Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

Scream Factory and Shout Factory have announced their November batch of releases. They are: The Chow Yun-Fat Collection Volume One, The Family Man (2000), Women in Prison Collection (1971-1985), and The Transformers: The Movie (1986).

Blu-ray Holds Off Transformers Blitz

Despite selling 115,000 copies, the Transformer HD DVD didn't sell enough to take the sales lead away from Blu-ray. Winning yet another week in software sales (51% of total unit sales), Blu-ray has yet to lose a week to the rival format this year. Consumers once again voiced that their preferred high definition format is Blu-ray, and despite not having access to this year's 3rd highest grossing film, they still support the format.

Panasonic Displays Car In-Dash Blu-ray Player

At the 2007 Toyko Motor Show, Panasonic revealed the first Blu-ray player to be used specifically inside an automobile. The player, which has support for all Blu-ray features include BD-Java playback, connects to an LCD screen via an HDMI cable. No price or release date has been announced for the player at this time.

That's Entertainment Delayed

Warner Home Video has announced that they have delayed the upcoming Blu-ray box set release of 'That's Entertainment' until December 18th. The three disc set, which was originally set to be released November 20th, will be encoded using 1080p VC-1 and include a lossless Dolby TrueHD audio track.

Fox Announces Region B 2007 Line-up

Fox Home Entertainment has announced its 2007 Blu-ray line-up for the UK, meaning many titles announced for the US will also be coming to Region B countries. While specs and features should remain the same across regions, it will make some fans happy to know that Fox plan on releasing 'Sunshine' in the UK on October 29th, possibly signaling a Region A release soon.

Blu-ray.com Folding@Home Team Breaks Into Top 250

The Blu-ray.com Folding@Home team has become one of the top 250 teams in the shared-computing project. When not using their PS3s to watch Blu-ray movies, many forum members run the Folding@Home program preloaded on the machine. While you don't need a PS3 to contribute (the software works on any Windows, OSX, or Linux system), the awesome computing power of the console has contributed greatly to the team effort. Currently, the team has completed 16,305 work units, amassing 4,559,066 points for the program.

Blu-ray Continues to Dominate in Sales

A new report by Home Media Research concludes that Blu-ray software has sold at a factor of 2-to-1 over its rival HD DVD for the first nine months of this year. Current estimates put Blu-ray software sales at 2.6M units compared to only 1.4M units for HD DVD. Since the format launched, Blu-ray has managed to move 3.01M units compared to 1.97M for HD DVD.

Resident Evil Trilogy Announced for Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring all three Resident Evil films to Blu-ray in a 3-pack trilogy on January 2nd. Also announced for release on that same date, is 'Resident Evil', the first film in the trilogy. Being that it will also be a part of the trilogy, we expect the third film, 'Resident Evil: Extinction' to be released on that day as well. The second film, 'Resident Evil: Apocalypse' was previously released on Blu-ray.

Michael Bay Feeling Blu Again

Director Michael Bay is feeling Blu once again with recent comments regarding Paramount's decision to release their blockbuster hit 'Transformers' only on rival format HD DVD. "It's short-sighted and it has delayed consumers' moving to HD (home video)," he commented. "As a director, my critical eye is that Blu-ray is where my money is. Consumers are smart, and they are going to wait it out."

Blu-ray.com Visits Disney's Magical Blu-ray Tour

For the past few months, the Disney Magical Blu-ray Tour has been traveling to different malls across the country in order to educate the buying public about Blu-ray. The display, which is sponsored jointly by Disney and Panasonic, showcases trailers for upcoming Disney Blu-ray releases, provides interactive stations for Disney BD-Java games, and features a presentation explaining the key facts about Blu-ray and how it differs from the DVDs which they currently have in their homes. Additionally, a helpful and friendly staff provided answers for any questions attendees might have.

Blu-ray Gets Its Sea Legs

Warner: No Profile v1.1 Yet

Commenting exclusively to High Def Digest, Warner indicated that their upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Terminator 3' will not use a secondary video decoder in order to display the In Movie Experience (IME) track. Instead, the disc will use seamless branching to a separate encode of the film with the PIP video "burnt in" to the image when necessary. This will give the same experience as the HD DVD IME track, with all differences being technical and unnoticeable by viewers.

Queen Rock Montreal Gets New Specs/Date

Eagle Rock Entertainment has revealed that they have delayed the upcoming high-def release of 'Queen Rock Montreal' two weeks to December 4th. Production issues was the reason given for the delay, but fans will be happy to know that this release is packed with additional content not announced previously.

WaxWorks to Offer Blu-ray Promo Kit

WaxWorks, a leading wholesale distributor of video media, will be offering each of their sell-through accounts a POP kit to educate consumers about the differences between DVD and Blu-ray. The kit will include two movie posters, three lanyards for employees, a demo DVD, and five brochures. The company will not be offering such a kit for HD DVD.

40GB PS3 Goes Worldwide

Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that they will release a 40GB PS3 to all regions this fall for $399US. This new console, which lacks backwards compatibility with PS2 games, is $100 cheaper than any previous PS3 model. What hasn't changed is the PS3's ability to play Blu-ray movies, a feature which has made it the most popular - and now one of the cheapest - Blu-ray players on the market.

Life of Brian Delayed; Everything Else on Schedule

We earlier reported, in error, that Sony had delayed five upcoming Blu-ray releases from their Blu-ray schedule. Representatives sent us word that the only title being delayed is 'Monty Python's Life of Brian' in order to add additional features. All other titles are on schedule and will be released on their previously announced dates. We apologize for the error.

The Rock, Con Air, and Crimson Tide Re-dated

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced that they have finally rescheduled a trio of action flicks which were postponed earlier this year. The Rock and Con Air will get a Blu-ray release on January 8th, followed the next month by Crimson Tide. No specs have been announced at this time, but expect the usual Disney treatment of AVC video and PCM audio.

Panasonic Announces 4X Blu-ray Writer

Panasonic has announced that they will soon release their LF-PB271JD Blu-ray writer to Japanese market. The drive will write BD-R at 4X via SATA interface and include back-up software. The drive will also burn CD and DVD media at a max of 40X and 16X respectively. No date has been set for the release, but the drive will street at 55,000 yen.

(Not So) Massive Sony Blu-ray Delays (Updated)

Sony has revealed that five upcoming Blu-ray releases for 2007 has been removed from the release calendar. Included in the delays are 'Monty Python's Life of Brian' (Nov 20th), 'I Know Who Killed Me' (Nov 27th), '20 Million Miles to Earth' (Dec 4th), 'The Legend of Zorro' and 'Rent' (Dec 11th). No reason was given for the delays.

Denon Brings Blu-ray Player/Transport to Japan

Denon has announced that they will bring their recently announced Blu-ray player and transport to Japan this January. The specs should be identical to the US versions, with the DVD-2500BT Blu-ray Transport priced at 231,000 yen and the DVD-3800BD Blu-ray Player priced at 336,000 yen. A firm release date is expected later this year.

BDA Revamps Website

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) has revamped their US website in order to provide more information about Blu-ray to curious consumers. Now available via the website is general information about Blu-ray, current and upcoming Blu-ray titles, Blu-ray hardware (with links to firmware updates), and a new Blu-ray newsletter.

Meijer Supports Blu-ray Online

Meijer has announced that they will no longer be selling HD DVD titles via their online store. This decision comes after an internal review showed Blu-ray titles outselling HD DVD titles 4-to-1. Meijer has also expanded their Blu-ray online offerings to 300 titles, nearly the entire Blu-ray catalog. While they don't rule out adding HD DVD titles back at some point, consumer spending currently doesn't warrant them stocking the items.

Terminator 3 Coming to Blu-ray (with PIP)

Warner Home Video has announced that they are bringing 'Terminator 3' to Blu-ray on December 4th. This title has been on HD DVD for quite some time, but hadn't received the Blu-ray treatment due to the IME (In Movie Experience) feature. With Blu-ray moving to Profile v1.1, Warner will finally bring this title to Blu-ray with the Picture-in-Picture IME feature intact.

New Specs and Date for Masters of Horror Vol. 4

Starz Home Entertainment has announced that the forth volume of their 'Masters of Horror' series will ship a week earlier than original scheduled, and will hit store shelves on December 4th for Blu-ray. Also of note, this release will include four shorts (vice the normal three), including the too-graphic-for-Showtime episode, "Imprint".

Sunrise Earth Coming to Blu-ray

The Discovery Channel has announced that they will bring their popular Hi-Def series 'Sunrise Earth' to Blu-ray on December 7th. The series, which shows sunrises from different parts of the world, is one of the more popular Discover Channel HD programs. The box set will feature 12 different sunrises, and a bonus program "Secrets of the Sun". No specs have been announced at this time.

Shoot 'Em Up Coming to Blu-ray

New Line Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Clive Owen and Paul Giamatti action film 'Shoot 'Em Up' to Blu-ray on January 1st. Extras will include a commentary track, deleted scenes, and the documentary "Ballet of Bullets: Making 'Shoot 'Em Up'". As this is a new release, it will remain Blu-ray exclusive until the theatrical run is over.

Samsung Issues BD+ Fix

Samsung will issue new firmware today to address BD+ issues with their BD-P1000 and BD-P1200 Blu-ray players. With Fox adding BD+ to their new releases, users with the above Samsung players were experiencing difficulty playing the titles. The LG player is currently experiencing similar problems, but a firmware update is expected for that player as well.

French Blu-ray Group

Five consumer electronics companies - Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, Samsung, and Philips - and five movie studios - Gaumont, Columbia Tristar, Walt Disney, Pathé, and Warner Home Video - have come together to promote the Blu-ray format in France. Together, they will act as a unified voice to convince consumers of the benefits of Blu-ray.

Full Profile Blu-ray Players Coming Soon

Later this month, LG will introduce their second-generation dual format player, which will also be the first Blu-ray stand-alone player to be compliant with the new Profile v1.1 spec. The new profile allows for Blu-ray movies to display a picture-in-picture experience via additional video and audio decoders. The LG player is also expected to be Profile v2.0 - or BD-Live - capable due to its Ethernet connection.

Paul Naschy Double Feature Coming to Blu-ray

Deimos Entertainment has revealed that they will bring a Paul Naschy double feature of 'Night of the Werewolf' and 'Vengeance of the Zombies' exclusively to Blu-ray on January 8th. No specs have been released at this time, but this will be the first Blu-ray release from Deimos (who specializes in offbeat horror, sci-fi, and cult films).

Sony Plans Sub-$200 Blu-ray PC Drive for 2008

Sony Electronics is currently planning to release a sub-$200 Blu-ray optical drive for early 2008. The drive will have reading capability only, and is a low cost option for those looking to make their PCs capable of Blu-ray movie playback. Similar to the other Sony drives, this one will make use of the SATA interface.
