Just one week after the
Oppo BDP-80 was discontinued (see Blu-ray.com,
September 22), now it is the turn for the upper-end and highly successful
BDP-83 to be retired. It is no longer available for purchase on the Oppo official website, which displays the message: "Due to a shortage of major components, we have ceased production of this model." Oppo anticipates releasing its replacement, the 3D, Netflix-compatible model
BDP-93, by the end of the year, "with November being our goal."
As previously reported (see Blu-ray.com,
September 23), the BDP-93 will have all the functionalities of the 83, plus Blu-ray 3D support (with dual HDMI outputs), Netflix and CinemaNow streaming, wireless-N networking, and an eSATA port.
The Flagship model
BDP-83SE is still available for now, but is likely to suffer the same fate in the near future.
