Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Fox Announces Titles for Japan

Normally, we would not report on titles announced in Japan unless they were unique to that region, but with the current drought of Blu-ray titles from Fox, any announcement from them is huge. It appears that all BD+ issues have been worked out, and Fox will release 'The Sentinel' on July 6th followed by 'Night at the Museum' and 'Species' on August 3rd in Japan. Hopefully, new titles for the US will be announced soon as well.

Sony Confirms Price Drop

Sony Electronics has confirmed what we reported this weekend: the new MSRP for the Sony BDP-S300 is $499. At only half the price of Sony's initial player offering, the BDP-S1, this marks one of the fastest price reductions in company history. The player will have all the features of the BDP-S1, but in a smaller form factor.

Vacancy Announced for Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will be bringing the Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale thriller 'Vacancy' to Blu-ray on August 14th. No specs have been announced, but expect the typical 1080p video and PCM audio that Sony continues to deliver on all their releases. SRP has been set at $38.95.

Sony Lowers Player Prices?

TV Predictions has been contacted by a local retailer who has indicated that Sony will set the MSRP of their new Blu-ray player, the BDP-S300, at $499 which is $100 less than originally announced. This will place the player at the same price at its closest HD DVD competition, the Toshiba HD-A20, which effectively negates the cost advantage the format once had.

Panasonic's Lab Expands Blu-ray Support

Panasonic's Hollywood Lab is now expanding their Blu-ray support to include Picture-in-Picture (PIP) and web enabled features for BD-Java. They are asking filmmakers to come to their lab in order to test out these new features for future titles. Currently, they are testing an unannounced title, due out early 2008, which will feature web enabled extras like additional soundtracks or subtitles.

Lionsgate Says More on the Way

During a fourth quarter earnings conference call, Lionsgate talked to the success they have seen in their Blu-ray distribution area. They currently hold 11% of the Blu-ray market compared to only 6% of the DVD market. This can be accounted for due to strong title support, which is expected to grow to 50 titles (currently, they have 28 released or dated for release) by the end of the year.

DTS to Demonstrate Master Audio

DTS will be demonstrating their lossless audio solution, DTS-HD Master Audio (MA), for the first time at Computex in Taipei, Taiwan. They will make use of a high-end desktop PC and Blu-ray drive to show off their accomplishment. DTS-HD MA is a competing lossless audio track approved for use on Blu-ray. No playback devices has yet been put on the market which can handle this audio codec, so hopefully this demonstration will be followed by the announcement of such hardware.

Purple Rain and Out for Justice Announced

Warner Brothers Home Entertainment has announced that they will be releasing two catalog favorites for Blu-ray on July 24th, Prince's 'Purple Rain' and the Steven Seagal action flick 'Out for Justice'. Both will be presented in 1080p VC-1 video and feature a Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track. While 'Out for Justice' will only have an extra trailer, 'Purple Rain' will host a number of extras including featurettes and music videos.

Fake Out: Disney Denies Lost/Santa Plans

Disney has spoken, and apparently there is no current plan to release Lost: Season 3 or Badder Santa on Blu-ray as we earlier reported. Fear not, my friends, because this could be a typical Hollywood fake out where the studio denies its releasing a title, only to announce its existence a few weeks later at some special press event. Only time will tell. Keep watching this space for any updates.

Panasonic DMP-BD10 Firmware v2.1

Panasonic has released a firmware upgrade for their DMP-BD10 and DMP-BD10a Blu-ray disc player. This update is to fix "playability and stability" issues, though owners are having a difficult time trying to figure out what those issues might have been. Regardless, if you are fortunate enough to own this rock-solid player, an update is now available on their website.

Lost Season 3 Announced for Blu-ray

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has revealed that they will release 'Lost: The Complete Third Season – The Unexplored Experience' for Blu-ray on December 11th. As one of the most anticipated TV releases on Blu-ray since being hinted at so many months ago, this is a welcome announcement from Disney. No official specs have been released at this time.

Van Wilder: Unrated

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that they will be releasing the unrated version of 'National Lampoon's Van Wilder' for Blu-ray on August 21st. Video will come as 1080p AVC and accompanied by the rare PCM 7.1 track. Extras include commentary, featurettes, deleted scenes, bloopers, and an interactive quiz.

The Lookout Comes to Blu-ray

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring Scott Frank's 'The Lookout' to Blu-ray on August 14th. No specs have been officially released as of yet, but we fully expect the typical 1080p transfer and PCM 5.1 audio that Disney releases have received. SRP has been set at $34.99.

Scary Movie Announced for Blu-ray

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced that the parody movie 'Scary Movie' will be released for Blu-ray on October 23rd. No specs have been released as of yet, but we expect a 1080p video transfer accompanied by a PCM audio track. 'Scary Movie 4' is already on Blu-ray in Japan and the UK (region free), so this marks the second release in the series on Blu-ray.

Are We Done Yet for Blu-ray

Following up on news from yesterday, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that the Ice Cube family comedy 'Are We Done Yet?' will be released for Blu-ray on August 7th. Video will come in the flavor of 1.85:1 1080p and PCM 5.1 audio. No additional specs have been announced at this time, but we expect most if not all of the DVD features to be ported over as well.

Final Fantasy and Arlington Road for August

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring two catalog titles onto Blu-ray for August 7th. 'Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within' will be presented in 1.85:1 1080p video and PCM 5.1 audio, and will feature most of the extras from the DVD. 'Arlington Road' will be presented in 2.4:1 1080p video and PCM audio, with the only extra being a making of featurette. Both titles carry a SRP of $28.95.

Bad Santa Now Badder and Bluer

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced that the unrated version of the holiday comedy 'Bad Santa' will make its high definition debut on November 20th, only on Blu-ray. Dubbed 'Badder Santa', this film stars Billy Bob Thornton as a, well, bad Santa. No specs have been officially announced, though you can expect the normal 1080p video and PCM audio as seen on other Disney releases.

Paramount Announces Blades of Glory; Zodiac Delay

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that they will be releasing the Will Ferrell comedy hit 'Blades of Glory' for Blu-ray on August 28th, day-and-date with its DVD release. No specs have been officially released, but a 1080p AVC video encode with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio is expected, similar to recent Paramount releases.

TMNT Goes Blu

Information is floating around that the recent 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' movie will make its way onto Blu-ray this August 7th. Warner Brothers Home Entertainment will be distributing the film, so we expect a 1080p VC-1 encode with Dolby Digital surround sound, though official specs have yet to be released.

Sony BDP-S1 Firmware v1.6

Sony has released the a new firmware version for their first generation BDP -S1 Blu-ray player. This firmware addresses issues with BD-Java features on certain discs. This is the first of two planned firmware releases which address compatibility issues with some movies. All owners are suggested to update their players to ensure smooth operation during movie playback.

Premiere CS3 Adds Mac Blu-ray Capability

A public beta for Adobe Premiere CS3 for OS-X gives some insight into the updated video editing software, including mention that it will support output for Blu-ray disc authoring. Once considered the best video editing software, until Apple's Final Cut was released, Premiere makes its return to Macs this summer. With the ever growing amount of OS-X applications with support for Blu-ray, it should only be a matter of time before Apple finally puts their support behind Blu-ray with products.

Nero Adds Linux Blu-ray Support

Nero has announced the availability of Nero Linux 3, the first Linux-based Blu-ray writing software. Based on the already successful Nero 7, Linux 3 provides user with the same features and usability for Linux that they are already familiar with on Windows. The application is natively 64-bit, supports 27 different languages, and is compatible with the most recognized Linux operation systems.

PS3 Firmware v1.80 Expected Tomorrow

Sony Computer Entertainment America has announced that they will be releasing firmware version 1.80 for the PS3 which adds many additional features to the console. Those who use it as a Blu-ray player will now be glad to here that the PS3 will upscale DVDs (as well as PS1 and PS2 games) to 1080p via an HDMI connection, similar to the capability of stand-alone Blu-ray players.

Sony/NEC Release First Joint Drive

Optiarc - the joint optical drive venture between Sony Electronics and NEC - has released their first drive since showing their intentions back at CeBIT. The BD-M100A is a Blu-ray reader and 2x writer and has additional support for reading and writing DVDs and CDs, similar to other drives on the market. The drive is now available across Europe.

Warner to Restore Classics in 4k

Warner Brothers has revealed that they will begin re-mastering some titles from their large catalog for high definition releases. The first titles selected for the 4k re-master (where the film will be scanned to a resolution of 4,000 lines) are 'Blade Runner', 'Bonnie and Clyde', 'Cool Hand Luke', and two films from the Dirty Harry series, 'Magnum Force' and 'Sudden Impact'.

Magnolia Brings The Host to Blu-ray

Magnolia Pictures has announced that they will bring the Asian horror film 'The Host' to Blu-ray this July 24th. No technical specs have been announced, but we do know that the disc will feature a slew of extras including a commentary with the filmmakers, four featurettes, deleted scenes, and a gag real. SRP has been set at $34.95.

Moser Baer Unveils 8x Blu-ray Technology

Moser Baer, in conjunction with the recently acquired OM&T (the former research and development subsidiary of Philips) announced the development of 8x Blu-ray technology for consumer use. This development will allow consumers to burn two hours of high definition content in 15 minutes, which most burners today would take four times as long to do.

Zodiac Announced for Blu-ray

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that the David Fincher thriller 'Zodiac' will be released for Blu-ray on July 24th, a day-and-date release with the DVD. While the movie failed to set records at the box office, it was highly praised and will most likely see similar video sales success compared to other David Fincher titles like 'Se7en' or 'Fight Club'. Specs have yet to be released; SRP is set at $39.95.

Nero 7 Offers AVCHD Support

Nero has announced the latest version of their popular software suite is the first to be certified for AVCHD (Advanced Video Code High Definition Standard) creation and playback. AVCHD was developed by Sony and Panasonic for high definition camcorders to deliver outstanding high definition video. Once an AVCHD disc is created using the software, it can be played back on either the user's PC, or an AVCHD capable player like the PS3 or Panasonic DMP-BD10.

PS3 Boosts European Blu-ray Sales

Prior to the release of the PS3 in Europe, HD DVD was comfortably outselling Blu-ray discs on a weekly basis. But now, less than two months since PS3's release, Blu-ray has gained a 64% share on the year, and consistently outsells HD DVD weekly. Specifically, last week's data shows Blu-ray having a weekly sales ratio 3-to-1 over HD DVD, a ratio Blu-ray in the US has only managed once (when Casino Royale was released).
