Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Warner Lowers Catalog Blu-ray Pricing, Starting with The Long Kiss Goodnight

Warner Home Video has announced The Long Kiss Goodnight for January 11, 2011. This action movie from New Line Pictures, starring Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson, will be the first to carry the studio's "great new price for 2011!" of $19.98 (SRP), $5 less than the price that WHV had been applying to non-DigiBook catalog Blu-ray titles this year.

Alice in Wonderland, Bolt 3D Blu-ray Exclusively Bundled with Sony TVs

Confirming earlier reports, Walt Disney Studios has announced that the 3D Blu-ray version of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland will be exclusively available with Sony 3D displays this holiday season. Consumers who buy select Sony 3D BRAVIA HDTVs will have a choice between Alice or the animated movie Bolt on Blu-ray 3D.

Blu-ray Sales, August 23-29: Lost Finds Buyers (Update)

ABC's mindbending TV series Lost dominated the Blu-ray sales week ended August 29, according to Nielsen VideoScan. Not only did Lost: The Complete Sixth and Final Season and Lost: The Complete Collection take first and second place in the charts, but also half of all buyers of The Complete Collection went for the high-def version. Toshiba Announces 3D Blu-ray Player (Update)

Toshiba has announced its first 3D-compatible Blu-ray player, model BDX3100KE. This player supports the HDMI 1.4 specification, and decodes all advanced audio codecs. Other details will be revealed later. Official price has been set at an inexpensive 199 euros. The Japanese CE manufacturer will also be showing 3D LCD TVs from its Series WL768, as well as its "Cell TV." Update: photos added.

This Week on Blu-ray - September 7-13

As soon as I received my Blu-ray copy of The Office: Season Six, I popped in disc one so that I could watch "Niagra" (aka "the wedding episode"). Even though I had seen it many times before, the episode is so encompassing of what makes The Office so great, that it serves – at least for me – as the perfect ending for the award-winning series. Of course, it's not the end, and the series marches on (even, reportedly, without star Steve Carell who plans depart after season seven), but I'm not sure writers will be able to replace the Jim/Pam drama with anything as engaging. The remainder of season six felt lazy in comparison to previous seasons, and they definitely have a lot to prove going into season seven.

E1 Entertainment has announced Night of the Demons for Blu-ray release on October 19. This "demon-filled, blood-soaked" remake of the 1988 cult classic, follows a bunch of young party animals who spend Halloween night in a haunted mansion, turning into demons and mutilating themselves and their friends.

QOL Makes Its First 3D Blu-ray

French disc replicator QOL (Europe's first independent BD maker) has manufactured its first 3D Blu-ray, a demonstration disc featuring HD footage of the latest Roland Garros French Open tennis tournament, as well as excerpts of Jean Michel Jarre's 2010 World Tour. The disc was commissioned by Panasonic France, and 3D authoring and encoding have been performed by Mastery International Pictures.

Panasonic Announces 3D Blu-ray Home Theater Systems (Update 2)

Panasonic has announced the debut of its first Full-HD 3D Blu-ray Disc home theater systems, with two models unveiled: SC-BTT750 and SC-BTT350. Both are compatible with Viera Cast, Netflix, Amazon Video on Demand, YouTube, Picasa, Bloomberg TV, weather information and other services. Both will be available in September. Keaton's Sherlock Jr and Three Ages on Blu-ray

On November 16, Kino Video will release a Buster Keaton double feature, comprised of Sherlock Jr (1924) -about a theater projectionist turned amateur sleuth- and Three Ages (1923) - a slapstick parody of D.W.Griffith's Intolerance. Each will be presented with three different music tracks.

Daughters of Darkness Blu-ray in December

Blue Underground has announced Daughters of Darkness for Blu-ray release on December 21. This 1971 erotic vampire movie will be presented in its uncensored director's cut, with 1080p 1.66:1 video and monoaural DTS-HD Master Audio sound. Extras are the same as those included in the two-disc special edition DVD released in 2006.

SteelBook Blu-ray Wave in Canada

On November 2, Alliance Films is will re-release ten Blu-ray titles from its catalog using SteelBook packaging: A History of Violence, Hot Fuzz, Kill Bill: Volume 1, Kill Bill: Volume 2, Law Abiding Citizen, Memento, Pan's Labyrinth, Shaun of the Dead, Sin City, and Traffic. Disc details are the same as for the existing Blu-ray editions in conventional packaging.

Ice Age 3 and Coraline 3D Blu-ray out - in Panasonic 3D Starter Kit

The 3D Blu-ray versions of Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Coraline 3D, previously offered only to buyers of Panasonic 3D HDTVs, are now available to all - but there's a catch. They can only be bought as part of the Panasonic 3D Essential Pack, which also includes two pairs of active shutter glasses.

This Saturday, Amazon has an interesting Blu-ray related deal of the day: up to midnight PST, you can order Rocky: The Undisputed Collection on Blu-ray for only $32.99 (53% off MSRP). This works out to a little over $5 per Rocky movie. The price history for this box set shows that this is the cheapest it has been (even $5 lower than a previous deal of the day in February).

Babies Blu-ray Out Exclusively at Target

The feature-length documentary Babies, following four babies from around the world for the first year of their lives, which was originally announced for September 28, is already available to buy on Blu-ray, albeit only at Target (both online and in stores). HDI Dune has announced HDI Dune Pro, the company's new upscale high-definition media center and the first product to feature HDI Dune Home Technology, a Connected Home Services platform that allows home monitoring, media management, and control of all networked cameras, thermostats, lights, etc. from the television. HDI Dune Pro is the world's first Blu-ray player to support Connected Home Services. It will be available at the end of October, with an MSRP of 1,990 euros.

Confirmed: Avatar 3D Blu-ray Panasonic Exclusive

Panasonic marketing executives have confirmed to TWICE that the electronics maker will be the exclusive launch partner of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment for the 3D Blu-ray Disc release of Avatar in "early December." Thus, the 3D BD of James Cameron's sci-fi epic will only be available to buyers of a Panasonic 3D Viera plasma TV.

Inception Blu-ray Dated in the UK

According to retailer information, Christopher Nolan's mindbending thriller Inception will be released on Blu-ray in the UK on December 6, in a "triple play" (BD/DVD/Digital Copy) combo pack. Special features will reportedly include WB's Maximum Movie Mode, a first for a Nolan film. Also available will be a very enticing Limited Edition Briefcase with five movie art cards, a spinning top and a booklet – which is actually the user manual for the PASIV (Portable Automated Somnacin IntraVenous) device used in the movie.

Unlike the US, Britain will also get a full-series box set, Heroes: The Complete Collection, including seasons 1 through 4 of this acclaimed series, and an exclusive bonus disc with over 90 minutes of new featurettes unseen in any other Heroes release.

Samsung Announces 3D Lineup (Update: Videos and Photos Inside)

At its IFA press conference, Samsung said that it will launch six new 3D Blu-ray systems during the second half of 2010, including the first 3D Blu-ray player with digital video recording option. The Korean CE manufacturer is bullish on 3D and is adding seven new 3D TVs to its lineup, and a 3D projector. It also confirmed that it would offer this year's Dreamworks 3D titles bundled with Samsung 3D hardware. Update: booth photos added.

Eureka Entertainment has officially announced Metropolis on Blu-ray for November 22. This "reconstructed and restored" version of Fritz Lang's silent classic (including 25 minutes of footage previously thought lost to the world) will be presented in two editions: a single-disc Blu-ray edition with "wraparound embossed sleeve", and a Dual Format SteelBook.

Report: Lion King 3D Blu-ray, Beauty and the Beast 3D Blu-ray in 2011

According to a "knowledgeable source" quoted by Hollywoodinhidef, Walt Disney Studios is converting The Lion King to 3D with a view to a 3D Blu-ray release in the fall of 2011 (coinciding with the advertised Diamond Edition Blu-ray). Beauty and the Beast is already converted, and could also get a 3D Blu-ray release in late 2011, after a 3D theatrical re-release earlier that year.

Shout! Factory has officially announced that it will release Warren Miller's Dynasty on a Blu-ray/DVD combo on October 12. This documentary celebrates 60 years of filmmaking of acclaimed ski/snowboarding documentarian Warren Miller. Audio will be presented in Dolby TrueHD. Special features have not been listed at the time.

Sony Announces 3D Lineup

"The 3D train is moving forward, speedily and steadily, like China's Harmony Express. And Sony clearly has the strongest engine in this 3D express." Sir Howard Stringer, CEO of Sony Corporation, said enthusiastically at the press conference of Sony Europe at IFA 2010. As Sony is aggressively blazing the trail in every part of the 3D universe, its hour-long press conference was held entirely in 3D.

PS3 to Get 3D Blu-ray Upgrade in October

During the Sony press event at IFA, Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer revealed that the firmware upgrade to enable the PlayStation 3 to play back 3D Blu-ray movies will finally be available in October, a month later than the latest estimate. 3D for games had been implemented in April, with firmware version 3.30.

Epson Says 3D Projection Is “Not Ready”

During its IFA press conference, Epson (the number-one projector brand worldwide and in the US) surprised many by informing that it wasn't announcing any 3D projectors at this year's fair, saying that neither the technology nor the market nor the content were ready for a product launch. Epson focused instead on a new, improved 2D projection technology.
