Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Blue Underground Boss Announces Upcoming Blu-ray Titles

In an interview with AVManiacs.com/The Cinefiles, William Lustig, president of Blue Underground and director of Maniac and Vigilante, revealed some titles coming up on Blu-ray from the independent label. They include Lucio Fulci's Zombie and House by the Cemetery, and three Dario Argento Films: Cat O'Nine Tails, Inferno and Deep Red.

The Blu-ray.com team is happy to announce another site upgrade. This time we have added a recommendation feature and improved several collection functions. The recommendation feature works by analyzing your collection and your taste in movies and then suggests titles that are likely to suit your taste. The collection search has been upgraded, a statistics page about your collection has been added, a collection matcher has been added which finds other members with similar collections as yours. You can now also see how many members that have a specific title in their collection on each movie page.

BFI Announces Two Jacques Tati Films on Blu-ray

BFI Video has announced that on November 29 it will release two movies starring and directed by Jacques Tati: Les vacances de Monsieur Hulot and Playtime. Both will come out in dual-format, two-disc BD/DVD packs. The films have been lovingly remastered in high definition and the extras on each release includes never-before released alternative versions of the films, amongst which is the rarely seen original 1953 theatrical version of Les vacances de Monsieur Hulot.

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced The Last Exorcism for Blu-ray release on January 4, 2011, on a BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack. This mockumentary centers around a charismatic preacher who expects to perform a routine "exorcism" on a disturbed religious fanatic but instead encounters a true evil far beyond his wildest imagination.

MPI Signs Blu-ray Distribution Deal with Severin

MPI Media Group has obtained the North American home-entertainment rights to the catalog of independent label Severin Films. As many as a dozen releases are expected a year under the deal (although not all may come out in high definition). One of the first Blu-ray titles under the agreement is Alejandro Jodorowsky's Santa Sangre, previously unavailable on disc in the US and scheduled for release on January 25, 2011.

First details have surfaced regarding the terms for the Panasonic promotion offering a 3D Blu-ray version of James Cameron's Avatar. Blu-ray Sales, October 18-24: Dragon Slays Predators (Update)

In its second week, How to Train Your Dragon was again the top-selling title on Blu-ray, moving about 18% more copies than runner-up Predators, according to Nielsen VideoScan. The new reboot of the Predator franchise got a respectable 42% of its sales from the BD edition. Another big seller was The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which entered at number 5. Eureka Video has announced Shogun Assassin for Blu-ray release on November 29, on a limited-edition dual-format SteelBook edition. Shogun Assassin is a US-made condensation of the first two films in the Lone Wolf and Cub series of Japanese movies. In the UK, it was originally censored by the BBFC for cinema release and then banned as a video nasty. Now it is released fully uncut.

Eagle Rock Entertainment has announced that it will release The Bee Gees: In Our Own Time on Blu-ray on November 16, four days before airing on A&E. This revealing look at the history of The Bee Gees features brand new interviews with Barry and Robin Gibb, as well as Maurice Gibb shortly before his 2003 passing. Interweaved with live performances, TV and film clips, and early, rare videos of the band, this 116-minute documentary lavishly illustrates the Bee Gees experience.

The UK branch of Warner Home Video has announced Inception for Blu-ray release on December 6, on a "Triple Play" BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack. Also available will be a Limited Edition Briefcase with five movie art cards, a spinning top and a booklet – which is actually the user manual for the PASIV (Portable Automated Somnacin IntraVenous) device used in the movie.

All the President's Men and Network Announced on Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced two Oscar-winning media-themed films from the 1970s for Blu-ray release on February 15, 2011: All the President's Men, a retelling of the Watergate burglary investigation that ultimately brought down Richard Nixon's administration; and Network, a prophetic satire that takes equal jabs at the establishment and the counter-revolutionary movement. All the President's Men will be presented in DigiBook packaging with a 40-page book.

The American Announced on Blu-ray

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced The American for Blu-ray release on December 28. This movie, directed by Anton Corbijn (Control) and starring George Clooney as an assassin on his last job, was (and still is) marketed by the studio as a "sexy suspense thriller" but theater audiences bristled at the more slow, psychological film they saw on screen.

The last time the Back to the Future Trilogy was released, there was a huge uproar from the hundreds of thousands of fans who had purchased the set only to discover that the framing had been significantly altered during the re-mastering process. Thankfully, Universal has learned from those mistakes and is delivering the futuristic (and historic) trilogy in high definition for today's Blu-ray release.

Blu-ray Sales in Western Europe/Japan Up 67.6%

According to Media Control GfK International research, based on actual point-of-sale data, Blu-ray unit sales volume in the third quarter of the year in Western Europe and Japan was up 67.6% from last year. Combined DVD/Blu-ray units were down 3.8% year over year, but were 8.8% higher than in the second quarter of 2010.
