Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

This Sunday, Amazon has an interesting Blu-ray related deal of the day: up to midnight PST, you can order Ken Burns' The National Parks: America's Best Idea for only $48.99 (62% off MSRP). The price history shows that this is the cheapest this six-disc documentary series has been at Amazon, although it has been cheaper at Best Buy during two of its own Deals of the Day, in June and October this year. Update: deal expired.

Media Blasters Partners with Allegro Media Group

Media Blasters has announced that it has formed a partnership with the media distribution giant Allegro Media Group. Key Media Blasters' labels AnimeWorks -specializing in Japanese animation-, Tokyo Shock -specializing in Asian film-, and Shriek Show -specializing in horror-, will now be distributed through Allegro. With this partnership, Media Blasters will now "focus on localizing properties for the US market, developing new features and series, and producing the highest possible quality DVD, Blu-Ray, and digitally distributed releases," said John Sirabella, President and CEO of Media Blasters.

Bambi Blu-ray Gets Early March Date

An early announcement to retailers indicates that Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment will release its animated classic Bambi on Blu-ray on March 1, 2011, as part of the Diamond Collection, in a BD/DVD combo edition. This 1942 movie has had its picture and sound thoroughly restored for this release.

Daughters of Darkness Blu-ray Delayed

Blue Underground has changed the release date of the 1971 psychosexual thriller Daughters of Darkness, originally announced for December 21 and which now will come out on February 22, 2011. The studio has said that the reason for the delay was that they needed extra time to prepare this BD release. Disc details are unchanged.

Original Tron Remastered for Blu-ray

During a recent interview, Tron director Steven Lisberger said that he has just spent six weeks remastering the movie for Blu-ray and performing subtle tweaks. As to the actual release date, Lisberger didn't give any specifics as it is up to the studio, but he said that it would be "sooner rather than later."

Warner's Blu-ray Authoring Company Licenses BD-J Software

Global Digital Media Xchange Inc. (GDMX), a wholly owned subsidiary of Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc., has entered a licensing agreement with software company Jargon Technologies to develop Blu-ray Disc Java (BD-J) application software. With this new technology development, GDMX will be able to provide advanced interactive BD production that is more cost-effective and faster than its existing methods. The new technology—with code written by Jargon and testing handled by GDMX—will launch later this month.

Family Guy Blu-ray Trilogy Gets Light Side /Dark Side Cover

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has revealed the cover art for Laugh It Up, Fuzzball: The Family Guy Trilogy, which is set to come out on Blu-ray on December 21. The box set will have a dual cover, contrasting the dark and light sides of these Star Wars satires. This trilogy is comprised of Blue Harvest (unreleased on Blu-ray separately), Family Guy Presents: Something Something Something Dark Side (already available on Blu-ray) and Family Guy: It's A Trap! (also announced for Blu-ray release on December 21).

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced Dinner for Schmucks for Blu-ray release on January 4, 2011. Directed by Jay Roach (Meet the Parents) and starring Steve Carell and Paul Rudd, this comedy centers on a rising executive who finds a way to fast-track his career by participating in his boss's exclusive dinner party, at which the executive who brings the biggest buffoon wins.

Four After Dark Horrorfest Double Features Announced on Blu-ray

Lionsgate has announced that, on January 4, 2011, it will release four Blu-ray double features including movies presented at the "8 Films to Die For: After Dark Horrorfest"annual theatrical event: The Gravedancers / Wicked Little Things (Unrated Director's Cut) (from HorrorFest 2006); Borderland (Unrated Director's Cut / Crazy Eights (from HorrorFest II 2007); The Broken / The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations (from HorrorFest III); and The Graves / Zombies of Mass Destruction (from HorrorFest 4). SRP is $19.99 for each.

Dances with Wolves Extended Cut Blu-ray Coming Up

According to The Digital Bits, MGM Home Entertainment, in conjunction with 20th Century Fox, will release Dances with Wolves on Blu-ray on January 11, 2011. This BD will present the extended cut of this Oscar-winning western starring and directed by Kevin Costner. Most of the previous DVD extras will reportedly be included, along with newly-produced material.

The Town Blu-ray Announced

Warner Home Video has announced The Town for Blu-ray release on December 17, on a BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack, exclusively featuring an all-new unrated extended cut with 23 additional minutes. This crime thriller, based on Chuck Hogan's novel Prince of Thieves, stars Ben Affleck (who also directs), Rebecca Hall, Jon Hamm and Jeremy Renner.

Legend of the Guardians Announced on 2D and 3D Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced the Zach Snyder-directed family adventure movie Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole for Blu-ray release on December 17, in 2D and 3D Blu-ray editions. Both releases will include a DVD and Digital Copy of the movie, and the 3D BD will also include the 2D Blu-ray version. The BD will exclusively include another Maximum Movie Mode track, here renamed "Maximum Kid Mode," exploring the world of Ga'Hoole.

The A-Team Blu-ray Announced in the UK

The UK branch of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced The A-Team for Blu-ray release on November 29, on a "Triple Play" BD/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack. Both the theatrical version of the movie and an "explosive extended cut" will be included. This movie adaptation of the 1980s TV series stars Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, Sharlto Copley and Jessica Biel.

Blu-ray Sales, October 25-31: Sex Sells More (Update)

Sex and the City 2 was the top-selling title on Blu-ray during the week ended October 31, according to Nielsen VideoScan. The sequel to the movie adaptation of the Sex and the City TV series narrowly outsold runner-up Back to the Future: 25th Anniversary Trilogy. In the battle of the catalog Blu-ray collections, Back to the Future was the clear winner, selling three times as many units as Alien Anthology (although it must be noted that pricing was also different). Update: sales figures added.

Panasonic Avatar 3D Blu-ray European Promotion Detailed

The national branches of Panasonic have officially announced the promotion offering a free copy of the 3D Blu-ray of James Cameron's Avatar. Depending on the individual country, the specific hardware you need to purchase to qualify for the free disc varies. Unlike in the US, previous buyers of Panasonic 3D equipment will not benefit from a free Avatar 3D BD.

Machete Blu-ray Announced

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced Robert Rodriguez's Machete for Blu-ray release on January 4, 2011, on a BD/Digital Copy combo pack (with the digital copy available on disc as well as through Pocket BLU, in a first for the studio). This revenge movie, starring Danny Trejo, is an expansion of one of the fake trailers in Grindhouse.

Amazon: Consumers Love Blu-ray, but Need Better Prices and Selection

During yesterday's Blu-Con 2010 conference in Los Angeles, Bill Carr, Amazon's Vice-president of music and video, said outright that "consumers love Blu-ray." However, he also noted that the format needs a wider title selection, and would benefit from easier Internet connectivity. Carr also mentioned pricing and bundling as factors for Blu-ray adoption.

Music World/Columbia Records have announced the upcoming release of Beyoncé: I Am... World Tour, a full-length concert film Blu-ray lensed during the artist's record-breaking international concert tour. Street date has been set on December 7. The film features performances of more than twenty #1 hits transformed for the stage as well as guest appearances by Kanye West and Jay-Z.

Piranha 3D Announced on 2D and 3D Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that, on January 11, 2011, it will release Piranha on Blu-ray, in two editions: a 2D Blu-ray and a 3D Blu-ray which also includes the 2D version but reportedly misses out on some special features. This Weinstein Company production, directed by Alexandre Aja, features "buckets of blood, gratuitous nudity and can't-miss cameos by Hollywood legends Richard Dreyfuss and Christopher Lloyd, plus horror maestro Eli Roth."

Panasonic Corporation, Royal Philips Electronics, Sony Corporation, and TDK Corporation will be honored with the 62nd annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Award during the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) for their contributions to the Blue Laser Optical Systems for Consumer Playback which was announced by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) on October 25. The development of the blue laser optical systems was fundamental for the distribution and recording of full HD content on optical discs at consumer-price levels.

Resident Evil: Afterlife Announced on Regular and 3D Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that, on December 28, it will release Resident Evil: Afterlife on Blu-ray, in two editions: a 2D Blu-ray and a 3D Blu-ray (which also includes the 2D version). Note that, unlike most other live-action 3D movies, the latest installment in the Resident Evil franchise was shot natively in 3D, using the same Cameron/Pace cameras used for Avatar.

Consumer Reports Tests 3D TVs, Favors Plasmas

For its annual December electronics issue, Consumer Reports evaluated 14 3D TV models, in its first-ever ranking of 3D performance. Using exclusive 3D test patterns developed in-house, as well as 3D Blu-ray movies and recorded 3D sports broadcasts, the magazine's engineers found that plasma TVs are better at displaying 3D images than LCD sets, primarily because they exhibit less ghosting (technically termed "crosstalk"), or double images that appear even when wearing 3D glasses.

Brits to Go into High-def Hibernation

As winter approaches, Britons increasingly shun going out in favor of nights at home with their top-end technology, according to new research by the British Video Association (BVA). 73% of the British public now spends between one and six hours a day staying in to enjoy home entertainment - leaving almost no time for a quick trip down the local pub. The top reason among those who have invested in home cinema in the last two years is to enjoy recent advances in sound and picture quality (27%), but one in ten (10%) say they did so because it's cheaper than going out.

Twelve Announced on Blu-ray

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has announced Twelve for Blu-ray release on December 28. This drama, directed by Joel Schumacher and starring Gossip Girl's Chace Crawford, premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festiva, and had a limited theatrical release in Augustl. It tells a lurid story of drug addiction, violence, and sex among the young Manhattan elite.
