Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

MGM Denies Q4 Plans (Update)

MGM has announced plans to release the 'Sergio Leone Anthology' within the next year, according to MGM VP of Marketing Julia Simmons, as part of 10 to 12 titles planned for release. 'The Sergio Leone Anthology' includes the four classic westerns 'A Fistful of Dollars', 'For a Few Dollars More', 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly', and 'Duck, You Sucker'.

Starz (Anchor Bay) Joins Blu-ray Exclusively

In a surprise announcement (we have had a few of those so far this week) Starz Home Entertainment has announced that they will begin releasing titles exclusively for Blu-ray. Most people know Starz Home Entertainment by their former name, Anchor Bay, who own rights to over 600 movies and TV shows, including many horror classics like 'Evil Dead' and the 'Hellraiser' and 'Halloween' series.

Panasonic DMP-BD10(a) Firmware v2.2

Panasonic has released an update to their Blu-ray players, both the DMP-BD10 and DMP-BD10a. The notes that accompany the firmware state that this update improves playability and stability, as well as enhances DTS-HD playback. Once again, it appears that Panasonic is fixing problems before they even show up.

Samsung BD-P1000 Firmware v1.2

Samsung Electronics has released a firmware upgrade for their BD-P1000 player. While no specifics have been reported about the upgrade, end users are reporting that this upgrade will allow certain BD-J features to play (specifically Liar's Dice of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest) as well as makes the player faster.

Paramount Home Entertainment has revealed that they are delaying the Blu-ray releases for two of their classic romance films. Both 'Ghost' and 'An Officer and a Gentleman' have been postponed from their original July 24th release date with no new date announced or explanation given. Pricing and specs are expected to remain the same.

GoWell G875 Blu-ray Player

Specifications have been released for what might just be the first bargain Blu-ray player on the market. You may recall that in January the HD DVD group announced that cheap Chinese players would guarantee them a win in the format war. Six months later, those players still can't be found, but a cheap Chinese Blu-ray player has now been spotted on the website for GoWell Enterprises International Ltd.

After numerous delays, and over two months after its rival, the first Blu-ray movies hit store shelves on June 20th, 2006. Blockbuster Initiates Blu Only Policy

Blockbuster Inc will announce Monday that when they expand their high definition offerings next month, they will only rent Blu-ray titles. Up until now, Blockbuster has stocked 250 stores with both Blu-ray and HD DVD, and found that 70% of high definition rentals are Blu-ray. Because of this, when they expand the program to another 1,450 stores, those stores will only carry Blu-ray discs.

Potter, Oceans, and Flashdance this Winter

Video Business has posted a nice article on how studios will begin catering to the feminine side of the HD format war this winter as Blu-ray moves in the early mass phase. Paramount will release 'Flashdance' for Blu-ray on September 18th. Warner is planning to release the Harry Potter and Oceans films this fall on Blu-ray in sync with the video releases of 'Oceans 13' and 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix'.

Meet the Robinsons Comes to Blu-ray

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced that they will release the computer animated film Meet the Robinsons for Blu-ray, day and date with the DVD release on October 23rd. It will be presented in 1.78:1 1080p video with PCM 5.1 audio. The Blu-ray edition will include all the extras from the DVD, plus additional deleted scenes and a BD-J game "Bowler Hat Barrage".

The Fifth Element Exchange Program

When Blu-ray first launched, there were great expectations for the titles released. That was especially true for 'The Fifth Element', which had been a home theater enthusiast favorite on DVD. Unfortunately, the results were less than stellar, but Sony is here to atone! Those who purchased 'The Fifth Element' in its current form can exchange the disc for the new, cleaned up version of the film, due out July 17th.

Australia Clearly Blu

Sony Australia has announced that of the whopping 6,000 HD titles sold in Australia during the first quarter of the year, 90% of those titles were Blu-ray. The report also says that for the third straight quarter, total "HD category sales" are higher than non-HD models, though it is unclear what exactly is counted in these HD category sales.

Paramount Announces New Titles

In what can only be described as an absolutely massive announcement, Paramount Home Entertainment has announced four upcoming releases coming to Blu-ray this fall. 'Disturbia' will be released on August 7th, followed by 'Face/Off' on September 11th and 'Top Gun' on October 2nd. Also announced: 'The Jack Ryan Collection' - featuring 'The Sum of All Fears', 'Clear and Present Danger', 'The Hunt for Red October', and 'Patriot Games' - coming to Blu-ray September 25th.

Immortal Beloved Announced for Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that 'Immortal Beloved' will come to Blu-ray on August 21. Staring Gary Oldman as Ludwig van Beethoven, the film tells the untold story of this classical genius. Video will be presented in 2.4:1 1080p, accompanied by 5.1 PCM surround sound. The only extra on the disc is a behind the scenes featurette. SRP has been set at $28.95.

Deliverance 35th Anniversary Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that they will be bringing the 1970's Burt Reynold classic 'Deliverance' to Blu-ray on September 18th. Extras include commentary with Director John Boorman, numerous featurettes, and the theatrical trailer. No specs have been announced at this time, but MSRP has been set at $28.99.

Sunshine Comes to Blu-ray

20th Century Fox Japan has announced that they will be bringing the UK sci-fi film 'Sunshine' to Blu-ray on September 7th. The disc will be a BD-50 with 1080p video and DTS-HD MA audio. Extras include a making of featurette, a short film, deleted scenes, and trailers. Audio and subtitles will be in English, so this is very import friendly to Region A owners.

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has revealed that they will bring the Denzel Washington sports drama 'Remember the Titans' to Blu-ray on September 4th. Extras include making of featurettes, deleted scenes, and additional content to be announced at a further date. No specs have been released, but expect a 1080p transfer with PCM audio and most likely the 133-minute Director's Cut.

Sony BDP-S1 Gets TrueHD

Sony Electronics has released firmware v2.0 (seems like the magical TrueHD number) for their BDP-S1 Blu-ray player. The upgrade adds support for Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus (DD+), as well as additional BD-Java features. Additionally, the upgrade addresses some playback issues to make the player more stable.

New Blu-ray Players in the Near Future

News reports from all over the world have hinted at new Blu-ray players and drives coming from some well respected manufacturers in the coming months. Computer giant Asus has revealed their BC-1205PT Blu-ray computer drive. Priced at an entry level $270, this drive will read Blu-ray, DVD, and CD discs. Also hinted, was that we will soon see a Blu-ray player from JVC and possibly new players from LG and Philips.

Samsung Has Two Players for the Holidays

Insiders have revealed that Samsung is hard at work on two players set to debut right before the holiday season. The first, the BD-P1400, will be an upgrade to the current 1200 model, and most likely priced around $500. The second will the BD-UP5000, a combo player capable of playing both Blu-ray and HD DVD discs. This player is expected to retail for around $1000.

WinDVD Adds Dolby TrueHD Support

Corel has announced that their popular line of PC based Blu-ray playback software - InterVideo WinDVD 8 - has now been approved by Dolby Labs for the playback of Dolby Digital Plus (DD+) and Dolby TrueHD audio streams. This is excellent news for HTPC users who use their machines as the main playback device of Blu-ray movies.

Planet Earth Generates $3.2M in HD Sales

Warner Brothers Home Entertainment has revealed 'Planet Earth' has become the biggest high definition moneymaker ever. Since the title was released April 24th on both Blu-ray and HD DVD, it has generated $3.2M in sales from about 42,000 units sold. 'The Departed', the former sales leader, has generated $2.8M in sales from about 102,000 units sold.

Perfect Stranger to Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will be bringing the Bruce Willis and Halle Berry thriller 'Perfect Stranger' to Blu-ray on August 21st, day-and-date with its DVD release. No specifications for the release have been announced at this time, but expect the normal 1080p transfer and PCM audio from this Sony release.

Purple Rain, TMNT Get TrueHD

Warner Brothers Home Entertainment has updated the specs for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Purple Rain' to include a Dolby TrueHD lossless audio track. Scheduled to be released July 24th, this Prince classic film marks the second time Warner has put TrueHD on a Blu-ray title, the first being 'Letters From Iwo Jima' released last month. No other specs have been updated at this time.

Blu-ray MacBook Pro Announcement Next Week?

Today, Apple announced updates to their MacBook Pro line of laptops. The updates include an HDCP compliant (required for Blu-ray playback) nVidia GeForce 8600M GT graphics card and an optional 1080p display for the 17" model. Both of these additions to the product line strongly hint that a Blu-ray drive announcement is forthcoming, possibly as early as next week during Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).

Primera Technology today added to its Blu-ray Disc duplication offerings with its Bravo XRP-Blu Disc Publisher. Bravo XRP-Blu records and prints CD-R, DVD±R and BD-R formats with two drives and 100-disc capacity. The integrated Panasonic SW-5582 drives record CD-R, DVD±R in both single and dual-layer DVDs and Blu-ray Disc single and dual-layer with up to 50GB capacity per disc.

Pioneer BDP-94HD with Exclusive Superman Reissue

As we reported about a month ago, the new Pioneer BDP-94HD Blu-ray player will come with two packed in Blu-ray movies which feature Dolby TrueHD audio tracks (so that owners can demo this new feature of the Elite line). We have now learned that the two titles included will be 'Ghost Rider: Extended Cut' and an exclusive version of 'Superman Returns' with Dolby TrueHD and PCM tracks (the previous version only had a Dolby Digital track).

Sony BDP-S1 TrueHD Upgrade Coming

In the same press release that Sony announced the price reduction to the BDP-S300, they also announced that they would be releasing a firmware upgrade next week for the BDP-S1 in order to give the machine Dolby Digital Plus (DD+) and Dolby TrueHD support. Most significant is the TrueHD support which will allow the player to decode the popular lossless audio codec used in some recent and future releases from Sony and Warner Brothers.
