Dracula (1958) 4K Blu-ray

Warner Archive, in association with Hammer Films, is preparing 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases of Terence Fisher's Dracula (1958), starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Melissa Stribling, and Carol Marsh. The releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 27.

One Night Only Collector's Edition 4K Blu-ray

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Will Gluck's romantic dramedy One Night Only (2026), starring Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Bobby Cannavale, Molly Ringwald, and LeVar Burton. The two releases are scheduled to arrive on the market on October 20.

Gwendoline Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray

Severin Films has dated and detailed its upcoming Limited Edition 4K Blu-ray release of Just Jaeckin's Gwendoline (1984), starring Tawny Kitaen, Brent Huff, Zabou Breitman, Bernadette Lafont, and Jean Rougerie. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 24.

This Week on Blu-ray: August 31-September 6

For the week of August 31st, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release 28 Days Later on 4K UHD. New releases include the anime series Black Butler: Emerald Witch Arc (2025) from Crunchyroll and Dry Leaf from Cinema Guild. Catalog titles on Blu-ray include Ten Women in Black and The Magnificent Cuckold from Radiance Films, while catalog titles on 4K UHD include The Hot Spot from Radiance and Tekkonkinkreet from Shout Factory and GKIDS.

He-Man Possible for Blu-ray

BCI has revealed that it is very likely (90%) that they will release 'He-Man and the Masters of the Universe' (2002) for Blu-ray along side their upcoming DVD releases. The shows were actually produced in widescreen, and testing has shown that these titles exhibit improved depth, more dynamic coloring, and greater background detail on Blu-ray. Three releases of 13 episodes each are planned. As these are still in the planning phase, no additional details are available.

Resident Evil: Extinction Blu-ray Gets PIP

In an interview with IGN regarding the DVD release for 'Resident Evil: Extinction' (which was released in theaters last week), co-star Oded Fehr revealed some information about the Picture-in-Picture commentary planned for the upcoming Blu-ray release. He commented, "Supposedly, on the Blu-ray - when you watch the commentary, you'll see Mila and I in a little square box in the corner."

Breaker Morant and Suburban Girl Announced

Image Entertainment has announced the Blu-ray releases for the Australian film 'Breaker Morant' and the Sarah Michelle Gellar/Alec Baldwin romantic-comedy 'Suburban Girl'. Both are planned for released on January 15th, and both will be day-and-date with the DVD release. No specs have been announced at this time.

Sharp Introduces New Blu-ray Recorders in Japan

Sharp has introduced three new lines of Blu-ray recorders for the Japanese market, all due on store shelves before the end of the year. The BD-HDW will be released in two versions - the HDW15 (with a 500GB hard drive) and HDW30 (with an industry leading 1TB hard drive). Both will feature digital and analog tuners, quick-start (less than 1s), gold plated HDMI ports, and support for Dolby TrueHD. The BD-HDW15 and BD-HDW30 are expected to ship December 1st.

The Simpsons Movie Announced for Blu-ray

Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will be bringing 'The Simpsons Movie' to Blu-ray on December 18th, day and date with the DVD release. The disc will be authored using BD-Java, and feature an AVC video encode and DTS-HD MA audio track. Extras include numerous commentaries, deleted scenes, and promotional video - all in high definition.

Rush Hour 3 Gets Specs

New Line Home Entertainment has revealed some specs for their upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Rush Hour 3'. Video will be presented in 2.35:1 1080p and accompanied by a 6.1 DTS audio track. Extras include commentary, deleted scenes, production featurette, gag reel, and trailer. Exclusive to the high definition release will be an enhanced visual commentary.

HTSA to Support Blu-ray Exclusively

Home Theater Specialists of America (HTSA) has announced that they are now officially supporting Blu-ray as their sole high definition movie format. After conducting an internal survey of their customer base, they discovered that 92% of high definition players sold were Blu-ray, with the remaining 8% being HD DVD or combo players. HTSA based their decision to back Blu-ray on those numbers which clearly show the preference of their customer base.

HiHD: Panasonic Hollywood Lab Videos

HiHD has added eight videos from Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory (PHL) revealing various stages of Blu-ray titles production. While the clips are fairly brief, they do give an insider's look into the production of some well known Blu-ray titles. Areas shown include Authoring, Video Encoding, Quality Assurance, and Disc Replication.

Advent Children Blu-ray Given New Content

Square-Enix has revealed some details about the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Advent Children' at TGS07. A few scenes have been extended for this release, which are expected to enhance the original storyline. Additionally, fight scenes have been re-rendered to add dirt to the characters' clothing - better representing the director's intention for the scenes. No suplemental material was announced at this time.

Adobe Continues Blu-ray Support

Adobe has announced that the latest version of their popular PC video editing software - Adobe Premiere Elements 4 - supports Blu-ray content. Adobe first announced Blu-ray support with the Apple OS-X version of this software, and has continued that support for this newest release. The software will optimize your video to Blu-ray standards in order to guaranty the highest video quality. Adobe Premiere Elements 4 is available now.

King of California and The Amateurs Coming to Blu-ray

First Look Studios has announced that they will bring 'King of California' and 'The Amateurs' to Blu-ray. 'King of California' - which is set to be released January 29th - stars Michael Douglas as a father who, after leaving a mental institution, tries to convince his daughter that there is Spanish gold burried in suburbia. 'The Amateurs' (also known as 'The Moguls') stars Jeff Bridges and is set to hit store shelves February 12th.

Rush Hour 3 Announced for Blu-ray

New Line Home Entertainment has announced that they will be bringing the Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan action/comedy hit 'Rush Hour 3' to Blu-ray on December 26th (a Wednesday release - Tuesday is Christmas). The film will be exclusive to Blu-ray until the HD DVD is released sometime next year. No specs have been announced at this time.

Sharp and Pioneer Unite for Blu-ray Products

Sharp and Pioneer have announced that they will invest in each other's corporations in order to form a joint capital venture. They will utilize the strengths of each other - Sharp for their blue laser diodes, and Pioneer for their drive assemblies - to produce consumer electronics, including Blu-ray products.

CyberLink PowerProducer Gets BD-RE 3.0 Certification

CyberLink has announced that their PowerProducer disc authoring software has received BD-RE 3.0 Certification from the Blu-ray Disc Testing Center. This will allow the program to author BDMV files on BD-RE discs. Last year, the software was certified for BD-RE 2.0 which allowed for BDAV files to be authored on BD-R discs.

Master & Commander and Amityville Horror in 2008

HiHD has revealed that two Fox titles recently delayed have been rescheduled for 2008. 'Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World', which was delayed because of compatibility issues, is now scheduled for February 5th. 'Amityville Horror' was delayed for marketing purposes will see release sometime in 2008.

Debbie Loves Dallas Released for Blu-ray

Vivid Entertainment has announced that the alt-adult feature 'Debbie Loves Dallas' (not to be confused with 'Debbie Does Dallas') is in stores today. More significant to the story is the fact that Vivid is releasing this title on Blu-ray and DVD with no release planned for HD DVD. This is a change in Vivid's policy which was originally format neutral.

Pioneer and Mitsubishi Announce Low-Cost BD-R

Pioneer and Mitsubishi, who have been working together on recordable media since 2004, jointly announced that they have successfully created a dual layer BD-R using organic dyes. Up until this point, BD-Rs used more expensive non-organic dyes. The new process, called Low-to-High (LTH) manufacturing is expected to significantly reduce the costs of BD-R production.

Fox Delays Master & Commander and Amityville Horror

Fox Home Entertainment has confirmed what retailers have been reporting for a while now - 'Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World' and 'Amityville Horror' have been delayed. 'Master & Commander' was reportedly delayed during quality control tests, and should have a new release date shortly. No word on why 'Amityville Horror' was delayed at this time.

I Know Who Killed Me Announced for Blu-ray

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced they are bringing the Lindsey Lohan box office bomb 'I Know Who Killed Me' to Blu-ray on November 27th. Video will be presented as 2.35:1 1080p and accompanied by a 5.1 PCM soundtrack. Extras will include an alternate opening and ending, blooper reel, and extended strip scene.

Loewe BluTech Eyes October Release

One of the most visually stunning players introduced at this years IFA, the Loewe BluTech Blu-ray player, is now set to be launch in October (for the UK). Final specs are still to be determined, but we do know it will support 1080p video output, and decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD. Pricing is expected to be around 700 GBP.

Bandai Announces Jin-Roh for Blu-ray

Bandai Visual USA has announced that they are bringing the anime 'Jin-Roh' to Blu-ray on November 27th. The release will come with a 20-page booklet featuring an interview with director Hiroyuki Okiura and the complete 522-page storyboard book (Japanese). No technical specs have been released at this time.

That's Entertainment Comes to Blu-ray

Warner Home Video has announced that they will be bringing 'That's Entertainment: The Complete Collection' to Blu-ray on November 13th. The set includes all three 'That's Entertainment' films in 1080p VC-1 accompanied by a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. Extras will clock in at over 5 hours, and feature numerous documentaries, featurettes, and outtakes.

Die Hard Set to Include All Four Movies

Fox Home Entertainment has adjusted the structure of their upcoming 'Die Hard Trilogy' box set. Originally set to include only the first three movies in the series (which were only available via the box set), the set will now include all four 'Die Hard' movies and is now called 'The Die Hard Collection'. Additionally, all four movies will be available individually. No specs have changed at this time.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they will be bringing 'Paprika' to Blu-ray on November 27th, day and date with the DVD release. The release will feature 1080p video and PCM audio. Extras include four featurettes and exclusive to the Blu-ray will be storyboard comparisons, animatics, and photo galleries.

Underdog Planned for Blu-ray Release

Buena Vista Home Entertainment is planning to release 'Underdog' for Blu-ray day-and-date with the planned DVD release on December 18th. Its still too early for specs to be announced, but you can expect the typical Disney treatment of 1080p video and PCM audio. Being a family film, Disney may also opt to include a BD-Java game for the younger audience.

Target Increases Shelf Space for Blu-ray

Video Business is reporting that Target has begun increasing shelf space for Blu-ray titles in their retail stores in anticipation of the upcoming holiday shopping season. This will result in two to four times as many Blu-ray titles on Target's shelves as compared to HD DVD. No official statement was made by the retailer, but it is expected that this is a result of Blu-ray's current sales advantage.

David Gilmour Blu-ray Delay

Sony BMG has revealed that the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'David Gilmore: Live at the Royal Albert Hall' has been delayed until October 30th. Originally scheduled for September 18th, the disc was delayed due to "production delays". Specs have yet to be released for this title, but we'll be sure to report them when they are announced.

Specs for The Company and Robocop

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed that the upcoming 'The Company' Blu-ray release (October 23rd) will be delivered on a two discs set featuring 1080p video and PCM audio. Additionally, Fox Home Entertainment has revealed that the upcoming 'Robocop' release (October 9th) will be the unrated version, and feature AVC 1080p video and DTS-HD Master Audio on a BD-25. The only extra on 'Robocop' will be a trailer.

Twister Dated; Led Zeppelin Delayed

As we previously reported, Warner Home Video announced the release of 'Twister' for Blu-ray. The title has now been given a street date of January 8th. No specs have been made available at this time. Also of note, the Led Zeppelin film 'The Song Remains the Same' has been delayed until December 11th from its original November release date. No specs have been changed with the delay.
