Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Fox Launches Live Extras with Percy Jackson Blu-ray

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will expand its use of BD-Live with the Live Extras program, with the release of Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, which streets today. Consumers that purchase the disc will be able to access exclusive never-before-seen clips via their network connected Blu-ray player and BD-Live. Other recent new releases from the studio will also get Live Extras.

Warner Home Video has announced two classic movies starring Humphrey Bogart and directed by John Huston for release on Blu-ray on October 5: the 1941 detective story The Maltese Falcon, based on a novel by Dashiell Hammett, and the 1947 anti-heroic adventure The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

Public Voting Open for 2010 HD Awards

Home Media Magazine has presented the Third Annual High-Def Awards, which is now open to consumer voting through July 30. Nominees in nine categories have been selected among all titles released during 2009 on Blu-ray by a panel of judges, based on the complete treatment, including program content, bonus materials, packaging, and picture and audio quality.

July 3, 1985 was the premiere of Robert Zemeckis's hugely successful Back to the Future. Today, almost twenty-five years later, Universal Studios Home Entertainment has officially announced the Blu-ray release of Back to the Future: 25th Anniversary Trilogy for October 26, confirming early information from European retailers. This edition will be newly-restored and offer more than two hours of new bonus features.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced two catalog titles for release on Blu-ray on September 7: The Who's rock opera Tommy; and the 1967 crime movie In Cold Blood, based on Truman Capote's world-famous non-fiction novel and previously available only as part of a double feature with the biopic Capote.

Twilight Zone Season 1 Blu-ray Detailed

Image Entertainment has revealed the release details for The Twilight Zone: Season 1, slated for Blu-ray release on September 14. This edition has been mastered from new 1080p film transfers using the original camera negatives and magnetic soundtracks (rather than recycling the HD masters they already had on hand from the 2004 Definitive DVD Collection). Special features will include all the content from the Definitive Collection, plus new commentaries, interviews, isolated scores and more.

BDA Approves 100/128GB BDXL Disc Specs

Today, the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) announced the finalization and release of the specifications for BDXL, the new multi-layer recordable Blu-ray Disc format with up to 128GB of capacity. It is targeted primarily at commercial segments such as broadcasting, medical and document imaging enterprises with significant archiving needs. BDXL will be offered as write-once and rewritable 100GB (triple-layer) discs, and write-once 128GB (quadruple-layer) discs.

Del Toro's Cronos Criterion Blu-ray Coming Soon

Yesterday, director Guillermo del Toro attended the 36th Annual Saturn Awards and gave a 20-minute impromptu interview backstage. More Sir Ridley news from France: according to information from French retailers, the SPHE/TF1 home video joint venture will release the Christopher Columbus biopic 1492: Conquest of Paradise on Blu-ray on October 6 (the same day as the Alien Anthology and one week before Robin Hood). There are no edition details available at this time.

French site Planete HD is reporting that the local branch of Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced that one of the most eagerly awaited catalog releases of this fall, the Alien Anthology, will be released there on Blu-ray on October 6. Megadeth Live Blu-ray Announced

On September 7, Shout! Factory will release Megadeth: Rust in Peace Live, recorded on March 31 at the Hollywood Palladium, on the final night of Megadeth's historic month-long Rust In Peace 20th anniversary tour. This Blu-ray will feature all tracks from that album, including all-time classics "Holy Wars...The Punishment Due" and "Hangar 18," as well as fan favorites from various other Megadeth releases such as "Symphony For Destruction," "Peace Sells," and "Skin O' My Teeth."

Blu-ray Sales, June 14-20: Eli Has a Best-seller

The post-apocalyptic movie The Book of Eli was the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended June 20, according to Nielsen VideoScan. The Book of Eli got 35% of its total disc sales from the BD version. Avatar bounced back to second place, while last week's top-selling title, Alice in Wonderland, dropped to third place.

For the first time, Warner Home Video is giving a Blu-ray release to a half-hour sitcom, with the announcement of The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Third Season, with a street date of September 14. This two-disc set will include the 23 episodes of season 3 of this successful CBS-aired comedy series about "eggheads and their hottie neighbor."

Warner Home Video has announced that, on August 3, it will release Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music (40th Anniversary Edition). This Blu-ray edition, previously available only at Wal-Mart, includes the two discs from the Ultimate Collector's Edition, but without the collectibles. Warner Home Video, in conjunction with New Line Home Entertainment, has announced that, on September 14, it will release on Blu-ray the three The Lord of the Ring movies separately: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. Disc contents are the same as in The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy, except that no digital copies are included.

Park Circus has announced the "deliriously romantic and contemporary" 1951 movie Pandora and the Flying Dutchman, by maverick filmmaker Albert Lewin, for release on Blu-ray on August 9, in a BD/DVD dual-format 2-disc edition. Working from a nitrate separation positive and other sources, George Eastman House has supervised a painstaking 35mm restoration of the film, bringing back the rich palette of deep, sensuous Technicolor hues utilized by renowned cinematographer Jack Cardiff.

Vizio announced today three wireless Blu-ray players (model numbers VBR210, VBR220 and VBR231) with Internet Apps, capable of streaming content from online services such as VUDU, Netflix and Pandora. The players also deliver access to other well-known online services, such as the Associated Press. All of them also support Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD audio formats, and include a USB port for JPEG and MP3 playback.

Deluxe Surpasses 100 Million BD-Live Connections

Deluxe Digital Studios announced today that it has registered over 100 million BD-Live disc inserts and forecasts this number to nearly double by the end of 2010. The actual BD-Live usage data shows 60% was from North America, 35% from Europe, and 5% from the rest of the world.

Warner Home Video has announced The Exorcist for release on October 5, in a two-disc Digibook edition, packaged with a personal letter written by director William Friedkin inside a 40-page booklet. Both the extended director's cut and the theatrical version of this 1973 horror masterpiece will be included, remastered from the original camera negative. Three new documentaries, produced by acclaimed documentarian Laurent Bouzereau, are also included exclusively in the Blu-ray edition.

This British crime thriller/revenge story, starring Michael Caine, got a limited theatrical release in April, and was described by film critic Roger Ebert as being "poised somewhere between Death Wish and Gran Torino."
