The Social Network is expected to one of the big winners during the upcoming Academy Awards. A story about the rise of Facebook seemed like an odd choice for director David Fincher after his Academy Award-winning film
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, but he was once again has proven he is part of an elite class of directors who can surprise moviegoers with their talent over and over again.
For the
Blu-ray review of The Social Network, staff reviewer Martin Liebman commented, "Fincher's masterwork is as relevant as it is beautiful, the picture a symbol not only of a people and an era but a beacon of filmmaking done right." He continues, "A stunning transfer sourced from a near faultless digital master, a mesmerizing lossless soundtrack, and an exceptional supplemental roster easily make this a defining Blu-ray release."
During his heyday, actor Kevin Costner starred in hit after hit, with seemingly no end in sight. Arguably his finest film,
Dances with Wolves is being released today on Blu-ray to celebrate its 20th anniversary of the theatrical release. While many fans will see the similarity between this film and another "gone native" story involving blue aliens,
Wolves touches on the still tender issue of America's conquest of the West rather than the more broad environmental impact of humans.
Staff reviewer Casey Broadwater commented in his
Blu-ray review of Dances with Wolves, "While I'd argue that the film probably didn't deserve to practically sweep the Academy Awards in 1990, Dances with Wolves is undeniably one of the most lavish and loved films of its decade. I would've appreciated a disc that featured both the theatrical and director's cuts of the film, but MGM has nevertheless put together a fine Blu-ray package for this release, with a gorgeous high definition transfer, 7.1 lossless audio, and a variety of decent extras."
If you are looking for a psychological monster thrill ride, you should probably stay away from
Piranha 3D on Blu-ray. But if you go into the film with zero expectations of magnificence – and that should have been extremely obvious based on the trailer – it's an entertaining escape film and a faithful remake to the original and James Cameron directed sequel. The release is also available as a standard Blu-ray, but let's be honest, you're going to want the 3D experience on this one.
For the
Blu-ray review of Piranha 3D, staff reviewer Martin Liebman concludes, "Piranha is a deviously fun little remake that's thematically vacuous and emotionally vacant, but it's hard to fault a movie with no class when it has so much fun being classless." He continues, "Sony's Blu-ray 3D release of Piranha offers viewers a quality 3D experience, but at the expense of several extras. Fortunately, the documentary remains, but buyers will have to choose whether a few throwaway extras and the deleted scenes are worth the upgrade to 3D."
And finally, Warner brings us
Once Upon a Time in America on Blu-ray today. Any fan of gangster films who has yet to experience the film will want to dive into this 229 minute epic as soon as possible. Those who have seen the film have likely already put in their order.
