Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Black Friday Predictions: Blu-ray Players with Netflix at $69, Movies at $5-$10

A Black Friday forecast from deal reporting site Dealnews predicts that Netflix-enabled Blu-ray players (a "must-have item" this year) will hit $69. Less full-featured BD players are expected to hit $49. On the software side, the site forecasts that older titles will be available for $5, whereas "relatively new releases" will be found for as little as $10. Blu-ray movies bundled with TVs are also expected.

Toshiba Announces 3D Blu-ray Player and 3D HDTV

Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc. is launching Blu-ray player model BDX3000, its first BD player compatible with the Blu-ray 3D specification. It also has Wi-Fi capability and supports streaming content from various providers. No software bundles (exclusive or not) have been announced. The company also announced the release of the WX800 Cinema Series 3D LED HDTVs, in 55" and 46" sizes.

Se7en Non-DigiBook Blu-ray Exclusively at Walmart

David Fincher's thriller Se7en came out on Blu-ray, and is generally available in a DigiBook edition. However, without any warning, an exclusive non-DigiBook edition simultaneously hit the shelves of retail giant Walmart, which is selling it this week for $20. At the moment, this edition is available in stores only, and there is no information as to the length of this exclusivity deal.

Toy Story 3 Announced on Blu-ray in the UK

The UK branch of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced that it will release Pixar's Toy Story 3 on November 22, in two editions that will differ slightly from the recently announced US editions: a "Double Play" 2 BD/DVD pack, and a "Triple Play" 2BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo. A 3-Movie Collection containing all three Toy Story will also be released - this one with no DVDs or digital copies at all.

The Evil Dead UK Blu-ray Announced

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that it will release The Evil Dead on Blu-ray in the UK on October 11. Edition details are similar to the US release, with the major addition of a Picture-in-Picture track covering the legacy of this cult movie. On the other hand, picture aspect ratio is only listed as 1.85:1.

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been a huge success for Disney, though its commercial appeal was almost universally questions prior to the first film's release. In hindsight, this may have been a contributing factor to the film's grand success – no one saw it coming! Conversely, when Disney was planning the release of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, the was already talk of a trilogy and comparisons to Pirates, which at the end of the day, never happened.

Report: PS3 Won’t Support 3D Blu-ray and BD-J at the Same Time

The PlayStation 3 is getting 3D Blu-ray playback support in October, but a recent report indicates that the console's 3D BD capability will be somewhat limited. Specifically, the BD-J application environment will reportedly not be supported during Stereoscopic Output Mode. Therefore, to ensure smooth playback on the PS3, 3D BD titles will allegedly have to be authored to work around that hurdle, using the less refined HDMV instead of BD-J if needed.

The Last Airbender Blu-ray Announced

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced the action/adventure movie The Last Airbender, directed by M. Night Shyamalan, for Blu-ray release on November 16, in two editions: a two-disc BD/DVD Digital Copy combo pack and a single-disc Blu-ray. It will feature "over two hours of in-depth, behind-the-scenes special features" (albeit most of them on the combo only). Although this movie was shown theatrically in 3D (converted in post-production from native 2D), no 3D Blu-ray edition has been announced as of yet.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced The Kids are All Right for Blu-ray release on November 16. This independent comedy/drama from Focus Features (not to be mistaken with The Kids Are Alright), starring Annette Bening and Julianne Moore, was acclaimed by critics and audience alike at the latest Sundance Film Festival, and has a 96% Fresh rating on Rottentomatoes.com.

I'm Still Here Blu-ray Announced

Magnolia Home Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray release of I'm Still Here, with a street date of November 23. This documentary/mockumentary, directed by Casey Affleck, follows Joaquin Phoenix as he announces his retirement from acting in the fall of 2008 and sets off to reinvent himself as a hip hop musician. It premiered at the Venice Film Festival, and had a limited US theatrical release last Friday.

Clips from Twilight Zone Season 1 Blu-ray

Today is the street date for the Blu-ray edition of The Twilight Zone: Season 1. As previously reported, this edition has been mastered from new 1080p film transfers using the original camera negatives and magnetic soundtracks. To promote this release, Image Entertainment has made available some video clips, including an excerpt from Rod Serling's network pitch, and a clip from episode "Time Enough at Last."

Magnolia Home Entertainment has announced Countdown to Zero for Blu-ray release on November 23. This documentary traces the history of the atomic bomb from its origins to the present state of global affairs and makes a case for worldwide nuclear disarmament. It features several important international statesmen, including President Jimmy Carter, Mikhail Gorbachev, Pervez Musharraf and Tony Blair.

The Extra Man Announced on Blu-ray

Magnolia Home Entertainment has announced The Extra Man for Blu-ray release on November 16. This comedy, directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini (American Splendor) and based on a novel by Jonathan Ames, stars Kevin Kline, Paul Dano, John C. Reilly and Katie Holmes. It premiered at Sundance Film Festival and had a limited theatrical release in July.

Toy Story 3 Blu-ray Officially Announced

Confirming early retailer reports, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has officially announced the latest and hugely successful Pixar production, Toy Story for release on Blu-ray on November 2, in a two-disc BD edition and a 2-BD/DVD/Digital Copy Combo Pack. On the same date, the studio will also launch the Ultimate Toy Box 3-Movie Collection, containing all three Toy Story movies on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital copy (ten discs total). No 3D Blu-ray edition has been announced.

Analyst: 3D Blu-ray Exclusives Could “Stymie” Format

In a recent study, consultancy firm Screen Digest estimates that the widespread exclusive bundling of 3D Blu-ray titles with 3D gear from select consumer electronics brands risks choking off demand. The analysts say that this is another "chicken and egg" story, and consider that the 3D platform, if advanced properly, could be Blu-ray's "killer app."

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has a printable $8 off coupon good for the purchase of the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Blu-ray during its first week in stores. To print it, go to the dedicated coupon page on the Disney Movie Rewars Site and click on the "Get Coupon" button; you will need to have the dedicated coupon printer software installed. This coupon is valid only for the BD/DVD/Digital Copy edition, and is redeemable at participating retailers.

American: The Bill Hicks Story Blu-ray Announced

2 Entertain Video has announced American: The Bill Hicks Story for Blu-ray release in the UK on September 27. This documentary tells the life story of outlaw comic Bill Hicks using innovative filmmaking and animation techniques. It featured at SXSW festival in Austin last spring. There is no information regarding region coding at the moment.

The Pillars of the Earth Miniseries Announced on Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that on November 23, it will release The Pillars of the Earth on Blu-ray. This eight-episode miniseries, based on the best-selling novel by Ken Follett, recently aired on Starz. It's set in 12th Century England and revolves around the building of a cathedral and follows the lives of three men over 40 years as they each deal with politics, war, romance and personal ambition. It will be presented in three BDs.

Toy Story 3 Blu-ray in November - and in 3D in December? (Update: No!)

The latest Pixar production, Toy Story 3 (the top-grossing movie of 2010, surpasssing $400 million domestically a billion dollars globally) still hasn't been officially announced by Disney. However, according to retailer information, it will come out on Blu-ray on November 2, in various releases. A two-disc BD edition and a 2-BD/DVD/Digital Copy Combo Pack will be generally available. Target will have an exclusive Ultimate Collector's Edition with a Buzz Lightyear action figure. A Toy Story Ultimate Toy Box trilogy box set (in stagecoach-shaped packaging) will also come out on the same date. And a mystery four-disc edition just added to the mix, with a release date of December 19, which some enthusiasts think may be a 3D Blu-ray edition. Update: its' only the Spanish-language edition.

Sorcerer's Apprentice Blu-ray Dated

An early announcement to retailers indicates that Walt Disney will release the action/adventure movie The Sorcerer's Apprentice on Blu-ray on November 30, coinciding with the BD release of the Fantasia 2 Movie Collection (which features the segment on which this modern retelling is inspired). It will reportedly come out in two editions: a two-disc release, and a BD/DVD/Digital Copy three-disc combo pack.

Eclipse Blu-ray Gets Early December Date

Summit Entertainment is set to release The Twilight Saga: Eclipse on Blu-ray on Saturday, December 4. This third instalment in the franchise based on the series of romance/vampire novels by Stephenie Meyer (which grossed nearly $300 million domestically) will be available both on a 2-disc BD/DVD special edition and a movie-only BD edition.

This romantic drama, based on a best-selling novel by Ben Sherwood starring Zac Efron as a young man who survives an accident that lets him see the world in a unique way. MGM Home Entertainment has officially announced and detailed the 1968 family classic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for Blu-ray release on November 2, in a BD/DVD combo edition (a DVD/BD combo in DVD packaging will also be available separately). This "all-new remastered" edition will be presented in a 7.1 DTS HD Master Audio soundtrack.

For the first time in the history of Blu-ray, a movie written, produced and directed by Tyler Perry topped the sales charts: Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too? was the top-selling BD during the week ended September 5, according to data from Nielsen VideoScan.
