Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Big Daddy Blu-ray Cancelled

Three weeks ago, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment had announced Big Daddy for Blu-ray release on November 9. Now the studio has unceremoniously pulled this Adam Sandler comedy from its schedule. No reason is given for this cancellation, and no new release date is available.

The Bits Interviews Apocalypse Now Blu-ray Production Team

The Digital Bits has published an in-depth interview with the production team at Lionsgate Home Entertainment and American Zoetrope discussing the upcoming Blu-ray release of Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now, which will come out on October 19, on a two-disc Special Edition and a three-disc Full Disclosure Edition. The interview addresses the video transfer (including the controversial aspect ratio issue), as well as the documentary Hearts of Darknesss and new special features.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced Scott Pilgrim vs. The World for Blu-ray release on November 9, in a content-loaded BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack. This action comedy, directed by Edgar Wright and starring Michael Cera, garnered critical acclaim but underperformed at the box office. Buyers of the Blu-ray will be able to watch one bonus movie (Tremors or Pitch Black), streamed instantly via BD-Live, Smartphone or computer.

Santa Sangre Blu-ray in January

Severin Films has announced that, on January 25, 2011, it will release the cult movie Santa Sangre, previously unavailable on disc in the US. For this Blu-ray release, Severin is using a restored print of the uncut European version. More than five hours of extras will be included.

Sony Launches Blu-ray Essentials Collection

Just in time for the holidays, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the debut of the Blu-ray Essentials Collection, a selection of 12 action-adventure films from the studio's catalog, chosen "for their superior picture and sound quality, critical acclaim, and genre appeal to create a collection designed to maximize the home theater experience." All 12 titles will be available on November 16 at newly-reduced prices ranging from $19.95 for single-disc editions to $24.95 for two-disc editions.

PS3 Gets 3D Blu-ray Support - but without Lossless Audio

As announced last week, new firmware version 3.50 is now available for the PlayStation 3, which enables support for the Blu-ray 3D specification on all incarnations of the PS3 console. However, Sony Computer Entertainment has confirmed that DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD won't be supported on the PS3 during 3D Blu-ray playback.

Integra Unveils New Blu-ray Players at CEDIA

At the CEDIA fair, high-end audio-video brand Integra will introduce a range of THX-certified equipment. The new lineup includes two new Blu-ray players, models DBS-50.2 (SRP $700) and DBS 30.2 ($500). Both support video streaming, but not 3D, DVD-Audio or SACD.

Spider-Man 1 and 2 Get Separate Blu-ray Releases (Update)

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced Spider-Man and Spider-Man for Blu-ray release on November 16. Until now, the first two Spidey movies were only available as part of the box set Spider-Man: The High Definition Trilogy, released in October 2007. Update: contrary to previous information, no additional special features will be included.

Rocky Movies Available Separately on Blu-ray

On October 5, MGM Home Entertainment will release Rocky II, Rocky III, Rocky IV and Rocky V on separate Blu-ray editions. Until now, the second to fifth installments in the Rocky series were only available as part of Rocky: The Undisputed Collection.

End of Life for Oppo BDP-80 Blu-ray Player

According to several well-placed sources, the latest entry in Oppo's Blu-ray player lineup, model BDP-80, is already being discontinued, allegedly because of poor sales. The brand's other, older players, models BDP-83 and BDP-83 Special Edition, will continue to be sold. No new models have been announced yet.

Alice in Wonderland 3D Blu-ray with Sony Starter Kit Now, Separately in December

Like Samsung a few days ago, Sony is now shipping a new 3D Starter Kit, featuring two pairs of active-shutter glasses and an exclusive copy of the 3D Blu-ray of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. This exclusivity deal with Sony 3D equipment ends after 60 days. Then, on December 7, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment will release the Alice 3D BD for general availability.

My Bloody Valentine Full HD 3D Blu-ray Release

The 2009 horror movie My Bloody Valentine will splatter its way onto 3D Blu-ray exclusively at Best Buy October 5th. This will mark the first live-action motion picture shot natively in 3D to hit the format. The film will be presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1, with 7.1 DTS-HD MA sound. No special features have been announced at this time.

Geek Peek: Back to the Future Trilogy Limited Edition Tin Blu-ray

In the UK, Universal Home Entertainment is releasing the Back to the Future Trilogy in three editions: a regular three-disc box set, a Limited Edition Delorean box set and a Limited Edition tin, whose contents have now been revealed in full display. It includes a blueprint for the Delorean, an 'Outatime' number plate, a 1950-2000 Sports Almanac, a lenticular photo of Marty McFly's family, posters, and artcards.

Synapse Films Enters Blu-ray with Vampire Circus

Synapse Films is finally entering the Blu-ray arena. The first title from the independent studio, scheduled for December is Vampire Circus, a 1972 horror title from Hammer Film Productions directed by Robert Young and set in a 19th-century village visited by a traveling carnival whose performers are bloodsuckers. Video will be presented in 1080p and 1.66:1, while audio will be monoaural DTS-HD Master Audio.

The Social Network Soundtrack Announced for Audio Blu-ray Release

Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) and producer Atticus Ross recently completed the soundtrack for David Fincher's upcoming docudrama The Social Network and have announced that the soundtrack will be available in an audio-only Blu-ray. Expected to ship the week of October 18th, the 19-track disc will feature the entire The Social Network soundtrack in lossless stereo and 5.1 surround sound.

France Gets Non-exclusive Bolt and Alice in Wonderland 3D Blu-ray

An early announcement to retailers indicates that, on November 3, the French branch of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment will release 3D Blu-ray editions of the animated movie Bolt and of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. There is no information regarding region coding. In the US, this title will be offered exclusively to the buyers of Sony Bravia 3D HDTVs.

Samsung 3D Starter Kit Now with How to Train Your Dragon 3D Blu-ray (Update)

Samsung is discontinuing its existing 3D Starter Kit (model number SSG-P2100T), which included two pairs of 3D glasses and a bundled copy of the 3D Blu-ray of Monsters vs Aliens. A new 3D Starter Kit (model number SSG-P2100X/ZA) is now available, which contains an IMAX 3D triple feature (comprised of Galapagos, Into the Deep and Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs), and a mail-in coupon for a free copy of the 3D Blu-ray movie How to Train Your Dragon (unannounced for general release separately).

Little Fockers Movie Cash with Meet the Parents, Fockers & Other Blu-ray

Universal Studios Home Entertainment is offering $10 of movie money good for the upcoming theatrical release of Little Fockers (slated for December 22). Vouchers will be included, not only in the announced Blu-ray editions of Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers, but also on a wide range of comedies from its catalog, which will be available from December 5.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the 3D Blu-ray edition of the CG animated movie Open Season, which will be available for all to purchase on November 16. Two of the disc's bonus features (Wheel of Fortune: Forest Edition and Voice-a-Rama) have also received a 3D makeover.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced Ramona and Beezus for Blu-ray release on November 9, in a BD/DVD/Digital Copy Combo Pack. This family film, produced by Walden Media and based on a popular series of children books by Beverly Cleary, stars teen sensation Selena Gomez and newcomer Joey King as "a little girl with a very big imagination and a nose for mischief."

Sales of TV Season Sets on Blu-ray Up 84%

According to Nielsen data, sales of complete-season sets on Blu-ray for the first six months of 2010 are up 84% over the same period of 2009. Sales of TV programming on BD in general are up 67%. Total unit sales of TV-on-BD SKUs stood at 784,513, of which 424,417 were complete-season sets (not counting sales from Walmart and Sam's Club).

PS3 Firmware 3.50 with 3D Blu-ray Support on September 21

During the Tokyo Game Show, Sony Computer Entertainment revealed that support for the Blu-ray 3D format will be added to the PS3 console with firmware version 3.50, slated for release on September 21 - the day before the opening of the CEDIA consumer electronics fair. That's a bit earlier than the latest availability estimate of October, given by Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer just a fortnight ago.

Warner Announces Six 3D Blu-ray Titles for General Release

Alleviating the scarcity of 3D Blu-ray titles at retail, Warner Home Video has announced that on November 16 it will release six 3D BDs unfettered by exclusive hardware bundles: Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore (WHV's first 3D day-and-date title), Clash of the Titans, The Polar Express, and the IMAX documentaries Deep Sea (previously Sony-exclusive), Space Station (previously bundled with LG hardware overseas) and Under the Sea (previously LG-exclusive).

Harsh Times, The Matador, Derailed Announced on Blu-ray

Through a retailer alert, Vivendi Visual Entertainment has announced three catalog films for release on Blu-ray in December: Harsh Times (starring Christian Bale) on the 7th, The Matador (starring Pierce Brosnan and Greg Kinnear) on the 21st, and Derailed (starring Clive Owen and Jennifer Aniston) on December 28. All three had been previously released by The Weinstein Company in 2006-2007 on the defunct HD DVD format.

Warner Home Video has announced Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore (a sequel to 2001's espionage/talking-animal movie Cats & Dogs) for Blu-ray release on November 16, on a BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack. This movie will also be available in a 3D Blu-ray version, making it the first day-and-date 3D title for the studio (and for the industry, tied with Disney's A Christmas Carol).

Optimum Home Entertainment has announced that, on October 18, it will release Room in Rome, the first English-language film directed by Spanish director Julio Medem. This erotic drama, inspired in the Chilean film En la cama, charts a one-night stand between two young women who meet in Rome and spend the night together in a hotel room. There is no information regarding region coding.

Blu-ray Sales, September 6-12: Killers Makes a Killing (Update)

The action romantic comedy Killers may have underperformed at the box office, but it was easily the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended September 12, according to Nielsen VideoScan. The week was otherwise dominated by TV season sets. The highest Blu-ray percentage, however, was for MacGruber, with 28% of its total sales coming from the BD version. Update: overall sales figures added.

Criterion Blu-ray in December: Cronenberg, Del Toro

After the bonanza of Blu-ray titles that The Criterion Collection is lavishing upon film enthusiasts in September-November, the studio's December slate looks comparatively spare. Two movies have been announced for Blu-ray release on December 7: Cronos (Guillermo del Toro, 1993) – with a transfer supervised and approved by Del Toro and cinematographer Guillermo Navarro –; and Videodrome (David Cronenberg, 1993) in its unrated version.
