Line on The Horizon. A Super Deluxe Edition, also including the BD (as well as plenty of collectibles), is coming out on June 22.

Original King Kong Gets September Blu-ray Date

The Eighth Wonder of the World is coming up in high definition. On September 28, Warner Home Video will release the classic action/adventure movie King Kong, in a Blu-ray DigiBook edition. The feature will include all the scenes cut from the re-releases, presenting the 1933 version in its entirety.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced A Prophet for release on Blu-ray on August 3. This taut prison drama, directed by French filmmaker Jacques Audiard, won the Grand Prize of the Jury at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated to the Oscars in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced The Last Song for release on a Blu-ray/DVD combo edition on August 17. The Last Song is a coming-of-age love story, based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks and starring Miley Cyrus in a departure from her famous Hannah Montana persona. It is set in a small Southern beach town where father and daughter reconnect with the help of their shared love for music.

Four MGM Movies on Blu-ray in August

According to early retailer information, MGM Home Entertainment will release four catalog titles on August 3: the feature debut of the Coen brothers Blood Simple; the sports romance Bull Durham; the John Carpenter/Kurt Russell cult favorite Escape from New York; and Kalifornia, featuring Brad Pitt in a memorable role as a serial killer. All titles will also include the DVD of the movie.

Independent studio AnimEigo is entering the Blu-ray arena with the release of Shogun Assassin: 30th Anniversary Collector's Edition, which will hit store shelves on August 24. Shogun Assassin is a US-made condensation of the first two films in the Lone Wolf and Cub series of Japanese movies, themselves based on a long-running manga series of the same title.

On October 26, Warner Home Video, in association with Lucasfilm Ltd., will release Star Wars: The Clone Wars, The Complete Season Two. This four-disc set will include all 22 episodes from Season Two, featuring bounty hunters, space pirates, giant monsters, mind-controlling brain worms and the return of Boba Fett. It will also include a 64-page production journal with concept designs, original sketches and notes from Supervising Director Dave Filoni.
