This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Scream Factory and Shout Factory have announced their November batch of releases. They are: The Chow Yun-Fat Collection Volume One, The Family Man (2000), Women in Prison Collection (1971-1985), and The Transformers: The Movie (1986).

Ice Cream Man 4K Blu-ray

Alliance Entertainment is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Eli Roth's Ice Cream Man (2026), starring Ari Millen, Charlie Zeltzer, Shiloh O'Reilly, Sarah Abbott, and Benjamin Byron Davis. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Blu-ray Sales: August 9-15: Project Hail Mary Fends Off Mars Attacks! in First Week

For the week that ended on August 15th, Alliance Entertainment's Project Hail Mary topped the Blu-ray-only, overall packaged media and 4K UHD charts in its debut. Second place on the Blu-ray-only chart went to Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's Mars Attacks!, which was released on 4K UHD this week, while third place went to Warner's own Mortal Kombat II in its third week.

The Rock 30th Anniversary 4K Blu-ray

Twentieth Century Studios plans to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Michael Bay's The Rock (1996) with a new combo pack release, which is expected to arrive on the market before the end of the year.

Dead Poets Society 4K Blu-ray

20th Century Studios is preparing a combo pack release of Peter Weir's Dead Poets Society (1989), starring Robin Williams, Robert Sean Leonard, Ethan Hawke, Josh Charles, and Gale Hansen. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on September 29.

Eureka Entertainment to Release F.W. Murnau's Nosferatu

British distributors Eureka Entertainment have announced that they will release on Blu-ray F.W. Murnau's classic horror film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror. Restored in Germany by the world-renowned Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung (FWMS), Nosferatu will also be screened in select theaters across the United Kingdom.

Mickey's Christmas Carol & A Very Merry Pooh Year Blu-rays

Game of Thrones: The Complete Third Season Blu-ray

HBO Home Entertainment has officially announced and dated the Blu-ray release of Game of Thrones: The Complete Third Season. HBO and Best Buy are also hosting a social media poll to determine which of three design options will be used for the Best Buy exclusive packaging. The series' critically hailed third season streets on February 18, 2014.

Thomas & Friends: King of the Railway Blu-ray

Lionsgate and HIT Entertainment have announced and detailed the Blu-ray release of Thomas & Friends: King of the Railway, an all-new CG animated movie in the Thomas the Tank Engine series. King of the Railway arrives via a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack on September 17th.

Upcoming Paramount Catalog Titles

Paramount Home Entertainment UK will add seven titles to its Blu-ray catalog in September. Amongst them are Billy Wilder's Sabrina (1954), Stanley Donen's Funny Face (1957), Taylor Hackford's An officer and a Gentleman (1982), and James L. Brooks' Terms of Endearment (1983).

Johnnie To's Drug War to Premiere in New York City

In March, Blu-ray.com announced that Texas-based distributors will bring veteran Hong Kong director Johnnie To's Drug War (2012) to the United States. Together with Variance Films, the distributors have now revealed the official release date for the film's theatrical premiere. Drug War will be screened at the IFC Center on July 26th, and then will head to Los Angeles where it will open in select theaters on August 2.

First Teaser Trailer for Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises

The first teaser trailer for renowned Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki's latest project, Kaze tachinu a.k.a The Wind Rises (2013), has arrived. Based on Miyazaki's own comic, the film chronicles the life of Japanese engineer Jiro Horikoshi, who designed the Zero fighter plane used in the attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II.

The Beyond SteelBook

British distributors Arrow Video have announced that they will release a Limited SteelBook Edition of Italian director Lucio Fulci's cult horror film The Beyond (1981), starring Catriona MacColl, David Warbeck, Cinzia and Monreale. The SteelBook will be available for purchase exclusively at Zavvi, and will street on October 21.

Cohen Media Group Acquires Cédric Klapisch's Chinese Puzzle

Cohen Media Group has acquired the U.S. distribution rights to French director Cédric Klapisch latest project, Casse-tête chinois a.k.a Chinese Puzzle. The film is set to be released theatrically in the first half of 2014.

Yasujiro Ozu Retrospective

Last week, French label Carlotta Films began its Yasujiro Ozu retrospective with a newly restored version of The Only Son (1936), the Japanese master's first sound film. On July 3rd, Carlotta Films will also introduce new restorations of Ozu's masterpiece Tokyo Story (1953) and his final film An Autumn Afternoon (1962).

Francis Ford Coppola's Twixt Gets U.S. Release Date (Updated)

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has revealed that it is planning to bring to Blu-ray legendary director Francis Ford Coppola's Twixt (2011), starring Val Kilmer, Bruce Dern, Elle Fanning, and Joanne Whalley. The preliminary release date set by the studio is July 30h.

Poirot: Series 7 and 8 Blu-ray: New Street Date

According to the website of Acorn Media's parent company, RLJ Entertainment, Acorn is set to resume its releases of Agatha Christie's Poirot starring David Suchet. The next two series, comprised of four feature-length adaptations of the famous author's mystery novels, are now scheduled to street on October 1 in a single two-disc Blu-ray set.

Independence Day 2 Gets Official Release Date

20th Century Fox announced earlier today that the highly anticipated sequel to German director Roland Emmerich's mega-blockbuster Independence Day will arrive in U.S. theaters on July 3, 2015. Director Emmerich will once again be behind the camera, but at the moment it is unclear whether any members of the original cast will be back.
