Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Blue Planet/The Dream Is Alive Double Feature

The documentaries just keep on coming. Warner Home Video has announced that they will be releasing the IMAX documentaries 'Blue Planet' and 'The Dream Is Alive' for Blu-ray on July 31st. With both features clocking well under an hour, Warner decided to include both on a single disc. The features will come on a BD-25 with a VC-1 1080p 1.78:1 video encode and feature a Dolby TrueHD lossless audio track. SRP has been set at $28.99.

Pioneer BDC-2202: $299

Following up on our earlier report, Pioneer USA has officially announced the availability of the BDC-2202, a combo drive which will read Blu-ray discs (including movies) as well as read/write DVDs and CDs. The drive, which will be the first Blu-ray drive to not have burn capability, will retail for the ultra low cost of $299 when it hits store shelves in June, making it the cheapest Blu-ray drive on the market by a few hundred dollars.

AACS: A Lesson in Futility

The latest chapter in the fight against piracy is making its way into news headlines today, with the unofficial confirmation that a processing key for HD DVD titles (and possibly Blu-ray titles) was leaked onto the web. I say "unofficial" because while AACS has not confirmed its existence, or the amount of damage it will undoubtedly cause, they are not hesitating to issue cease and desist orders to every website and blog that posts the mysterious code. If their reaction is to be a judge of the impact, this is going to be a huge problem for movie studios.

Black Snake Moan and Face/Off This Summer

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that they will be bringing two more goodies to Blu-ray this summer. For June 26th, Black Snake Moan stars Samuel L. Jackson as a god-fearing bluesman who cares for an over-sexed young woman played by Christina Ricci. The second is the classic John Woo directed action film Face/Off, starring John Travolta and Nicolas Cage, which is scheduled to street August 28th. No specs have been officially announced for either title, but it is expected that both with feature 1080p MPEG-2 video encodes with Dolby Digital soundtracks.

Exclusive Spider-man 3 Sampler at Best Buy

Those of you heading to your local Best Buy today for the new releases will also want to make sure you pick up a copy of the exclusive 'Spider-man 3' Blu-ray Sampler provided free with every purchase of a Blu-ray disc. The free disc includes four trailers for 'Spider-man 3', all in high definition with PCM 5.1 audio. Also on the disc is a coming soon trailer for 'Spider-man 1 & 2', hopefully indicating that it won't be long before we see these two films on Blu-ray.

An Officer and a Gentleman to Blu-ray

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that they will be releasing the classic 80's romance, 'An Officer and a Gentleman' for Blu-ray on July 24th. This Oscar award-winning film stars Richard Gere as a Navy pilot trainee who falls in love with a local girl during his training, despite the warnings from his instructor, played by Louis Gossett, Jr. Most, if not all, of the special features will be taken directly off the Special Edition DVD (set to street tomorrow), which includes audio commentary, new featurettes, and a stills gallery. The disc will feature the standard MPEG-2 1080p video and Dolby Digital soundtrack. SRP has been set at $29.95.

Disney Brings Roving Mars to Blu-ray

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced that the IMAX film 'Roving Mars' will be released July 31st on Blu-ray, right on the heels of another huge high definition documentary success 'Planet Earth'. This documentary captures the exploration of Mars as seen through Spirit and Opportunity, the two NASA-built rovers designed especially for a visit to the Red Planet. Specs include a 1080p transfer, PCM audio, and the 1957 Disney film, 'Mars and Beyond'. Also included, will be a featurette, 'Mars: Past, Present, and Future'. SRP has been set at $34.99.

Ghost Comes to Blu-ray this July

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that they will be bringing one of their most famous love stories to Blu-ray on July 24th. The Academy Award-winning Ghost stars Patrick Swayze as a ghost looking to solve his own murder and reconnect with the love of his life (and death), played by Demi Moore. No official specs have been announced, but it is expected that Paramount continue with a 1080p MPEG-2 video encode, accompanied by a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack.

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that the Rob McKittrick film 'Waiting...' will be released on July 17. Boasting some impressive specs for an indie film that had a difficult time at the box office, the disc will feature a 1080p transfer with a rarely used PCM 7.1 soundtrack. According to our records, this will be the first title released in the US to feature a 7.1 soundtrack.

Sony UK: Four Movies for June 18th

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment UK has announced the addition of four movies to its June release slate. Teen thriller 'Cruel Intentions' starring Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe; the Jack Nicolson and Tom Cruise military classic 'A Few Good Men'; the Halle Berry horror film 'Gothika'; and the Oscar Award-winning 'Jerry Maguire'. No specs have been announced, but the standard 1080p video with PCM audio is expected. We hope to receive more information on these titles as we get closer to the release date.

The Museum of Low Resolution

Sony Europe has launched a new Blu-ray website they are calling "The Museum of Low Resolution", which features an interactive flash-based interface where you can learn all about the advantages of Blu-ray. The website is set in the (hopefully) not too distant future where Blu-ray has won the format war and is the standard for high definition movies. Rather than be purely information, the website makes fun of previous technology (explaining how Sony prevented a rival technology "Pink-ray" from taking over the world) and educates consumers at the same time.

Once you enter the main site, users are presented with three areas to visit: The Time Tunnel, Science Room, or Art of HD Room. Each area manages to deliver on another advantage of Blu-ray while poking fun at some fictional times in HD past. Its a fun little diversion, so check it out.

Wild Things, The Patriot, and Flatliners on July 3rd

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced three movies to be released July 3rd, just in time for the 4th of July celebrations in the United States. Teen thriller 'Wild Things' will be delivered in uncut flavor, while Mel Gibson's The Patriot will get the extended cut treatment. Kiefer Sutherland's Flatliners will be released the same day. All three will be presented in 1080p and PCM 5.1 audio, though no other specs have been released at this time.

Wild Things: The scheme is far from tame. But whose scheme is it? Assume nothing as you venture beyond Blue Bay's elite beach communities and into the murky waters of the Everglades for a mystery of deceit, sex and greed as unpredictable as a hungry gator. And please, keep your hands inside the boat at all times. Kevin Bacon, Matt Dillon, Neve Campbell, Denise Richards and Bill Murray star in a swamp-steamy thriller about two high school students, the guidance counselor they accuse of rape and the detective who knows there's more to the story.

Music and Lyrics Comes to Blu-ray

Warner Home Entertainment has announced that the Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant romantic comedy 'Music and Lyrics' will be released on June 12th for Blu-ray. Video will be presented in 1080p VC-1, while audio will get the standard Dolby Digital 5.1 track. Extras will include many featurettes, deleted scenes, a gag real, and a 2.0 isolated music track. SRP has been set at $34.98.

Daddy's Little Girls, Weeds Season 2 Announced

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced the release date and specs for Tyler Perry's 'Daddy's Little Girls'. Scheduled for release June 12th, the disc will be presented in 1.85:1 1080p video and PCM 6.1 audio. The Blu-ray will feature additional content not present on the DVD, including three featurettes, deleted/uncut scenes, and a gag real. Extras shared with the DVD release include two featurettes and an audio commentary with Tyler Perry.

Monty (Idris Elba) is a mechanic struggling to make ends meet while raising his three young daughters. When the court awards custody of his daughters to his ex-wife, Monty desperately tries to win them back with the help of Julia (Gabrielle Union), a beautiful, Ivy League-educated attorney. Monty and Julia couldn't be less alike, but a flame is ignited...touching off a firestorm of love and conflict.

Also announced by Lionsgate, Weeds: Season 2 will be released day and date with the DVD on July 24th. Hold the Meatballs

Sony has confirmed, after pulling the title from their own press website, that the 80's Bill Murray classic 'Meatballs' has been delayed indefinitely from the release slate. No reason was given for the delay, which was originally scheduled to be released June 5th, and no new date has been set. Confirmed specs for the disc were the standard 1080p transfer with PCM surround audio, and a new commentary with director Ivan Reitman and other members of the cast and crew. The DVD, which was to be released at the same time as the Blu-ray, is still on schedule for a June release. We'll keep you updated when a new release date is announced.

Blu-ray Surpasses One Million Sold

Reaching this impressive milestone after being on the market for less than a year, the Blu-ray Disc Association has today announced that since inception, Blu-ray has sold more than one million movies. The majority of these discs were sold during the first three months of this year, where Blu-ray held 70% of the High Definition market. Despite coming to market months after the competition, Blu-ray was able to reach this important milestone first, supported mainly by strong sales of the PlayStation 3. Additionally, an impressive launch of Blu-ray in Europe has aided in the increased demand of Blu-ray movies since the beginning of the year. Attached to the press release was a list of current and future releases. While not complete (there are plenty of upcoming releases which did not make the list), the list does reconfirm that Warner Home Video is planning to release 'The Matrix' on Blu-ray this year.

Road Warrior Pushed Back One Week

Warner Home Video has announced that the Mel Gibson classic, 'The Road Warrior' will be released on May 15th, one week after its originally scheduled release date. No other specs have changed.

Blood Diamond Coming June 5th

On June 5, 2007, Warner Home Video will release the Academy Award nominated 'Blood Diamond' on Blu-ray. No official specs have been announced, but it is expected that the video will be encoded at 1080p using VC-1, and that the usual Dolby Digital soundtrack will be included. The extras announced include commentary, featurettes, and production diaries. SRP is $28.99.

Sony Expanding Blu-ray Production in US

A tax abatement has been approved by the city of Terre Haute, Indiana so that Sony Digital Audio Disc Corporation (DADC) can expand and retool their existing production lines to incorporate Blu-ray. Next month, the city council is expected to ratify their decision, and the abatement will become official. Sony DADC has proposed to spend $75.8M during the renovations, which will expand their Blu-ray production capacity in the United States. As the forth largest employer of Terre Haute, employing over 1,200 residents, the city found it necessary to grant the abatement in order to ensure no jobs were lost as Sony DADC continues to update all their production lines to Blu-ray. No specific additional capability was given by Sony, but as one of only two DADC facilities in the US (the other facility is located in Pitman, NJ), the renovation should provide a significant boost to their production ability. The expansion is set to begin May 15th and conclude October 1st of this year.

Pioneer Unveils $299 Combo Drive

In a welcome move from the industry, Pioneer has unveiled their BDC-S02 combo drive - a low cost alternative for those looking to playback Blu-ray discs on their PC without the added cost of purchasing a burner. The combo drive will play Blu-ray movies, as well as read any stored information off of BD-ROM, BD-R, and BD-RE discs (both single and dual layer). Additionally, the drive with read and burn DVD and CD media, providing full support to be a direct replacement to a DVD burner without losing capability. Currently, the only Blu-ray PC drives on the market are burners, which provide support for Blu-ray playback, but retail in the $500+ range. The BDC-S02 is the first Blu-ray drive on the market to break that range. Pioneer said the drive was immediately available for purchase in China and will be available soon in other markets around the world.

Panasonic DMP-BD10 Firmware 2.0

Panasonic has released the firmware upgrade that BD10 owners have been waiting for since first receiving their players back in October. The upgrade will allow the players to now decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD High Resolution audio streams. Other enhancements included enhanced EZ Sync/VIErA Link functionality and improved player performance and stability. Notably missing from the list is DTS-HD Master Audio, which is the lossless audio codec developed by DTS (and used on all Fox releases). Currently, sources indicate that the Sigma chip inside the BD10 will not support decoding of DTS-HD MA because of the increasing amount of resources necessary to decode the audio stream. Owners should not expect this codec to be supported at any time in the future on this machine. Even without DTS-HD MA, the inclusion of DTS-HD HR is a nice addition to the player's capabilities. Many Lionsgate films take advantage of this lossy codec, which supports much higher bitrates than current DTS audio streams. Dolby TrueHD support will be a welcome addition to owners of the “Beside You In Time” release, and is expected to become the main lossless audio codec as Warner and Sony have already announced titles utilizing its capabilities. BD+ Titles Coming Soon

In response to the attacks on AACS (the encryption system used to protect against piracy of Blu-ray and HD DVD discs) the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) has accelerated the time table for implementing BD-Plus. Earlier this year, a flaw was found in PC-based Blu-ray and HD DVD player software, allowing users to obtain the title keys necessary to freely copy content of the disc onto a hard drive. Since then, HD titles have appeared on Torrent sites and other underground networks. BD-Plus (BD+) is an encryption system completely separate from AACS, which helps prevent Blu-ray discs from being copied to a user's computer far beyond what AACS was designed to do. BD+ allows the disc to install a small piece of encryption software on a player, meaning that each disc can have its own key instead of each disc of a particular movie having the same key. This allows a single disc to be rejected, effectively punishing the person stealing the content, instead of everyone who owns that movie. Sources indicate that player compatibility testing has ended, and that studios have had test discs for the last few months. Once BD+ is available - which Sony Pictures is planning to use by the end of the year - it will add from seven to 28 days to production time, per title. 20th Century Fox, who introduced BD+ and has slowed disc production since the attacks on AACS, is expected to be one of the firsts to implement this new technology. BD+ is only available to members of the BDA for use on Blu-ray discs.

Dual Format Player Coming from Samsung

Samsung Electronics announced today that they will be releasing a dual format HD player in time for the holidays. The player, currently called the BD-UP5000, will support both format with full BD-Java compatibility for Blu-ray and full HDi compatibility for HD DVD. While this is not the first dual format player on the market, it is the first official one. The LG dual format player was released soon after CES this year, but was not technically compliant with HD DVD spec, as it did not support HDi. Some of you will recall that this is not the first time Samsung has announced a dual format player. Last year, Samsung had talked about releasing a dual format player, only to scrap the idea a few months later. No price or specific launch date has been given to the BD-UP5000 at this time, but with their current BD-P1200 Blu-ray player costing $800US, the new dual format player is expected to cost significantly more. Samsung released the first Blu-ray player on the market with their BD-P1000, and more recently their second generation BD-P1200. The BD-UP5000 will be their third HD player on the market.

20GB PS3 Discontinued

Sony Computer Entertainment has decided to stop production of their 20GB PlayStation 3 (PS3), leaving the remaining 60GB version the sole console in their arsenal. The 20GB version has proved popular with Blu-ray owners with its low price point and high end performance. The move, however, comes as little surprise; Sony has only shipped the cheaper version - which lacked integrated WiFi and memory card readers in addition to the smaller hard drive - to Japan and North America, leaving a single option to most of the world. Sony claims that consumer demand in North America - where both models were available - was 9-to-1 in favor of the 60GB version, so they will now focus on delivering what consumers have overwhelmingly demanded. This means, at least for the moment, that in order to get your hands on the most popular Blu-ray player, you're going to have to come up with another $100US. This news comes on the heals of rumors that a new PS3 version - with a larger 80GB hard drive and better BlueTooth antenna - will be released at some point in the future. It is still unknown if this new model will replace the existing model, or if it will be introduced after a price drop for the current 60GB model. Stay tuned.
