Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Funai Confirms Blu-ray Support

Low cost electronics manufacturer Funai (who make components for such low costs brands as Sylvania, Emerson, and Magnavox), has revealed in their latest financial report that they plan to launch a Blu-ray player. With 52% of the DVD player/recorder market in the US, it is very likely that a low cost Blu-ray player would be widely adopted, similar to the success Funai continues to have in the DVD market.

Shooter Official for Blu-ray

For the past few weeks, 'Shooter' has been on retailers' lists for a day and date release with the DVD. Today, Paramount Home Entertainment has confirmed the listing, and announced that this Mark Wahlberg film will come to Blu-ray on July 31st. No specs have been announced so far, but Paramount's current trend of using AVC doesn't appear to have an end in sight. SRP has been set at $34.95.

Blade Runner Comes to Blu-ray

Twenty-five years ago, a movie was released that changed the way sci-fi films would be viewed forever. That film was 'Blade Runner'. For years, fans have been waiting for the definitive version of the film from the acclaimed director Ridley Scott (who did not approve the current Director's Cut of the film). After years of legal tie-ups, a definitive cut of film is now complete and is set for release this October of Blu-ray.

AACS Fails Studios Again

High definition movie fan have had May 22nd circled on their calendars for many weeks. Next Tuesday marks the release of several blockbuster titles, including both 'Pirates of the Caribbean' films on Blu-ray. These titles are also being shipped with the new AACS encryption code which was delivered in response to the AACS debacle of a few weeks ago. With a little less than one week before their release, we are already seeing confirmation that these titles have been cracked and are being distributed freely across the Internet.

Pioneer Brings BDP-LX70 to Japan

Currently, the majority of Blu-ray players on the Japanese market are also recorders. In Japan, where high definition TV content has been available for much longer than in the US, many people record shows off their TVs and burn them to Blu-ray discs for storage and playback. Now, Pioneer is bringing the LX70 (the same player that they are shipping to Europe) to Japan, being one of the only choices for those consumers looking for only a player.

Sony DADC Ships 2.5M BD-50s

Sony Digital Audio Disc Corporation (DADC) has announced that they have shipped approximately 2.5 Million BD-50 discs since production began last fall. Due to increased demand for the large storage discs, they plan to ramp up production to meet an annual goal of 30 Million discs per year by this fall. Once regarded as "science fiction" by skeptics, the BD-50 has become a studio favorite for delivering unmatched video, audio, and extras to consumers.

John Woo's Hard Boiled on Blu-ray (via PS3)

For the past few years, acclaimed director John Woo has been working on 'Stranglehold', a game which follows the Inspector Tequila and the highly choreographed gun fights that he seems to always be caught up in. The game is a continuation of the story of the insanely popular John Woo movie 'Hard Boiled', and those who pick up the collectors edition version of the game will the get the movie newly remastered in high definition on Blu-ray.

The King Swings onto Blu-ray

Warner Brothers Home Entertainment has announced that they will be releasing two classic Elvis Presley films on September 18th. 'Jailhouse Rock' and 'Viva Las Vegas' will both come on BD-25s, sporting VC-1 video encodes and Dolby Digital soundtracks. These represent some of the oldest films ever to be delivered in high definition, so it will be interesting to see how Warner does with their remastering techniques. SRP has been set at $28.99 for both.

Doctor Strange on Blu-ray

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has revealed that they will be releasing the Marvel animated movie 'Doctor Strange' on August 14th. Clocking in at 83 minutes, this will be a full length animated feature on Blu-ray, similar to the 'Ultimate Avengers' collection recently released by Lionsgate. Specs and price have yet to be released by the studio.

Primeval Shift

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has revealed that they will be delaying the Blu-ray release of 'Primeval' by three weeks. Originally scheduled for May 22nd, the horror flick will now street on June 12th. No specs have changed with the release and Disney has not specified why they delayed the title.

300 Storms onto Blu-ray

Warner Brothers Home Entertainment has revealed that they will release the blockbuster action film '300' on July 31st. The film will come on a BD-50 featuring a 2.4:1 VC-1 1080p video encode and Dolby TrueHD audio. The Blu-ray version will feature 90 minutes of extras, including featurettes for battle scenes, special effects, and characters. Also included will be a full length commentary track with Director Zack Synder and crew. SRP has been set at $34.99.

The Fifth Element Remastered for July 17th

What was to be a huge kick-start for the Blu-ray format when it was launched last year unfortunately never materialized in whole. 'The Fifth Element' is often described as demo material for A/V enthusiasts who like to showcase its unique visual style and awesome soundtrack. Unfortunately, while Sony delivered on the audio side with a stunning PCM surround track, the video was lacking to say the least. Sony heard the cries of fans and has spent countless hours remastering the title which they will be releasing on July 17th, according to retailers.

Bandai Releases Specs for Anime

Bandai Visual Japan has released some specs for their highly anticipated anime releases which are slated to come to Japan later this year. All the titles will be released on BD-50 and encoded using AVC MPEG-4, despite Bandai's previous announcement of their strong partnership with Microsoft (and their VC-1 codec). Another surprise is that most titles include an English secondary track and English subtitles, so they are very import friendly to the US. Disney Announces Narnia for Blu-ray

At a premier for the Blu-ray releases of the first two 'Pirates of the Caribbean' films, Disney announced that they will be bringing the first installment of 'The Chronicles of Narnia' to Blu-ray either late summer or early autumn. A highly anticipated title from the studio, 'The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe' will surely receive the same two disc treatment that the Pirates films have, including special features only found on Blu-ray.

Panasonic Announces DMP-BD10A

Riding the wave of huge success generated by their first Blu-ray player, the DMP-BD10, Panasonic has announced the availability of an updated version: the DMP-BD10A. Technically, the player is exactly the same as the BD10, featuring an HDMI connection, 7.1 analog outs, and decoding for DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD. The big difference comes with the price tag; the SRP has been set at $600US.

Premonition Comes to Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will be releasing 'Premonition' for Blu-ray on July 17th. This Sandra Bullock thriller will be presented in 2.4:1 1080p and accompanied by PCM surround sound. No extras have been announced at this time, though they should mirror the DVD which is being released on the same date.

Nip/Tuck Season 4 to Blu-ray

Warner Home Entertainment has announced that the widely acclaimed fourth season of the TV show 'Nip/Tuck' will be released on Blu-ray. Available September 4th, this four disc set will feature all the episodes from season 4 in stunning 1.78:1 high definition and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround. Extras include three featurettes, unaired scenes, and a gag reel. SRP has been set at $79.98.

Wild Hogs Rides onto Blu-ray

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced that on August 14th they will be releasing 'Wild Hogs' on Blu-ray, day-and-date with the DVD release. Starring an all-star cast including Tim Allen and John Travolta, 'Wild Hogs' follows a gang of middle-aged bikers and they make a cross-country trip on their motorcycles. Disney will present the movie in 1080p video accompanied by a PCM 5.1 soundtrack. Extras include a commentary track with director Walt Becker and writer Brad Copeland, as well as deleted scenes, an alternate ending, and outtake reel. SRP has been set at $34.95.

Hitachi Announces 1TB Blu-ray Recorder

At the Harvey Norman retail conference in Melbourne, Australia, Hitachi revealed their plans to release a 1TB (1000GB) Blu-ray recorder on the market sometime in 2008. The device will most likely be a set-top box with a Blu-ray burner drive and one of Hitachi's Deskstar 1TB hard drives, making it perfect for recording HDTV programs and recording them on a disc transportability. No other specs have been released at this time, but the device is expected to retail around $2000AU.

Pioneer Announces Second Gen Blu-ray Player

Pioneer Electronics has announced that their second generation player, the Elite BDP-94HD, will arrive on store shelves this month at a suggested retail prices of $1000US. Coming off the success of the Elite BDP-HD1, this second generation player will feature all the specs of the of Pioneer's first Blu-ray player, with added support for internal decoding of Dolby TrueHD. The player will come bundled with two Blu-ray titles which will allow the purchaser to experience Dolby TrueHD right out of the box.

Update: Universal Denies Going Neutral

Heise Online, a German IT website, is reporting that during a press conference, representatives from Pioneer announced that Universal will break their exclusivity agreement with HD DVD. This would allow Universal, the only large studio exclusively supporting HD DVD, to freely distribute their movies on Blu-ray. It is important to note that this announcement has not yet been confirmed by Universal.

Sony Delays Blood and Chocolate

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed that they will be delaying the release of the werewolf horror movie 'Blood & Chocolate' by two weeks. Originally announced for release on May 29th, the title will now be released on June 12th with no changes to the previously announced specs. This is the second title delayed this week by Sony, the first being 'Wild Things' which was also delayed by two weeks.

LFP Brings Porn to Blu-ray

LFP Video Group has partnered with New Media Adult Entertainment to bring, what they hope will be, the first American porn title to Blu-ray. The undisclosed Jenna Haze title is expected to be released this summer, though no specs or date have been released at this time. This begins the race against Vivid Entertainment, who earlier in the year promised the title 'Debbie Does Dallas... Again' for March but failed to deliver, to see who can deliver the first American Blu-ray porn title.

Sun Sponsors BD-J Programming Contest

Sun Microsystems, the leading developer of the Java programming language, has teamed up with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, Panasonic, and Ensequence to sponsor a BD-J development contest. Running through July 7th, the contest challengers developers to come up with the most out-of-the-box BD-J content they can think of using the Ensequence on-Q Create software suite (which will be provided at no cost to contestants for the 60-day contest period). Prizes include a Pioneer plasma TV and Fox Blu-ray movies.

Sony Pushes Wild Things

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed that they will be delaying the release of the teen thriller 'Wild Things' by two weeks. Originally scheduled for release on July 3rd, it will now join Lionsgate's 'Waiting...' on the 17th. No other titles have been affected in the move, with 'Flatliners' and 'The Patriot' still on schedule. Check back soon for specs.

Pioneer Goes Down-under

Pioneer Electronics has announced that they will be entering into the Australian Blu-ray market with the BDP-LX70. While it looks very similar to the US BDP-HD1, this new model has a few new features that weren't included in the US version. Pioneer has added support for Dolby TrueHD right out of the box, as well as support for CD playback. Still included is the 1080p24 output via HDMI and Ethernet connection which allows users to stream content straight from their Windows-based computers.

Warner Looks Ahead to 2008

Warner Home Video has announced that they have extended their distribution contract with Oscar-winning film producer Saul Zaentz, and that they will begin releasing him films on HD in 2008. Specifically, February will see the release of both 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' and 'Amadeus', both recipients of the an Oscar for Best Picture. Obviously, being this preemptive with the announcement results in no specs and no solid release date, but it is still good to hear that two of the best movies of all time will be receiving HD treatment early next year.

We Are Marshall Makes HiDef Debut

Warner Home Video has announced that the football film 'We Are Marshall' will make its high definition debut on September 18th. This riveting story based on actual events tells the story of the tragedy that fell upon the Marshall University football team, and the subsequent rebuilding of the grief-stricken program. The movie will come on a BD-25, making use of the VC-1 video codec at 2.40: 1 1080p. Audio will be presented in Dolby Digital. SRP has been set at $34.99.

DTS Debuts Master Audio Suite v1.5

As one of the two lossless audio formats approved for use on Blu-ray movies, DTS-HD Master Audio has allowed studios (namely Fox) to pass on audio movie tracks identical to the masters they come from. DTS has now released version 1.5 of their authoring tool, which will allow users to encode secondary audio streams, as well as more easily encode their data when using an Apple platform.

Warner Delays Classic Cowboy Films

Warner Home Video has revealed that they will be postponing three classic films which were originally slated be released within the next few weeks. 'Battle of the Bulge' was originally scheduled to be released on May 8th, but will now reach store shelves a week later on May 15th. This disc now joins other Warner titles 'The Fountain' and 'Road Warrior' (another previous May 8th title delayed a week) for launch on the same day.
