Hailed as a "thinking man's blockbuster", Christopher Nolan's ambitious lucid-dream actioner
Inception was a massive hit with critics and audience alike, with an 87% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and earning $292 million domestically and $823 million worldwide. Does the BD release measure up? Blu-ray.com is already out with a full
Inception Blu-ray review and the answer is a resounding yes.
Regarding the movie itself, staff reviewer Kenneth Brown considers that
Inception "not only stands as the pinnacle of a master filmmaker's canon, but as a cerebral masterpiece in its own right; one that's far and away my favorite film of 2010, and a strong contender for my favorite film of all time. And believe me, that isn't the sort of statement I ever make lightly."
The video transfer comes "close to perfection" and is free from any of the issues some found with
The Dark Knight. Audio, in turn, is by Ken's estimation, "one of the best — if not the best — lossless audio mixes of the year."
The only area where this release falls somewhat short of expectations is in the extras department, as the Extraction Mode "doesn't cover enough ground" and a proper Maximum Movie Mode would have been ideal. "Even so," concedes Ken, "the content on hand is high-quality stuff, and most fans will walk away fairly satisfied."
In his conclusion, Ken admits that
Inception is a divisive film, but he thinks it is "cinema in its purest form – bold, inventive and daring," and its Blu-ray edition is "a must-own release."
