Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

LG Announces Blu-ray Players and 3D Lineup

At this year's IFA in Berlin, LG Electronics is showcasing new 3D Blu-ray players BX5890, HR550 and BD590, as well as a whole lineup of 3D-compatible hardware, including LED and Plasma TVs, Home Theater Systems, and a selection of 3D projectors.

Avatar 3D Blu-ray Exclusive for Panasonic in December; Sony Gets Alice

Confirming earlier reports, HollywoodinHidef.com has it from a "well-placed source" that a 3D Blu-ray release of Avatar 3D will be released on December 1, but it will be exclusively available with the purchase of Panasonic 3D TVs and Blu-ray players. In turn, a 3D BD of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland 3D will be bundled with Sony 3D hardware.

As previously reported, Shout! Factory is set to release the science-fiction movie StarCrash on Blu-ray on September 14, as part of the Roger Corman's Cult Classics collection. The studio has now made available a number of clips from the movie and from some of the special features.

Blu-ray of Ladies & Gentlemen... The Rolling Stones Announced

Eagle Rock Entertainment has announced Ladies & Gentlemen... The Rolling Stones for Blu-ray release on October 12, shortly after a theatrical re-release. This concert film was shot in Texas in 1972 on 16mm film over four nights of the Exile on Main Street US tour. It has been fully restored and remastered from the "original film print" and multi-track audio masters.

Disney Offering $10 Coupon for Beauty and the Beast Blu-ray

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment is offering members of its Movie Rewards program a printable $10 off coupon to upgrade to the Blu-ray Diamond Edition of Beauty and the Beast. To print the coupon, log in to Movie Rewards and enter the UPC of your DVD copy of the movie. Coupons are good at participating stores, and expire October 9.

Mad Max Blu-ray Announced

MGM Home Entertainment has officially announced Mad Max for October 5 in a Blu-ray/DVD pack. Assuaging enthusiasts' fears, the studio has informed that this dystopian movie, directed by George Miller and starring Mel Gibson, will feature two 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks: the original Australian track, and a dub track created for the American release to make dialogue comprehensible to local audiences. And this time, some of the bonus features from the 2002 special edition DVD have even made it to the high-def disc.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31 - September 6

With the extraordinary number of times the film has been re-issued (seems to be an annual tradition), it's somewhat surprising that it took this long for The Evil Dead to be released on Blu-ray. The film, much like its sequels Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn and Army of Darkness, is worshiped by a group of hardcore fans that cherish anything related to this horror classic, so a Blu-ray release is sure to be a most welcome addition to their collection, and I look forward to the inevitable Blu-ray re-release next year.

The Sound of Music Blu-ray Announced

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has officially announced the five-time Academy Award-winning The Sound of Music for Blu-ray release on November 2. This 45th Anniversary Edition, "meticulously restored and remastered" with 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio sound, will be presented in a three-disc (2 BDs, 1 DVD) combo edition, and also in an individually numbered Limited Collector's Set.

Centurion Blu-ray Announced

Magnolia Home Entertainment has announced Centurion for Blu-ray release on November 2, in a BD/Digital Copy combo pack. Set in 117 AD, this action thriller (directed by Neil Marshall and starring Michael Fassbender and Olga Kurylenko) tells the story of a group of Roman soldiers who must fight for their lives behind enemy lines after their legion is decimated in a devastating guerrilla attack.

Onkyo Announces Blu-ray Player and AV Separates

Onkyo is expanding its product line with the announcement of a THX-certified Blu-ray Disc Player, model BD-SP808 (SRP $599), as well as the brand's first A/V preamplifier/processor that is both 3D-Ready and THX-Certified, model PR-SC5508 (SRP $2,199), and matching 150-watt nine-channel amplifier, model PA-MC5500 (SRP $1,699). All will begin shipping in September.

AIX Records has released its first 3D music album on the Blu-ray 3D format. Goldberg Variations Acoustica, is the second commercially-available 3D Blu-ray disc (after Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs) and the first 3D disc with a music performance recorded especially for the format. Lost in Translation Blu-ray Coming Up

An early announcement to retailers indicates that, on December 7, Universal Studios Home Entertainment is set to release Lost in Translation, the acclaimed 2003 independent drama directed by Sofia Coppola and starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. Release details and special features are still to be announced.

Big Daddy Blu-ray Announced

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced Big Daddy for release on Blu-ray on November 9. This 1999 comedy stars Adam Sandler as a thirty-two-year-old slob who adopts a kid to impress his girlfriend. It earned $163 million at the domestic box office, which makes it the highest-grossing Sandler movie to date.

Best Buy is going full steam ahead with Blu-ray exclusivity deals. The latest addition is a wave of catalog titles from Lionsgate Home Entertainment, slated for general release on October 5, but which are available on BB shelves from August 29: 2001 Maniacs, Bad Lieutenant, The Blair Witch Project, Hard Candy, High Tension, Open Water / Open Water 2: Adrift, Secretary, and Wonderland. Fantasia 2-Movie Collection Blu-ray Announced

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced that, on November 30, it will release Fantasia 2 Movie Collection, a 2 Blu-ray / 2 DVD box set including both Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 (neither of which will be available separately), with 1080p video and 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio sound. The animated short Destino will make its debut exclusively on the Blu-ray edition.

Avatar Collector's Edition Blu-ray on November 16

Avatar: Collector's Edition will come out on Blu-ray on November 16. This street date and a cover image were revealed on the trailer for A Message from Pandora, an special feature on an environmental campaign in Brazil, produced by James Cameron and to be included in the Collector's Edition Blu-ray.

Avatar Collector's Edition Blu-ray with 45 Minutes of Deleted Material

During an interview with MTV, James Cameron dropped some more bits of information regarding the still-unannounced Collector's Edition Blu-ray release of Avatar. The Canadian-born filmmaker revealed that the release will include 45 minutes of deleted, unfinished footage - and that's not counting the 16 extra minutes of the Blu-ray extended cut (which will include an opening scene set on Earth).

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has officially announced that on October 19 it will release two films from visionary director Baz Luhrmann: William Shakespeare's Romeo+Juliet and Moulin Rouge!. Both Blu-ray editions will feature new high-definition transfers from the original camera negative, supervised by Luhrmann, brand new content and never-before seen material.

Warner Home Video, in conjunction with BBC Video, has announced Sherlock: Season One for Blu-ray release on November 9, shortly after premiering on PBS's Masterpiece Mystery. This contemporary take on the classic Arthur Conan Doyle stories, co-created by Steven Moffat (Doctor Who), stars BAFTA-nominee Benedict Cumberbatch as the new Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as his loyal friend, Doctor John Watson.

SG-U Complete First Season Blu-ray Announced

MGM Home Entertainment has announced that it will release Stargate Universe: Season One on October 5, just a week after season 2 premieres on SyFy. This five-disc box set will include all 20 episodes from the first season (previously released on Stargate Universe 1.0 and Stargate Universe 1.5). It will carry a list price of $59.99, or about $50 less than the aggregate MSRP of SG-U 1.0 and SG-U 1.5.

Columbia Records has announced that it will release The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story on November 16, on a 3 CD/3 Blu-ray box set, including the remastered 1978 Bruce Springsteen album, never-before-seen studio and live footage, an 80-page notebook, 21 previously-unreleased songs, and a documentary film, to be premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and later on HBO.

Toshiba, Sony Working on 3D without Glasses

On August 24, Japanese consumer-electronics Toshiba announced plans to launch the world's first 3D TV that does not require special glasses, as soon as this holiday season. Shortly afterwards, Sony reacted by announcing that it too is developing its own technology for glasses-less TV, although it doesn't have a definite launch date.

Mitsubishi Launches 3D Tour

Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America, Inc. has announced the launch of its nationwide 3D Experience Tour, which will introduce its lineup of 3D DLP Home Cinema Televisions to US consumers. Starting today, the tour will showcase Mitsubishi's full lineup of very large 3D DLP Home Cinema TVs, including an 82-inch behemoth which offers more than three times the viewing area of a 46-inch screen.

Blu-ray Sales, August 16-22: Miley Sings the Blus (Update)

The Last Song was the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended August 22, according to Nielsen VideoScan. Second place went to Dexter: The Fourth Season, which was the new release with the highest Blu-ray market share (14%, or twice what the Third Season got in its first week last year). The other new release, Furry Vengeance, didn't even make the BD top 20. Update: overall sales figures added.

The Runaways SteelBook Blu-ray in Germany

According to retailer information, the German Blu-ray release of The Runaways (scheduled for October 22) has been upgraded to SteelBook packaging. Unlike other German releases (where the SteelBook is a different, and usually pricier, SKU), this BD will come out initially in SteelBook only, as, e.g. TF1 has done in the past in France.
