Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Big Daddy, Mr. Deeds Blu-ray Exclusively at Best Buy

The Blu-ray release of Adam Sandler comedy Big Daddy, which had initially been announced by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment only to vanish from the studio's schedule, will finally come out as planned on November 9, but with a catch: it will be a Best Buy exclusive. On that same date, BB will also offer another Sandler movie, Mr. Deeds.

Original True Grit Announced on Blu-ray

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that it will release the original 1969 version of True Grit on Blu-ray on December 14, tying in with the theatrical release of the remake directed by the Coen brothers. This western was directed by Henry Hathaway and starred John Wayne in a memorable role that won him his only Academy Award.

Blu-ray Boxed Set of the Week: Dexter Seasons 1-4 $94.99

Amazon's current Blu-ray Boxed Set of the Week is for the four-season set Dexter: The Complete Seasons 1-4, which which can now be had for only $94.99 (58% off MSRP, or under $24 per season). The price tracker shows that this is the lowest this compilation has been, although the Seasons 1-3 box set recently featured in a Deal of the Day for $69.99. This offer is valid through October 16.

Shrek Forever After and Collection Blu-ray in December

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced the Dreamworks Animation movie Shrek Forever After for Blu-ray release on December 7. On the same date, the studio will also release Shrek: The Whole Story, a gift set including all four Shrek movies.

Good news everyone - Planet Express is back in business! 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has officially announced the Blu-ray release of Futurama: Volume 5, with a street date of December 21. This two-disc BD set will include 13 new episodes aired on Comedy Central, with 1080p video and a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Step Up 3D on 2D & 3D Blu-ray in December

According to retailer information, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has set Step Up 3D (yes, the "3D" is part of the title) for Blu-ray release on December 21, in two editions: a BD/DVD/Digital Copy release and a BD/3D BD/DVD/Digital Copy edition. Suggested retail price has been set at $39.99 and $49.99, respectively. Note that this dance movie was natively shot in 3D, rather than using 2D-to-3D conversion.

Eureka Announces Faccia a Faccia Blu-ray

Eureka Entertainment has announced Faccia a faccia (Face to Face) for Blu-ray release on November 15. This 1967 spaghetti western and parable of the rise of fascism was directed by Sergio Sollima (The Big Gundown), and features a pounding score by il maestro Ennio Morricone. It will be presented in 1080p 2.35:1 video, with both English and Italian soundtracks.

Regina Spektor Live Blu-ray Coming Up

On November 22, Sire/Warner Bros Records will release Regina Spektor: Live in London on a Blu-ray/CD edition. This is the first live recording and concert film from this Russian-born singer-songwriter, and was captured mainly at London's Hammersmith Apollo Theatre, during Spektor's UK tour in support of her latest album, Far. Audio/video specifications are pending.

Four-week Delay for Karate Kid and Other Sony Movies at Netflix

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has reportedly signed an agreement with Netflix to delay availability of selected titles from the studio for four weeks after street date. The first title under this arrangement is The Karate Kid, which came out on October 5 and will be available for rental only from November 2.

Universal Blu-ray Catalog Wave Coming Up

According to retailer information, Universal Studios Home Entertainment is preparing a deluge of catalog Blu-ray releases, with no fewer than 15 very diverse movies, prominently including classics such as To Kill a Mockingbird and Hitchcock's The Birds, two John Landis comedies, a George Lucas non-scifi movie and several titles previously released on the defunct HD DVD.

Blu-ray Sales, Sep.27-Oct.3: Iron Man 2 Is Number 1

Iron Man 2 was hands down the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended October 3, outselling runner-up Get Him to the Greek by 14 to 1. According to Nielsen VideoScan, a record 52% of the total disc sales of Iron Man 2 came from the Blu-ray editions (not including sales at Walmart).

Knight and Day Blu-ray Announced in the UK with Extended Cut

The UK branch of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced the action comedy Knight and Day, in a "Triple Play" (BD/DVD/Digital Copy) edition. Unlike the US edition, this release will include the extended cut, with seven never-before-seen minutes of stars Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz in action. There is no information regarding region coding.

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has officially announced the Blu-ray release of the Cruise/Diaz action comedy Knight and Day for November 30, in a BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack and a limited-edition BD/DVD holiday combo pack; some retailers are also offering a single-disc edition, but that's not officially announced. According to the studio, only the theatrical cut of the movie will be included, unlike in the UK.

Evil Dead Limited Edition Blu-ray Sold Out

When Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead was released on Blu-ray, it came out in a limited edition set, which included a special features DVD. Now Amazon and other retailers are already sold out of this first edition and are selling a single-disc release, which drops most of the extras from the limited edition, with the exception of the audio commentary.

Nightmare on Elm Street, Splice, Exorcist on Single-disc Blu-ray at Walmart

Retail giant Walmart is selling several recent Blu-ray releases from Warner Home Video in single-disc versions: A Nightmare on Elm Street and Splice can be bought without accompanying DVD and digital copies. The Exorcist is also available in a single-disc and non-DigiBook edition - but in this case more substantial contents are lost (especially the original theatrical cut of the movie).

Image Announces Trio of IMAX 3D Blu-ray Titles

Image Entertainment, Inc. has announced a special agreement with Big Picture Digital Productions to distribute three IMAX 3D titles in the 3D Blu-ray format. The first titles to be released under the new agreement will be Dinosaurs Alive! 3D by Giant Screen Films; Grand Canyon Adventure: River at Risk 3D from award-winning producers MacGillivray Freeman Films; and Wild Ocean 3D by Yes/No Productions. All three have a street date of December 7. Other titles to be released will be announced shortly.

The Last Airbender 3D Blu-ray at Best Buy

According to retailer information, Paramount Home Entertainment will release The Last Airbender 3D on November 16, making it the studio's first 3D Blu-ray release not exclusively bundled with 3D hardware. However, it will be a retailer exclusive, initially available only at Best Buy. Suggested retail price for this multi-disc set is $39.99; other release details are unavailable at this time.

Video Games Live: Level 2 Blu-ray Announced

The concert event known as Video Games Live, created and produced by video game composer Tommy Tallarico, is coming to video for the first time, as Video Games Live: Level 2 has been announced by Shout Factory for Blu-ray release on October 19, with over three hours of bonus features and previously unreleased music and video. This concert was filmed in New Orleans this past April in high definition with 5.1 audio surround sound.

The UK branch of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced Black Death for Blu-ray release on October 18. This medieval action movie, starring Sean Bean and directed by Christopher Smith, follows a group of mercenaries on a quest into a remote marsh to hunt down a necromancer - someone who is able to bring the dead back to life.

Optimum Home entertainment has announced that on November 1 it will release Carlos, the biopic of international terrorist Carlos The Jackal directed by Olivier Assayas. This three-disc Blu-ray set will include both the shorter "movie" version (with a runtime of 165 minutes), and the 340-minute "trilogy", which screened out of competition at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival.

WB Cancels My Dog Skip Blu-ray, Delays Ocean’s 11

Warner Home Video has withdrawn My Dog Skip from its Blu-ray release schedule. The studio has not given a new release date, or any reason for the cancellation of this family movie, initially announced for October 19. In other date change news, Ocean's 11, initially slated for today, has been pushed back a month, to November 9.

WB Announces 10, Pleasantville, You’ve Got Mail Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced three "romantic film favorites" (with varying degrees of romanticism) for release on Blu-ray on February 1, just in time for Valentine's Day: 10 (Blake Edwards, 1979), Pleasantville (Gary Ross, 1998) and You've Got Mail (Nora Ephron, 1998). Like Warner recently announced, list price is only $19.98. You've Got Mail will come bundled with a DVD copy of The Shop Around the Corner, the 1940 Ernst Lubitsch film upon which it is based.

In this direct-to-video sequel to Beverly Hills Chihuahua, talking Chihuahuas are back in a comedy that's "a pack of outrageous fun for the whole family," featuring again the voice of George Lopez.

Fairbanks’ Black Pirate Blu-ray Coming Up

On December 14, Kino Video will release The Black Pirate. This 1926 swashbuckling adventure movie, starring Douglas Fairbanks, was shot on two-strip Technicolor (rather than the more advanced and lush three-strip process that came later). It will be presented with two music tracks: the original 1926 orchestral score by Mortimer Wilson, conducted by Robert Israel; and a BD-exclusive organ score by Lee Erwin.

20th Century Fox Entertainment has officially announced Avatar: Extended Collector's Edition for Blu-ray release on November 16 in North America (and internationally from November 15). As previously reported, this edition will consist of three discs and contain three versions of the film, including an all-new extended cut, as well as hours of never-before seen material including over 45 minutes of deleted scenes. Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced The Expendables for Blu-ray release on November 23, in a BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack. For this film in the vein of the action movies of the 1980s and early 1990s, director/co-writer/star Sylvester Stallone gathered a remarkable cast including Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren and Mickey Rourke as a group of mercenaries with the mission of overthrowing a Latin American dictator.

Standalone Blu-ray Player Sales to Top 24m Units in 2010

Sales of Blu-ray players, excluding PS3, are expected to total nearly 24m units this year in the US, Europe and Japan, according to a new report from Futuresource Consulting. At least 10% of all Blu-ray devices shipped this year are expected to offer 3D playback, rising to more than 25% in 2011. By 2014, nearly 40% of homes across those three key regions will own a 3D Blu-ray player, recorder or home theater.
