Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Anchor Bay Home Entertainment has announced Frozen for Blu-ray release on September 28. In this thriller movie, directed by Adam Green (Hatchet), a typical day on the slopes turns into an ice-cold nightmare as three snowboarders get stranded on a ski chairlift at night.

Samsung Launches 3 New Blu-ray Players

Samsung is putting three new Blu-ray players on the market, under model numbers BD-C5900, BD-C6800 and BD-C7900, competitively priced at MSRPs ranging from $229.99 to $399.99. Availability dates have not been announced. Like the BD-C6900, announced early this year, all three will be compatible with the Blu-ray 3D specification.

The Peacemaker Announced on Blu-ray

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced The Peacemaker for Blu-ray release on September 21. This 1997 action thriller, starring Nicole Kidman and George Clooney, was the first live-action production from Dreamworks SKG, but it didn't live up to its blockbuster aspirations, with a box office gross of only $41 million.

American Beauty Sapphire Series Blu-ray Announced

Confirming earlier retailer reports, Paramount Home Entertainment has announced American Beauty for Blu-ray release on September 21, as part of the Sapphire Series. This Dreamworks SKG production, which was the directorial debut for Sam Mendes, went on to win five Oscars in 2000 (Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Cinematography, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director and Best Picture).

Letters to Juliet Out on Flipper Blu-ray in September

Summit Entertainment has announced that it will release the romantic movie Letters to Juliet, starring Amanda Seyfried, on September 14. Like other recent day-and-date releases from Summit, this title will come out on a two-sided Blu-ray combo, with BD on one side and DVD on the other.

New Entertainment Media has announced Dorian Gray for Blu-ray release on August 24. This "passionate and Gothic" retelling of Oscar Wilde's classic novel stars Ben Barnes (Prince Caspian from the eponymous Chronicles of Narnia second installment) and Colin Firth.

Inception Media Enters Blu-ray, Announces 2:22

Independent distributor Inception Media Group (no relation with Christopher Nolan) is entering the Blu-ray arena with the announcement of 2:22, slated for Blu-ray release on August 24. This heist movie, starring Mick Rossi and Val Kilmer, screened at film festivals in 2008 and 2009 but never saw a theatrical release.

The Experiment Announced on Blu-ray for September

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced the psychological thriller The Experiment. This film, co-written and directed by Prison Break creator Paul Schering and starring Adrien Brody and Forest Whitaker, is a remake of a 2001 German film of the same title about an experiment simulating prison life that goes out of control. A limited theatrical release was initially planned for late 2010, but instead the studio will drop it direct-to-BD on September 21.

Cult Epics Enters Blu-ray with Metzger's Score

Specialty label Cult Epics has announced that it is entering the Blu-ray arena with Radley Metzger's 1970s erotic cult film Score, a tale of a couple of swingers who make a bet that they can seduce a couple of naive newlyweds. The BD will include both the theatrical and uncut versions of the film.

Disney Close to Miramax Sale

Walt Disney Company has reportedly reached an agreement in principle to sell Miramax Films and its 611-film library to construction executive Ron Tutor; a formal announcement is expected within the month. For the first year, Walt Disney Studios will distribute its movies until a new distribution operation has been formed. Overseas distribution is expected to be handled by Morgan Creek.

3D Movie Playback for the PS3 in September

As previously reported, the PlayStation 3 is receiving 3D support in several stages: game support came first, thanks to firmware version 3.30 (released in April), while 3D Blu-ray movie playback was scheduled later in the year. Now a more specific timeframe has been revealed: this update will be ready in September.

Optimum Home Entertainment has announced the Spanish psychological thriller Hierro for release on Blu-ray on July 26. Hierro is the feature debut of Gabe Ibáñez and stars Elena Anaya as a young woman who, while traveling by ferry to the island of El Hierro, loses her young son. No special features have been listed.

BFI Announces August Blu-ray Wave

The British Film Institute (BFI) has announced that, on August 23, it will release the work of four great British directors in high definition: The Edge of the World (Michael Powell, 1937), The Innocents (Jack Clayton, 1961), Loving Memory (Tony Scott, 1970), and A Zed And Two Noughts (Peter Greenaway, 1985). Previously unavailable on home video, Loving Memory is the directorial debut from one of Hollywood's most bankable UK ex-pats, Tony Scott, made when he was just 26.

Kevin Smith Maximized for Cop Out Blu-ray

During a recent roundtable interview, Kevin Smith spoke about the upcoming Blu-ray release of Cop Out (street date July 20) and especially about Warner Bros' Maximum Movie Mode (redubbed Maximum Comedy Mode for this title). The MCM features trivia, outtakes, interviews and other bonuses, but the main attraction is Smith cracking jokes at everything – including himself.

Extended Avatar Gets Theatrical Release

Twentieth Century Fox and James Cameron officially announced that Avatar: Special Edition will be released in theaters August 27, in a limited engagement and exclusively in Digital 3D and IMAX 3D. This version of Cameron's epic Avatar will include more than eight minutes of new footage. No comment was made on an eventual Special Edition Blu-ray release, let alone if it would include a 3D version.

Rumor: Finding Nemo, Toy Story 3 Blu-ray in November

Ultimate Disney is reporting that Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment is expected to release the Pixar film Finding Nemo on Blu-ray on November 9, coinciding with the Blu-ray street date of Pixar's latest production, Toy Story 3. Nemo will reportedly come out on a BD/DVD combo, whereas Toy Story 3 will be available on single Blu-ray and a 2D BD/3D BD/DVD/Digital Copy pack.

A family movie outselling an R-rated comedy and a horror film isn't unheard of on DVD, but it definitely is news on Blu-ray. Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief was the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended July 4, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert, moving nearly 50% more copies than Hot Tub Time Machine, and over twice as much as The Crazies. Update: sales figures added.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced 30 Days of Night: Dark Days for release on Blu-ray on October 5, in a two-disc BD/DVD combo edition. This direct-to-video thriller, based on the second book in the graphic novel series created by Steve Niles, takes place a year after the events of 30 Days of Night.

Evil Dead Blu-ray Detailed

Anchor Bay Entertainment has revealed the full details for the Blu-ray release of Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead, which as previously reported will come out on August 31. The BD will include not one, but two new HD transfers (one in 1.85:1 and the other in the original, director-composed 1.33:1), personally supervised by Raimi, accompanied by a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio track.

In late 2009, when Warner Home Video released Natural Born Killers: Unrated Director's Cut, it stayed at a relatively high price for a very long time, never dropping below $17. Last Sunday, it finally fell to $12.99 at Amazon. Mere days later, Deep Discount has gone even farther and is offering this Oliver Stone film for only $11.58.

An early announcement to retailers indicates that MPI Home Video will release The Killer Inside Meon September 28. This neo-noir thriller, based on a pulp novel by Jim Thompson and directed by the versatile Michael Winterbottom, drew a heated controversy when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival (and later at Berlin) because of its graphic violence.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has revealed the release details for The Simpsons: The Thirteenth Season, which, as previously reported, will hit store shelves on August 24. Apart from other features, the Blu-ray release also includes "specially created menus" with additional animation that does not appear on the DVD.

It's not that often that retailers offer sales on anime on Blu-ray, so they are worth mentioning when they do happen. Best Buy's ad for the week of July 4-10 features many of the titles from the FUNimation catalog at discounts of over 50% off MSRP, in most cases at their lowest prices ever. Shortly after, Amazon matched those prices.

French independent studio Carlotta has announced its Blu-ray slate for late 2010. It prominently includes Rainer Werner Fassbinder's made-for-TV science-fiction film World on a Wire (Welt am Draht, 1973), as well as three films directed by Frank Borzage: 7th Heaven (1927), Street Angel (1928) and Lucky Star (1929).
