Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Trailer, One-sheet Up

Warner Bros has revealed the teaser trailer and poster for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the much-anticipated seventh and final adventure in the Harry Potter film series, to be told in two full-length parts. Heading the cast, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson reprise their roles as Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.

New ES Sony Blu-ray Player and Receivers

Sony Electronics has announced its new products from the Elevated Standard (ES) series, including a 3D-compatible Blu-ray player, model BDP-S1700ES, and three AV receivers, models STR-DA5600ES, STRA-DA4600ES and STR-DA3600ES, as well as a non-ES receiver, model STR-DN2010. ES products will no longer be offered for sale online or through telesales.

CyberLink Releases PowerDVD 10 ULTRA 3D Mark II

CyberLink Corp. has announced PowerDVD 10 ULTRA 3D Mark II release to the retail and online market. This enables Blu-ray 3D movie playback on desktop, notebook and All-in-One PCs. It also comes with Enhanced TrueTheater 3D for converting existing 2D DVD titles and 2D videos into a 3D movie experience. PowerDVD is the first software player to receive Blu-ray 3D certification from the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA).

Complete Grindhouse Blu-ray Rumors Resurface

Filmmaker Edgar Wright, who directed one of the fake trailers embedded in Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's Grindhouse, posted yesterday on his Twitter account that he's soon going to record a commentary for that trailer, and added: "Some of you will know what that means is finally happening" – namely, that a release of the Grindhouse theatrical experience is around the corner.

Thomas & Friends First Blu-ray Announced

Lionsgate Home Entertainment, in conjunction with HIT Entertainment, has announced that it will release the all-new CG animated adventure Thomas & Friends: Misty Island Rescue as a Blu-ray/DVD combo edition on September 7. This title marks the first time Thomas is available on BD, and makes it one of the first Preschool properties to launch into the format.

Anchorman Blu-ray in August, Best Buy Exclusive

Paramount Home Entertainment is set to release the Will Ferrell comedy Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy on Blu-ray on August 31, as a Best Buy exclusive. This two-disc "Rich Mahogany Edition" will include both the theatrical version and an "unrated, uncut and uncalled for" version.

Lionsgate Announces Delicatessen, The Third Man on Blu-ray

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that it will release two films on Blu-ray on September 14 as part of its StudioCanal Collection: Delicatessen (Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro, 1991); and The Third Man (Carol Reed, 1949), which had previously been released by Criterion in a now out of print edition. Both will be presented in 1080p video with 2.0 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks.

Warner Home Video has announced The Hangover: Extreme Hangover Edition for release on Blu-ray on October 12. This re-release of the R-rated sleeper hit of 2009 contains an exclusive, never-before-seen 28-page wedding album featuring missing photos from the ill-fated Vegas wedding and more incriminating photos from the lost camera that you couldn't see in theaters, as well as new BD-Live content. SRP is $49.99.

Warner Home Video, in conjunction with New Line Home Entertainment, has announced that it will release Elf: Ultimate Collector's Edition on October 26. This holiday tin, priced at $49.99 SRP, will include the Blu-ray edition released in 2008, along with a 5-track soundtrack CD sampler, a 14" plush Elf holiday stocking, 15 gift tag stickers and a 5x7" magnetic Elf picture frame with 4x6" magnet.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced The Square for Blu-ray release on August 24. This "twist-filled" neo-noir Australian thriller centers on an adulterous couple whose scheming leads to arson, blackmail and murder. US distributor Apparition gave it a very limited release last April.

Vivendi Visual Entertainment has announced Fanboys for Blu-ray release on July 27. This comedy about a group of Star Wars fans who plan to break into George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch was one of the productions from The Weinstein Company that didn't get a Blu-ray release in 2009 (another was Outlander, which came out on Blu-ray last May).

It had become a habit: every time an HBO title was announced on Blu-ray, enthusiasts snapped back: "But where is Deadwood?". Well, the answer might be coming closer, as Deadwood: The Complete Series just came up for preorder. This 13-disc box set will reportedly include all 36 episodes from the series, in 1080p video with DTS-HD Master Audio sound.

Big Four of Thrash Metal Live Blu-ray in September

The "Big Four" of 1980s thrash metal - Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax — played together for the first time this year as part of the Sonisphere festival. A Blu-ray is set to be released in September showcasing the entire concert they held on June 22 in Sofia, Bulgaria: two hours of Metallica, and one hour each of Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax.

Kino International has announced Ajami for Blu-ray release on August 24. This Israeli film is set in Jaffa's Ajami neighborhood, a melting pot of cultures and conflicting views among Jews, Muslims and Christians. It premiered at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the 2010 Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Film category.

Criterion Hints at Sweet Smell of Success, Night of the Hunter

In its Facebook page, The Criterion Collection has posted a photograph that shows a classic movie being prepared for Blu-ray release: Sweet Smell of Success (Alexander Mackendrick, 1957). Previously, the studio's newsletter had featured a picture probably hinting at the release of The Night of the Hunter (Charles Laughton, 1955). Both films come from the United Artists library and hence have apparently been licensed to Criterion by MGM. No street date or release details are available.

Anchor Bay Home Entertainment has announced Solitary Man for Blu-ray release on September 7. This drama starring Michael Douglas (along with Mary-Louise Parker and Jenna Fisher, with Susan Sarandon and Danny DeVito) got a 81% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes when it had a limited theatrical release in May.

Superman/Batman Apocalypse Blu-ray Announced

Warner Home Video has announced Superman/Batman: Apocalypse for release on Blu-ray on September 28. This direct-to-video animated feature (the ninth of the DC Universe Animated Original Movies) is based on Jeff Loeb's popular mini-series from the Superman/Batman comic books. A digital copy will be included.

Warner's The Book of Eli was again the top-selling title on Blu-ray, according to data from Nielsen VideoScan First Alert for the week ended June 27. Universal's Green Zone came in a close second. Meanwhile, Disney's Toy Story and Toy Story 2 jumped to third and fourth place respectively, propelled by the theatrical release of Toy Story 3. Update: sales charts and figures added.

Digital Playground Boss Believes in Blu-ray Endurance, Cautiously Supports 3D

During an interview with the technology site ConceivablyTech, adult entertainment baron Joone said that Digital Playground will support 3D, although he reckons that the format is still two or three years away from mass penetration. He also remarked that Blu-ray sales are increasing steadily, and that there is "no reason to believe Blu-ray Disc will die anytime soon."

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced Just Wright for Blu-ray release on September 14. This PG-rated romantic sports film from Fox Searchlight stars Queen Latifah as a physical therapist who falls for the NBA star she's working with (played by rapper Common). A digital copy will be included with the Blu-ray.

Onkyo Announces Two 3D-compatible AV Receivers

Onkyo has announced two new high-end, 3D-compatible network A/V receivers with HDMI 1.4a, models TX-NR5008 and TX-NR3008. Both receivers support network audio streaming, various multi-room set-ups, and iPhone/iPod playback over USB. Both have achieved THX Ultra2 Plus certification. They will be available in August. List prices are $2,099 for the TX-NR3008 and $2,699 for the TX-NR5008.

Cine Asia has announced Force of Five (5 huajai hero) for release on Blu-ray in the UK on July 5. This "jaw-dropping action-adventure packed with non-stop Muay Thai martial arts mayhem" was also recently released in the US under the title Power Kids - although, unlike the Magnolia release, this won't include an English dub, only Thai in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and Dolby Digital 2.0.

Film adaptations of popular children's novels are often risky business for Hollywood studios – for every Harry Potter, there is an Eragon. Even the insanely popular The Chronicles of Narnia was subject to a studio switch and budget slash in order to keep hope alive. Today, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is released on Blu-ray, a title that (after received mixed reviews and mediocre box office take) seems to be teetering between receiving a sequel and being abandoned by the studio. For fans, this Blu-ray release may be the only way to get the next book in the series adapted for the silver screen.

Vivendi Visual Entertainment has announced four horror movies from the Weinstein/Dimension library for release on Blu-ray in the lead-up to the Halloween horror viewing season. The studio will release Pulse on September 7, Feast on September 14, Prey on September 28 and Black Christmas (the 2006 remake) on October 19. Edition details and special features have not been detailed.

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too? for August 31. This comedy-drama sequel, written, co-produced, starring and directed by Tyler Perry, was poorly reviewed, but went on to earn a respectable $60 million at the box office - $5m more than the first Married movie (unreleased on Blu-ray).

Directed by William Lustig and featuring landmark gore effects by Tom Savini, this relentlessly shocking and disturbing film was originally censored all over the world due to its graphic violence. Blue Underground presents it in a new 2K transfer from the original uncut and uncensored negative, with hours of brand new extras.
