Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

MGM Announces Red Dawn

MGM Home Entertainment has announced that 'Red Dawn' will be coming exclusively to Blu-ray on November 20th. Video will be presented in 1080p and accompanied by a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. According to the release information, no extras will be included on this title, which has become a standard for MGM catalog releases.

Blu-ray Showing Impressive Gains

At the DisplaySearch conference held yesterday, attendees were treated to the latest information regarding the format war. Warner announced that '300' has sold over 250,000 copies on Blu-ray since it was released in July, twice as many as has sold on HD DVD. Sony also announced that the PS3 would soon be receiving a firmware upgrade to boost its Blu-ray interactivity functions.

Panasonic DMP-BD10 & DMP-BD10A Firmware 2.4 Now Available

Panasonic have made the latest firmware for their DMP-BD10 and DMP-BD10A Blu-ray Disc players available for download from their global website this morning. The stated changes are "Playability and Stability for Blu-ray discs and DVD disc", perhaps referring to improved BD-J compatibility with the many upcoming Q4 Blu-ray releases and maybe finally bringing to an end the playback problems many owners of these players have been reporting with certain versions of The Lord of the Rings Extended Editions DVDs.

Optiarc Announces Laptop Blu-ray Writer (Updated)

Optiarc (the joint optical drive company formed by Sony and NEC) has introduced a "low-price" Blu-ray writer for laptops, the BC-5500A. The drive also supports burning of CDs and dual layer DVDs. While no price was given, Optiarc mentioned that the drive would be aimed at the mid-level laptop market.

War Announced for Blu-ray

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that the Jet Li/Jason Statham action film 'War' is coming to Blu-ray on January 1st, day-and-date with the DVD release. Continuing with Lionsgate's strive for perfection, the feature will be presented in 1080p AVC and 7.1 PCM surround sound. No extras have been announced at this time.

Sony Announces New Blu-ray Writer

Sony Electronics has announced their second generation 4x Blu-ray writer, the BWU-200S. With Blu-ray writing speeds twice that of the original drive, and improved DVD write speeds as well, the drive is a nice successor to Sony's BWU-100a. The drive will come with Cyberlink BD Solutions software and retail for around $600 when it hits store shelves next month.

Free Record Shop Goes Blu-ray

Free Record Shop, the Netherlands's largest home entertainment retailer, has announced that they have officially endorsed Blu-ray as the successor to DVD. Since Blu-ray has launched in the Netherlands, it has outsold HD DVD on an average of 4-to-1, showing business owners that the buying public is demanding high definition content, and they want that content on Blu-ray.

Superbad Gets Super Extras

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the extras which will be included with the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Superbad', due on store shelves December 4th. Sony has confirmed that this will be a two disc release, which gives us the sneaking suspicion that all the extras will be in stunning 1080p high definition. Also, the Blu-ray will feature the "unrated" cut of the film which was too raunchy for theatrical release.

Son of Pale Face Planned for Blu-ray Release

High Def Digest has received word that the Bob Hope classic, 'Son of Pale Face' is currently being prepared for a high definition release. As BCI, the company distributing the title, is a dual format support, this release is expected to come to Blu-ray. The title is still in the production phase, so no specs or release date have been announced at this time.

Superbad Blu-ray Announced

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the summer comedy hit 'Superbad' to Blu-ray on December 4th, day-and-date with the DVD release. The latest issue of Home Media Magazine lists the title as a two-release, so it appears Sony has something very special planned for this release. No specs have been announced at this time.

Space Ace Coming to Blu-ray in 2008

Following the impressive Blu-ray release of 'Dragon's Lair', Digital Leisure has announced that they will be bringing 'Space Ace' to Blu-ray sometime next year. No specs or extras have been announced at this time, but the PC version, which is expected this fall, should mirror most if not all of the features to be found on the Blu-ray.

Lipinski Sound Goes Blu-ray

Lipiniski Sound Corporation has announced that they will exclusively support Blu-ray with their full range of home theater equipment. Lipiniski is set to reveal their proprietary turn-key HD Surround Sound solution using a Sony BDP-S2000ES Blu-ray disc player. This system will vastly surpass the audio quality currently available on the market.

Ultimate Force Extras Revealed

BCI Home Entertainment has announced the special features which will be on their upcoming 'Ultimate Force' Blu-ray release, due in stores November 13th. They will include a making-of featurette, any interview with UFC and film star Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, and theatrical trailer. Exclusive to the high definition release will be footage of Mirko training.

Pan's Labyrinth Blu-ray Announced

New Line Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the critically acclaimed film 'Pan's Labyrinth' to Blu-ray on December 26th. Video will be presented in 1.85:1 1080p, with Spanish 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio (with optional English subtitles). Extras include enhanced video commentary and everything from the 2-disc DVD release.

HiHD: Interview with Kazuo Hirai

Scott Hettrick of HiHD recently sat down with Kazuo Hirai, President of Sony Computer Entertainment, to discuss why a next generation gaming device like the PS3 requires a next generation storage medium like Blu-ray. Regarding why Blu-ray was used on the PS3, he commented, "You just can't expect that the 9 GBs of storage capacity found on today's DVDs are going to have enough space to hold tomorrow's games. Developers have already pushed the DVD to its limits in terms of space used."

Hitachi Develops BD-100

Hitachi has revealed that they have developed a four-layer Blu-ray disc capable of storing 100GB of data. While this has been successfully proven in the laboratories by other companies, Hitachi claims that current Blu-ray drives would only require a firmware upgrade to be compatible, rather than a specialized drive other companies are promoting.

Sony Confirms Godzilla Blu-ray Release

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has confirmed that they will bring the 1998 version of 'Godzilla' to Blu-ray on March 28th in a "Monster Edition". Video will be presented in 1080p accompanied by a PCM soundtrack. Extras will include a featurette, a music video by the Wallflowers, and other additional features yet to be announced.

Blu-ray Enters China Mix

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) will begin evaluating Chinese video and audio standards for inclusion in the format. The Chinese developed AVS (Advanced Video System) and DRA (Digital Rise Audio) have both been approved for use on a Chinese-only version of HD DVD. The BDA said they too will evaluate the codecs, but have not yet decided if the they will limit them to China only, or expand it to the rest of the world.

Celine Dion: A New Day Announced

Sony BMG is preparing to release 'Celine Dion: A New Day' for Blu-ray on December 11th, day-and-date with the DVD. After a 5-year stint performing in Las Vegas, Dion will have one final performance on December 15th. Don't have tickets? This release will easily fill the void, as it was filmed with multiple HD cameras. Specs and extras have yet to be announced, but expect PCM audio on this release.

SOS! Tokyo Metro Explorers: The Next Announced

Bandai Visual has announced that they will be bringing 'SOS! Tokyo Metro Explorers: The Next' to Blu-ray on December 11th, day-and-date with the DVD release. The 40min feature will come on a BD-25 at 1080p. The soundtrack will be presented in either 5.1 TrueHD or 2.0 PCM (with optional English subtitles). Extras include an audio commentary, behind-the-scenes featurette, interviews, trailer, and a 12-page booklet.

Sony Produces 10 Millionth BD-50

Sony DADC has announced that they have produced their 10 millionth BD-50 disc. The disc, a copy of the upcoming 'Spider-man 3' Blu-ray release, was produced at Sony's Terre Haute facility in Indiana, one of three such facilities which produce the high capacity discs (the other two being in Austria and Japan). Together, the three plants have produced more than 50 million Blu-ray discs at a capacity of 21 million discs per month.

Panasonic Announces New Blu-ray Recorders

Panasonic has announced that they are planning to bring three new Blu-ray recorders to Japan next month. The three models all support AVC encoding, a 4x Blu-ray recorder (with dual layer support), and a digital tuner. The DMR-BW700 will sport a 250GB hard drive, the BW800 gets a 500GB hard drive, and the BW900 receives a full TB. Pricing has been set at 180,000-300,000 yen.

Blu-ray Winning Europe 4-to-1

Sony has announced that sales of Blu-ray titles in Europe are exceeding sales of HD DVD titles by up to a factor of 4-to-1. This decisive lead has forced studios such as Universum Film (Germany) and Studio Canal (France) to plan Blu-ray releases for this important Q4. Additionally, sales of standalone players has nearly caught up with HD DVD, reflecting a similar trend in the US where sales of Blu-ray players has surpassed that of HD DVD players.

Legend of Zorro and Rent Announced

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced plans to bring 'The Legend of Zorro' and 'Rent' to Blu-ray on December 11th. No specs or special features have been announced at this for either release. 'Rent' has been out in Japan for quite some time, but it is unknown if this will be the same disc or something newly pressed.

Samsung Cancels BD-P2400

Samsung Electronics has announced they have pulled plans to release the upcoming BD-P2400 Blu-ray player. No official reason was given, but it is expected that when Samsung realized they weren't going to make the October 31st deadline (after which all Blu-ray players must be Profile v1.1), they cancelled the release. Their upcoming BD-UP5000 dual format player has also been delayed until December.

Hairspray Gets Master Audio

New Line Home Entertainment has revealed that the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Hairspray' will include a 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track. Being that this will be New Line's first high definition release, we can only hope that they will continue using DTS-HD MA for all their releases. Another nice touch is that the release will feature high definition extras.

Hastings Entertainment Increases Blu-ray Holdings

Hastings Entertainment, a video rental chain based in Amarillo, TX, has decided to expand Blu-ray support to each of their 150 stores, and increase the number of copies on store shelves. The change comes after a revenue sharing deal with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment that will allow them to increase the number of titles they have in store with little financial investment.

Dracula and the Director's Intent

With only a few days left until the much anticipated Blu-ray release of 'Bram Stoker's Dracula', the title is already causing confusion amongst the few lucky enough to get advanced copies. Early reviews have been mixed, and the web forums have erupted in consumer backlash, claiming Sony has destroyed the transfer. Thankfully, one of our Insiders was able to get the real story: this Blu-ray release reflects the wishes of director Francis Ford Coppola.
