This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Scream Factory and Shout Factory have announced their November batch of releases. They are: The Chow Yun-Fat Collection Volume One, The Family Man (2000), Women in Prison Collection (1971-1985), and The Transformers: The Movie (1986).

Ice Cream Man 4K Blu-ray

Alliance Entertainment is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Eli Roth's Ice Cream Man (2026), starring Ari Millen, Charlie Zeltzer, Shiloh O'Reilly, Sarah Abbott, and Benjamin Byron Davis. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

The Rock 30th Anniversary 4K Blu-ray

Twentieth Century Studios plans to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Michael Bay's The Rock (1996) with a new combo pack release, which is expected to arrive on the market before the end of the year.

Dead Poets Society 4K Blu-ray

20th Century Studios is preparing a combo pack release of Peter Weir's Dead Poets Society (1989), starring Robin Williams, Robert Sean Leonard, Ethan Hawke, Josh Charles, and Gale Hansen. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on September 29.

For the week of May 7th, Paramount Home Media Entertainment is bringing Jack Reacher to Blu-ray. The film is actually an adaptation of Lee Child's novel One Shot, and fans took great exception with director Chris McQuarrie's decision to cast Tom Cruise as the 6'5", 250-lbs Reacher that Child describes in One Shot.

Disney Announces 'Oz the Great and Powerful 3D' Workaround

Earlier today, in response to consumer outcry, Disney revealed that Blu-ray copies of Oz the Great and Powerful 3D -- which feature a 3D BD disc and downloadable digital copy, but no 2D BD -- will include an in-package offer that allows those who purchase the 3D version to obtain a 2D BD disc by mail for an additional $5.99. The film arrives on Blu-ray on June 11th.

X-Ray / Schizoid Blu-ray

Scream Factory, the horror-thriller offshoot of independent film distributor Shout Factory, has revealed the cover art for David Paulsen's Schizoid (1980) and Boaz Davidson's X-Ray a.k.a Hospital Massacre (1982). The two films will be available in a combo pack edition which is expected to arrive on the market in August.

Ender's Game Teaser Trailer Announcement

Summit Entertainment has released a teaser trailer announcement for director Gavin Hood's (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) highly anticipated science fiction film Ender's Game (2013), starring Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, Abigail Breslin, and Hailee Steinfeld. The film is set to open in theaters across the United States on November 1.

Another Men in Black Film Coming Up

Sony will produce another Men in Black film, though it is unknown at the moment whether Will Smith will be back as Agent J. Early reports indicate that writer Oren Uziel will pen the script for the upcoming film. Uziel will also be working on a script for a sequel to 21 Jump Street.

Independent distributors Olive Films have added four more titles to their June slate: Jean Luc-Godard's Comment ça va? a.k.a How Is It Going? (1978) and Soigne ta droite a.k.a Keep Your Right Up (1978), Samuel Fuller's Shark! (1969), and Lewis R. Foster's Crashout (1955).

The British Film Institute has informed us that it is planning to bring to Blu-ray a number of classic and cult films, amongst them Alain Robbe-Grillet's Successive Slidings of Pleasure and Trans-Europ-Express, and Roberto Rossellini's Stromboli and Journey to Italy.

The UK branch of Sony Pictures has revealed that it is planning to bring to Blu-ray director Fred Zinnemann's classic film From Here to Eternity (1953), starring Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, and Deborah Kerr. The preliminary release date set by the studio is October 7th.

Blu-ray Sales, April 22-28: Django Unchained Stays at Number One

For the week that ended on April 28th, Anchor Bay and the Weinstein Company's Django Unchained remained at number one on the Blu-ray and overall package media lists. This violent, darkly comic Western brought director Quentin Tarantino widespread acclaim after it premiered theatrically, earning over $420 million worldwide and receiving five Oscar nominations.

Doctor Who Update: Series Seven, Part Two Blu-ray Does Not Include The Snowmen

In March, BBC Home Entertainment announced that the 2012 Doctor Who Christmas Special, "The Snowmen," would be included with the Blu-ray edition of Doctor Who: Series Seven, Part Two. However, today the studio revealed that the 2012 Christmas Special will only be available separately and will not be a part of the Series Seven, Part Two release.

DEG: Blu-ray Sales Jumps Nearly 30% Q1

According to a new report released by the The Digital Entertainment Group (DEG), Blu-ray sales increased 28.5% for Q1 2013 (over the same period last year). Sales of new release titles on Blu-ray were up 37% in Q1 from a year earlier. Similarly, sales of catalog titles on the HD format experienced robust growth with a 16% gain from the first quarter of 2012. Overall total spending on home video entertainment was up 5%.

First 8K Narrative Film to be Screened at Cannes

Japanese public broadcaster NHK will present the first 8K Super Hi-Vision narrative film at the 66th Cannes Film Festival later this month. Toshio Lee's Beauties À La Carte will be screened at the Hôtel Majestic Barrière on May 16 and 17.
