For the week that ended on March 10th, Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Wreck-It Ralph scored the top position on the Blu-ray and overall package media lists. This CGI-animated comedy was a critical favorite last November -
its current Metacritic standing is at a 72% favorability rating - despite a slightly underwhelming domestic gross of $187 million (on top of its $165 million budget). Nevertheless, it debuted at number one on the home media market, where it had a Blu-ray market share of 51%
At the number two spot on the overall package media and Blu-ray-only rankings was Summit and Lionsgate Home Entertainment's release of
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2. Last November, the film had an impressive theatrical gross of over $829 million worldwide (on top of its estimated budget of $120 million); so far, its home media success has made for lucrative small-screen fortunes. On the Blu-ray chart,
Breaking Dawn: Part 2 sold 45% as many discs as
Wreck-It Ralph and garnered an HD market share of 25%. It performed even better when taking into consideration the overall home media chart - there,
Breaking Dawn: Part 2 sold 91% as many total units as the Disney adventure.
Finally, MGM and Fox Home Entertainment's
Red Dawn took the third place rankings on both the Blu-ray-only and total package media lists. After years of distribution and exhibition delays, this remake of
director John Milius' 1984 cult classic managed a disappointing theatrical gross of $44 million on top of its $65 million budget. Still, it rounding out the top three was a solid small-screen start;
Red Dawn sold 22% as many Blu-rays as
Wreck-It Ralph and 25% as many total units. It also had a 44% HD market share.
