Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Criterion Blu-ray in January 2011: Brooks, Fuller, Haskin, Melville

After a quiet December, Criterion will kick off the New Year with renewed energy, as five very varied titles have been announced for Blu-ray release in January. On January 11, The Army of Shadows (L'armée des ombres; Jean-Pierre Melville, 1969) and Robinson Crusoe on Mars (Byron Haskin, 1964). A week later, the studio will release two films by Samuel Fuller: Shock Corridor (1963) and The Naked Kiss (1964). And finally, on January 25, Broadcast News (James L. Brooks, 1987) will hit shelves.

Thir13en Ghosts/House of Wax Blu-ray Double Feature

On October 19, Warner Home Video will release a horror double feature Blu-ray: Thir13en Ghosts / House of Wax - of which the former is new to high-definition in the US, whereas the latter was released separately in 2006. This two-disc pack was previously available as a Best Buy exclusive.

MotoGP Review Blu-ray in December

Duke Marketing has announced MotoGP Review 2010 for Blu-ray release on December 13, in a BD/DVD pack. This is the first time a MotoGP review will have been released in the high-definition format. It includes action from every race of the 2010 MotoGP World Championship - featuring Jorge Lorenzo, Valentino Rossi, Dani Pedrosa and Casey Stoner - and also interviews, informed commentary and bonus features such as on-board laps from every circuit.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ Damn the Torpedoes Deluxe Edition Audio Blu-ray

On November 9, Backstreet/Geffen/UMe will release an expanded and remastered Deluxe edition of the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers classic album Damn the Torpedoes. This audio Blu-ray will be digitally remastered from the original analog master tapes. The BD will exclusively include the original music videos for "Here Comes My Girl" and "Refugee."

Battle Royale UK Blu-ray Coming Up

On November 29, Arrow Films will release the Japanese cult film Battle Royale, directed by Kinji Fukasaku. It will initially come in a three-disc edition, limited to 5,000 copies; a special edition will follow later. Both the theatrical cut and the director's cut of the movie will be included, from brand-new restorations.

True Legend UK Blu-ray Announced.

Optimum Home Entertainment has announced True Legend for Blu-ray release in the UK on October 25. This action movie, centered on the life of Chinese folk hero Su Qi-er, is directed by acclaimed acclaimed martial arts choreographer and director Yuen Woo-ping. Although it was shown in British 3D cinemas in September, the BD will be 2D only. There is no information regarding region coding.

The Experiment UK Blu-ray Announced

Momentum Pictures has announced The Experiment for Blu-ray release on October 18. This film, co-written and directed by Prison Break creator Paul Schering and starring Adrien Brody and Forest Whitaker, is a remake of a 2001 German film of the same title about an experiment simulating prison life that goes out of control - inspired by the real-life story of the Stanford prison experiment that was conducted in 1971 by Dr. Philip Zimbardo.

This Thursday, Amazon has an interesting Blu-ray related deal of the day: up to midnight PST, you can order Torchwood: The Complete First Season for $41.99, and Torchwood: The Complete Second Season for $33.99 (58% off in both cases). The price history shows that this is the cheapest Season 2 has been, but Season 1 was slightly cheaper during another Deal of the Day a year ago.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray release of Vampires Suck on November 30 in an extended unrated version as well as the theatrical version. In this new spoof, the directing duo that brought you Meet the Spartans> and Disaster Movie now pokes fun at the Twilight movies. A Digital Copy will be included.

Inception Blu-ray Announced

Warner Home Video has officially announced the eagerly-awaited Inception for Blu-ray release on December 7, on a BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack. This psychological action thriller, directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, was a massive hit this summer despite its enigmatic premise and complex plot. The BD will feature Warner's Maximum Movie Mode, here redubbed "Extraction Mode."

Let the Right One In UK Blu-ray Re-release

Momentum Pictures has announced that on October 18 it will re-release the Swedish horror movie Let The Right One In, tying in with the theatrical release of its English-language remake, Let Me In. This re-release will feature new cover art and is initially available only at the The Hut and Zavvi web stores.

Blu-ray Sales, October 4-10: Beast Knocks down Karate Kid (Update)

The Diamond Edition of Disney's Beauty and the Beast was the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended October 10, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert. Beauty was the top-selling title on packaged media overall on the strength of its BD/DVD combo sales alone (the DVD edition comes out in November). The 2010 remake of The Karate Kid entered at No. 3, behind Iron Man 2. Update: sales charts and figures added.

Video: The Sound of Music Blu-ray Restoration

The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization has uploaded a video discussing the new restoration of The Sound of Music, slated for Blu-ray release on November 2. As previously reported, the movie will be soon playing in theaters using the 4K master. Additionally, the entire cast will reunite for the first time on the Oprah Winfrey show on October 29.

Target Exclusive Sound of Music Blu-ray Book Edition

On November 2, Target will exclusively offer a book edition of the classic The Sound of Music. Like the general release, it will include two Blu-ray discs (one for the feature film and one for special features) and a DVD, plus a collector's book marking the 45th anniversary of the movie. It will carry a list price of $34.99.

3D Blu-ray for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix & Half-Blood Prince

Warner Home Video has hired the services of the company Prime Focus London to convert two back titles in the Harry Potter series for 3D Blu-ray: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince; work has reportedly already begun on the latter. The studio has not revealed whether those two will get a theatrical re-release in 3D, or when the 3D BDs are expected to come out.

Nanny McPhee Returns Announced on Blu-ray

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that on December 14 it will release the family movie Nanny McPhee Returns (also known as Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang), with Emma Thompson reprising her role from the 2006 Nanny McPhee. Buyers of the Blu-ray will be able to watch one bonus movie (Curious George 2: Follow That Monkey or Beethoven's Big Break), streamed instantly via BD-Live, Smartphone or computer.

Univesal Studios Home Entertainment has announced two catalog titles for Blu-ray release on January 25, 2011: the award-winning A Beautiful Mind (Ron Howard, 2001) and the indie favorite Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Michel Gondry, 2004). Both will be presented in non-flipper BD50 discs.

Sony Launches Blu-ray Player with Google TV Support

Sony Electronics has announced its Blu-ray player model NSX-GT1, powered by Google TV — the world's first device with the ability to play Blu-ray discs, watch HDTV, enjoy apps, and browse the Internet seamlessly on one device. It is built on the Android platform, runs the Google Chrome browser and includes an Intel Atom processor. It will be available in October and is priced at $399.99 ($100 more than the Logitech Google TV platform, which doesn't have BD).

And Soon the Darkness Blu-ray Announced

Anchor Bay Entertainment has announced And Soon the Darkness for Blu-ray release on December 28. This thriller, starring Amber Heard and Odette Yustman as two American girls who embark on an ill-fated bike tour through a remote part of Argentina's countryside, is a remake of a 1970 British movie of the same title. It will get a limited theatrical release on December 17.

Austin Powers Movies Get Separate Blu-ray Editions

On January 4, 2011, Warner Home Video will release the New Line Cinema titles Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and Austin Powers in Goldmember, previously available on Blu-ray only on the Austin Powers Collection. Apparently, Best Buy has a timed exclusive for these BDs and they are already appearing on shelves (but not on its website).

Bambi and Lion King Diamond Blu-ray Confirmed for 2011

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has uploaded two Blu-ray trailers to its YouTube page, confirming the schedule for the classic animated titles that will come out on Diamond Edition Blu-ray next year. Bambi will be released in the spring of 2011, and The Lion King in the fall. Edition details are still pending.

Josh Brolin was one of the unforgettable trio of stars responsible for the success of No Country for Old Men. Megan Fox was catapulted to fame starring beside Shia LaBeouf in the huge Transformers series. John Malkovich is, well, John Malkovich. But all that star power could do nothing to rescue the motion picture adaptation of Jonah Hex, which made a loud flushing sound while grossing only a quarter of its budget in ticket sales. Today's Blu-ray release of Jonah Hex will help alleviate that sting a bit, but don't count on seeing a sequel.

Amazon Gets Early Blu-ray Titles, Including Lost in Translation and IMAX 3D

Late this year, Amazon will offer several Blu-ray titles five weeks before other retailers. Universal's Lost in Translation will be available at the etailer on December 7, while other retailers will have to wait until January 4, 2011. Similarly, three IMAX 3D Blu-ray titles from Image Entertainment (Dinosaurs Alive! 3D, Grand Canyon Adventure: River at Risk 3D and Wild Ocean 3D) will be in stock at Amazon on November 2, while general release will be on December 7.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced Mother and Child for Blu-ray release on December 14. This drama, starring Annette Bening, Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and Samuel L. Jackson, was featured at the Toronto and Sundance film festivals. It met with positive reviews and got a limited theatrical release in May.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced Orlando for Blu-ray release on December 21. This period drama, based on a novel by Virginia Woolf, stars Tilda Swinton as an English nobleman who lives for 500 years and changes sex halfway. The BD will feature all the bonus content from the special-edition DVD released two months ago.

This Tuesday, Amazon has an interesting Blu-ray related deal of the day: up to midnight PST, you can order Band of Brothers on Blu-ray, with a bundled sampler disc for The Pacific for only $36.99 (63% off MSRP). The price history for the BD edition of this HBO series shows that this is the cheapest it has been - and even cheaper than the lowest historic price for Band of Brothers without the Pacific disc.

National Entertainment Media has announced Love Ranch for Blu-ray release on November 9 (with early availability for rental at Blockbuster). This drama, directed by Taylor Hackford and starring Helen Mirren and Joe Pesci, is based on the story of the married couple who opened the first legal brothel in the US. It had a limited release in June.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced The Other Guys for Blu-ray release on December 14, in a single-disc Blu-ray and a BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo. This "Unrated Other Edition" will include both the theatrical and extended film versions of this action comedy, starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. "Over 100 minutes" of bonus contents will be included.

Amazon UK Announces Free Delivery for 17 European Countries

Amazon.co.uk today introduced its free delivery service for customers in 17 European countries, both inside and outside the European Union. As of today, millions of items from Amazon UK's stores are eligible for free delivery, which is available on all orders over £25 (GBP25) - about €28.6 at the current exchange rate.
